DABF Talk | Objects in narratives | Studio 6, Temple Bar Gallery + Studios
Nov 28, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Dublin
Join Sean Lynch and Adrian Duncan, long standing confidantes, as they spend an evening in Studio 6 discovering the in-betweens of the real and the fictional. Speculatively listing a top ten of possible new narrative styles, they hope to peer into the blurry lines between realism and fantasy. The conversation will centre around narratives at DABF24 interspersed with short screenings of Lynch’s work, delving into how certain objects appear in this form of narrative work and will be followed by a Q&A. Sean Lynch lives and works in Askeaton, County Limerick, where alongside Michele Horrigan, he runs Askeaton Contemporary Arts, an artist-led residency, commissioning and publication initiative. He represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale in 2015. Select solo exhibitions include City Hall, Melbourne (2023), Edinburgh Art Festival (2021); Henry Moore Institute, Leeds (2019); and Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (2017). In Dublin, he regularly exhibits at Kevin Kavanagh Gallery and in 2024 presented a two-person exhibition at The Complex with Laura Ní Fhlaibhín. Adrian Duncan is an Irish artist, writer and an editor with PVA Books. His latest novel The Geometer Lobachevsky was shortlisted for the Walter Scott Prize in 2023. His next novel, The Gorgeous Inertia of the Earth will be published in January 2025 with Tuskar Rock Press. His films have screened at IFFR, Karlovy Vary IFF, HotDocs, and IDFA, among others. His forthcoming film on Fascist-era architecture in Italy is called Latina, Latina. This was an Arts Council Reel-Art-funded project and is due in early 2025. Dublin Art Book Fair (DABF) is a centre for contemporary artist books offering unique artist publications and titles from creative, small and independent publishers, both Irish and international. Each year, DABF presents an extended programme of events and a curated selection of books nominated by the Guest Curator. Adrian Duncan’s Fictions: The makings of other worlds considers different ways stories can be told; the images, spaces, objects, figures, feelings that emerge while doing so; and the sorts of truths they propose. DABF24 is proudly sponsored by Henry J Lyons and supported by Dublin UNESCO City of Literature.

DABF24 Talk: Words as objects, words as hinges | Studio 6, Temple Bar Gallery + Studios
Nov 29, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Dublin
Join DABF Guest Curator Adrian Duncan in Studio 6 for readings and a conversation about the recent work of poet and fabulist Nidhi Zak/Aria Eipe. Taking a selection of poems from her critically acclaimed collection Auguries of a Minor God, Adrian and Nidhi will consider these poems as not just containing narrative and sense, but also shape and form. Identifying particular words from the poetry, the talk will look at how words can perform as objects or hinges within each poem’s flux of meanings. The talk will be followed by a short Q&A. Nidhi Zak/Aria Eipe's first poetry collection Auguries of a Minor God, was published with Faber & Faber in 2021. A Next Generation Artist with the Arts Council of Ireland, she serves on the Expert Advisory Committee to Culture Ireland. In 2023, she was appointed the Rooney Writer Fellow at Trinity College Dublin, and guest editor of Poetry Ireland Review. She is the 2024 Literature Ireland artist-in-residence at Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris and the Commissioned Writer in 2024 at Temple Bar Art Gallery + Studios, Dublin. Adrian Duncan is an Irish artist, writer and an editor with PVA Books. His latest novel The Geometer Lobachevsky was shortlisted for the Walter Scott Prize in 2023. Shoko’s Smile by Choi Eunyoung | Pearse Street Library
Nov 30–Dec 1, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Dublin
In these seven stories, Choi writes in a precise and unembellished style, to portrait the lives of young women in South Korea. The intimate is shown against sometimes a very complex political backdrop, but in a hopeful tone. In the title story, a friendship between an exchange student and her host sister follows them from adolescence to adulthood. In 'A Song from Afar', a young woman grapples with the death of her lover, travelling to Russia to search for information about the deceased. In 'Secret', the parents of a teacher killed in the Sewol ferry sinking hide the news of her death from her grandmother. Toji (토지) Book Club aims to explore Korean culture through novels and short stories to better understand the country's recent history, society dynamics and of course to enjoy the exceptional contemporary literature coming from South Korea. We have borrowed our name from Park Kyung-Ri’s novel, because we would like Toji to be a space to discover more about South Korea paying special attention to the female prospective.

DABF Workshop: From the Tabletop Press to Counterpublishing, .pdf Magazine | Temple Bar Gallery + Studios
Nov 30, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Dublin
Collaboratively produce a publication through the use of prompts, questionnaires, dialogue, and collage. To foreground the workshop, the editors of .pdf magazine will include discussion on what, if anything, ‘counterpublishing’ means and their experience making a digital magazine. They aim to emphasise the value of spontaneity, detritus, locality, and community in ‘print cultures’ during the process of collectively making the publication.
The workshop will begin with a set of prompts to collectively generate the content of a volume using whatever WiFi connected device you have, while discussing together what intentions or contexts can be brought to a publication. The second half of the workshop will focus on the editing and design stages, practicing iterative critical and aesthetic approaches, implementing collective input.
Participants will leave with a volume of .pdf magazine to which they have contributed from start to finish, and a renewed vigour for the DIY and experimental in publishing. While the editors of .pdf magazine will lead the workshop, they hope to also learn from what participants contribute, building on their own understanding of .pdf magazine and a potential DIY ethos.
This is an adult workshop, no experience necessary.
Access information: Approximate duration is 2 hours. Accessible to all skill levels (including basic English). The workshop will be held in a wheelchair accessible ground floor studio space. There is a semi-accessible bathroom. For further access information please contact Learning + Public Engagement Curator Órla Goodwin.
.pdfis a digital magazine that publishes new art and writing. Issue one can now be found at pdf-mag-pdf.com; issue two is forthcoming. Taking the digital as daily, .pdf magazine pushes to make writing free and pocketable, all while remaining bigger than life (and no less disposable/precious).
