Tour for People who are Hard of Hearing Thursday 21 November, 11am Join us for an in focus discussion of artworks in our new exhibition Brian Maguire La Grande Illusion. This tour will focus on the artworks in Brian Maguire La Grande Illusion in Gallery 3 War Changes Its Address and Gallery 4 The Clock Winds Down Free, advance booking via Eventbrite For these tours, we use devices as individual loop devices which connect with a microphone headset worn by the tour guide, that can transit to the loop devices. They can then be used by people with hearing aids to connect to or for those hard of hearing but who don't have hearing aids, they can use their own or ADI's earpieces. Free, booking is essential. For Hearing Aid users: Information on the T setting and Tours It is necessary to have access to your T setting on your hearing aid to connect to the tour guide equipment. Not all hearing aids actually have the T setting as part of their standard functions. However, the majority of hearing aids provided by the HSE do have the T setting available. The hearing aids need to be programmed by the audiologist to include the T-coil program/Loop program/ T setting. Then the hearing aid user needs to understand how to access that program option, which is usually through pressing a button on their hearing aid or selecting this program from a drop-down list on an app on their mobile phone. Many hearing aids now have Bluetooth programs/ Bluetooth compatibility access as standard, however, these tend to be designed to function with brand-specific products and are not compatible with the equipment being used during this tour. This event will be seated and we request that masks are worn. Tara and this group of wonderful women invite you to a Chat Cafe in celebration of the launch of Seeking Solace at Dublin Art Book Fair. Attendees will sit and gather around a set of vibrant large-scale table map drawings for lovely chats telling their stories and speaking about themes of healing, folklore, offerings, rituals, Kildare’s heritage, and what it means to come together. Expect a good laugh and some joy! Seeking Solace is a publication marking two years of collaboration between visual artist Tara Carroll and the older women's group supported by Older Voices Kildare. The artist and group engage in weekly ‘Chat Cafes’ in a local parish centre in Newbridge, nurturing friendships and telling stories. They identify sacred places and heritage sites and make pilgrimages to exchange oral histories and learn of each other’s personal rituals, lineage and devotion. Exploring the collective consciousness and the shared experience a pilgrimage creates, they look at the role a pilgrimage can play in contemporary society through the lens of Kildare’s rich heritage and folk histories. Over a series of workshops, the group creatively mapped these journeys through collective hand-drawn, large-scale maps of walking routes, sites, stories, and access information. These vibrant maps were transformed by artist and designer Áine O’Hara into the art publication Seeking Solace. The profits of the publication will support the group to continue their Chat Cafes. They will be lovingly donating part of the profits to Newbridge’s local charity Share Food Newbridge, United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This is to honour St. Brigid, Kildare’s Patron Saint, who dedicated her life to social justice and caring for vulnerable people. Tara Carroll is multidisciplinary artist whose social practice rests upon the perception of the body, impacted by socio-political narratives; and its placement in individualistic society. During difficult times of embodied conflictions, their community supports them in creating new pathways of care. Projects include Art as Pilgrimage, a durational socially engaged art project exploring histories of pilgrimage and its current role in society with older women; and (Dis)Comfort, a participatory workshop series exploring the embodiment of discomfort/comfort in marginalised bodies. The action takes place in a school in the 1990's where Mark is head over heels in love with his girlfriend, queen bee Shannon Van de Witt. When Shannon learns that pop-band impresario Simon Austin is the surprise judge at the State Talent Show, she dumps him for her chance at showbiz stardom. Mark rapidly goes from High School hero to High School zero. His garage band buddies rally around him and soon a plan for revenge is hatched to change their grunge band to a boy band and snatch the Talent Show title from Shannon’s Candy Girls . There’s just one small problem... the boys can’t dance. Mark enlists the help of the ultra-talented, new girl, Ella to help with their boy band make over and sparks soon fly. Can Mark get the girl, get the Grand Prize and get even with the scheming Shannon closing in? It’s anyone’s guess as the countdown to the Grand Finale begins. It’s sure to be one to remember. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parking available in St.Mary's staff carpark. Safe to Create is hosting another round of In-Person Active Bystander Training Workshops across the country this autumn, due to demand following our sessions earlier in the year. Bystander training is an effective way to empower people to address and prevent harassment and discrimination in a workspace. It equips workers with the right knowledge, tools and motivation to intervene safely and stop inappropriate behaviour before it rises to the level of unlawful harassment. These in-person workshops, designed for artists and arts workers in the arts and creative sectors in Ireland, are led by Professor Louise Crowley, Professor of Law at UCC and Director of the UCC Bystander Intervention Programme, and leading policy analyst and consultant Olwen Dawe, who has an established track record in developing and implementing equality, diversity and inclusion projects. Date & time: Tues 26 November 2024, 10am - 1pm Location: Clayton Hotel Cardiff Lane, Dublin Duration: 3 hours, including a short tea break Cost: Free of charge for anyone working in the arts and creative sectors in Ireland Participant feedback from past workshops: ‘It was excellent training. Clear and well delivered.’ ‘I felt positive about having a room full of people giving up their time to make the industry better. It felt hopeful.’ ‘It was thought provoking and engaging. The use of scenarios was particularly effective.’ ‘Clear strategies to deal with bullying/toxic behaviour, a frank and forthright presentation, and very useful real-world examples to interrogate how I feel I would have responded in the past versus what I could do in the future.’ ‘Great to do it in person. Very lively and informative’ Information Source: Safe to Create/ Irish Theatre Institute | eventbrite

One of the most common questions that artists encounter when they approach the book form is: what is an artist's book? Are there limits to observe, or conditions that 'break' the idea of what is acceptable as a book? What should artists consider in terms of production, price and distribution methods when creating a work? Or should these factors play a part at all in the rebellious world of experimental book-making? This talk will look at how practical aspects of designing making, selling, and displaying an artist book are woven into the overall concept of the work. The National Irish Visual Arts Library (NIVAL) is an initiative of NCAD in partnership with the Arts Council of Ireland. Since 1997, NIVAL has become the foremost centre for the documentation of contemporary art and design in Ireland and holds arguably the largest public-access artist book collection in Ireland. Assistant Manager, Ruth Hallinan, has spent fifteen years working in Irish publishing. She was named as one of the 150 most influential people in publishing by The Bookseller in 2021 and 2022. Dublin Art Book Fair (DABF)is a centre for contemporary artist books offering unique artist publications and titles from creative, small and independent publishers, both Irish and international. DABF24 is proudly sponsored by Henry J Lyons and supported by Dublin UNESCO City of Literature. Information Source: Temple Bar Gallery + Studios | eventbrite

Join Ingrid Lyonsand visual artistsLiliane Puthod and Ella Bertilsson as they discuss the place of storytelling and the embodiment of fiction in their practice. As they reminisce with good stories, they explore how people share anecdotes for all sorts of reasons; to make each other laugh, to process life experiences, to reminisce. They explore how storytelling helps us find common ground, connects us with with universal tropes and creates a collective consciousness. The three speakers find common ground in the distillation of personal experience and weaving of narrative threads through their use of materials, symbolic analogy and mise en scène, and how these sensibilities are used to build of fictional worlds. Through this distillation and fictionalisation in their creative practices, they take fragments of life, thoughts, dreams, and desires to communicate a vision and mediate with the world of otherness through storytelling. Maybe you’ll be moved to share your favourite ice-breaker. An art and visual culture specialist, Ingrid Lyons writes for several leading art journals in Ireland as well as galleries, art institutions and artists. Through her fiddle playing, she uncovers the rich heritage of Irish creativity, poetry and oral storytelling, while remaining close to the exceptional fiddle players who have personally mentored her. Liliane Puthod works with sculpture, installation, drawings and site-specific interventions to investigate the archaeology of everyday consumables buried within commodified gestures, trades and times. She has just completed a major solo work, Beep Beep as part of Longest Way Round, Shortest Way Home, commissioned by Temple Bar Gallery + Studios for Dublin Port and supported by The Arts Council Project Award. Ella Bertilsson’s practice combines elements of sculpture, video, performance, drawing, painting, and sound into staged installations, as a form of enquiry into bizarre and quotidian experiences and events that shape our character and define our identity. Selected solo exhibitions include: The Horse, Dublin (2025); Ballina Art Centre, Mayo (2024); The Dock, Leitrim (2023-24); and The Complex, Dublin (2022). This event is part of the extended programme of Dublin Art Book Fair (DABF). A centre for contemporary artist books, DABF offers unique artist publications and titles from creative, small and independent publishers, both Irish and international.
