Allyship is more than just a buzzword—it’s an action. This month, we’re diving into what it truly means to support and uplift women in the sports and events industry. While centering women’s experiences, this discussion can also focus on how men in the industry can act as allies to support equality and DEI initiatives. You'll leave with strategies for creating allyship in the workplace, supporting marginalized voices, and combating unconscious bias.

The A.I. Monologues w/ James Whittaker | Side Hustle Local
May 13, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Bothell
How is it possible to fear an AI induced dystopian future when we live in a human induced dystopian present? We have trashed our environment, poisoned our political discourse, normalized obscene wealth and extreme poverty, raised taxes to historic levels and created the least happy generation of children on record. Pointing the finger at AI’s imaginary dystopia is hypocrisy that should embarrass us all.
AI’s potential to heal humanity’s self-inflicted wounds is reason enough to face these fears even if they were merited. AI has come to us in the knick of time and we need to embrace it with every fiber of our carbon-based being. Indeed, the only dystopian future I see is one where western democracies lose the AI race to bad actors and oppressive autocracies. Winning the AI race is our only hope at reversing otherwise irreversible human catastrophe. It’s disingenuous to imagine AI being worse than humans.
In this talk, I present the case for AI being our best (and perhaps only) way out of the dysfunction of modern society. To accomplish this, I tell the origin story of extra-human intelligence with approachable science and zero bullshit. I then delve into the utopian vision of AI creating a world of leisure and abundance before shattering that vision as impractical (history is clear on this point: humans cannot be trusted to do the right thing). We end up in a familiar place where technology creates both evil and good in measures. The great challenge of mankind is tipping these scales in favor of good and the guardrails, laws and safeguards necessary to do this are discussed.
You’ll learn:
How knowledge escaped its human host and found itself in the clutches of machines
How machine “brains” work and why they outperform human gray matter
Why AI is so much more powerful than ordinary software
How AI can lessen human toil and unleash our creativity
How AI can optimize human well being, both mental and physical
How AI can create wealth that eliminates the need for all taxation
What life could be like as we cohabitate with AI
This will be held at the SIDE HUSTLE

location!

About
Overgrowth
. . .
This is just a story. It can't hurt you anymore.
Since she was three years old, Anastasia Miller has been telling anyone who would listen that she's an alien disguised as a human being, and that the armada that left her on Earth is coming for her. Since she was three years old, no one has believed her.
Now, with an alien signal from the stars being broadcast around the world, humanity is finally starting to realize that it's already been warned, and it may be too late. The invasion is coming, Stasia's biological family is on the way to bring her home, and very few family reunions are willing to cross the gulf of space for just one misplaced child.
What happens when you know what’s coming, and just refuse to listen?
Mira Grant
is the author of the
New York Times
best-selling Newsflesh trilogy, along with multiple other works of biomedical science fiction. She has been nominated for the Hugo Award, and her book,

So when an office romance ends poorly and gets her fired, she applies for a job in Amsterdam, idly dreaming of escaping the mess she’s created, but never imagining she'll actually get it. Except she does. By the end of her first week in Amsterdam, she’s never felt more adrift or alone. Then she crashes her bike into her high school ex-boyfriend—and suddenly life is blooming with new opportunities. Wouter van Leeuwen was a Dutch exchange student Dani’s family hosted, a forbidden love that ended in a painful breakup. Years later, there’s still sizzling chemistry between them, and okay, maybe a little animosity. More importantly, Wouter needs to be married to inherit a gorgeous family home on a canal—and when Dani's job falls apart, she needs a visa. As the marriage of convenience pushes them together in unexpected ways, Dani must decide whether her new life is yet another mistake—or if it's worth taking a risk on a second chance. ABOUT JO SEGURAUSA Today bestselling author Jo Segura lives in the Pacific Northwest with her doggo, who vies for her attention with his sweet puppy dog eyes whenever she’s trying to write. Her stories feature strong, passionate heroines and draw upon aspects of her life, such as her Mexican heritage and her fascination with archaeology. When she’s not writing you can find her practicing law, shaking up a mean cocktail, or sitting out on the patio doing Buzzfeed quizzes (though she doesn’t care what the chicken nugget quiz said–her favorite fruit is not banana). May 15, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Bothell
Third Place Books is delighted to welcome Diana Mato our Lake Forest Park store! She will be discussing her two latest novels, Rainbow Fair and Force of Chaos. Rainbow Fair is set against the backdrop of a middle school cultural fair, where twelve-year-old Sophie learns about her family's Hui (Chinese Muslim) identity. Force of Chaos is a young adult novel in the universe of the Power Rangers, following teenager Trini Kwan as she takes up the mantle of the Yellow Ranger. This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! About Rainbow Fair. . .Set against the backdrop of a middle school cultural fair, this tenderhearted and funny novel fromThe Unbeatable Lily Hongauthor stars twelve-year-old Sophie Hu—who discovers the power of defining oneself as she navigates friendship drama, family expectations, and learning about her Hui, Chinese Muslim, identity. Sophie’s work on the Chinese booth at last year’s Rainbow Fair is a point of pride for herself and her parents, even if Sophie and her best friend, Katie, think the whole thing is a little silly. Sophie’s family is Hui, Chinese Muslim. The Muslim part is something she doesn’t know much about. Her parents prefer to keep it private. So when it gets slipped to an overenthusiastic teacher that Sophie is Muslim, the only Muslim in her class, suddenly Sophie is in charge of debuting a booth representing the Islamic religion she doesn’t practice, an assignment she is determined to keep secret from her parents. Having to choose between leaving the Chinese booth or taking on double the workload leaves Sophie feeling conflicted. Why does she have to choose which part of herself to represent? Is it an issue with her or with how the Rainbow Fair is organized? Between juggling both booths, old and new friends, and learning more about her Muslim faith and ancestry, Sophie notices how her working on two booths starts to spark change throughout the student body. It turns out Sophie isn’t the only one at Monroe Middle School whose identity isn’t so simply categorized by the Rainbow Fair’s limited booths. One thing is for sure: this year’s Rainbow Fair won’t look anything like it did in the past, and Sophie beings to realize that that might not be a bad thing at all. About Force of Chaos. . .From the world of Hasbro’s Power Rangers entertainment franchise comes an action-packed, original YA novel from the point of view of Trini Kwan, the Yellow Ranger. Trini Kwan is trying to get through high school unnoticed. Nobody knows that she has trained for years in martial arts, and she prefers to let her classmates think she’s just the shy Asian girl.
But Trini’s world turns upside down when the homecoming game is attacked by an otherworldly winged beast with an army of clay soldiers. Unable to sit by while innocent people get hurt, Trini springs into action—alongside science genius Billy, her childhood best friend Zack, popular jock Jason, and new girl Kimberly.
In the aftermath, the five teenagers are recruited by an alien warrior named Zordon to become the new Power Rangers, charged with protecting the planet from an evil sorceress who recently escaped imprisonment. Suddenly thrust in the middle of a millenniums-long intergalactic war is hard enough, but getting her new teammates to work together proves to be a difficult task.
Can Trini help the others move past their rocky first impressions—and her own complicated history with Zack—to protect their home from destruction? And will she be able to finally accept her full self—and this new role? Diana Ma is a Chinese American author of Middle Grade and Young Adult books and an anti-oppressive educator. She was a 2019 We Need Diverse Books mentee and a 2021-2023 Highlights Foundation Muslim Storytellers Fellow. Her debut novel Heiress Apparently was a 2021 Washington State Book Award finalist in Young Adult Literature. She teaches at North Seattle College and believes that it’s important for all kids to recognize themselves as the heroes of the books they read. Her belief that diverse books help us create a better world is what drives her writing and teaching. About
Things Become Other Things. .
.
Photographer and essayist Craig Mod is a veteran of long solo walks. But in 2021, during the Covid shutdown of Japan’s borders, one particular walk around the Kumano Kodō routes – the ancient pilgrimage paths of Japan’s southern Kii Peninsula — took on an unexpectedly personal new significance. While passing the peninsula’s shrinking villages, Mod found himself reflecting on his own childhood in a post-industrial American town, his experiences as an adoptee, his unlikely relocation to Japan as a student at age 19, and his relationship with one lost friend, whose life was tragically cut short after their paths diverged. As the days passed, he considered why he has walked so rigorously and religiously during his twenty-five years as an immigrant in Japan, contemplating the power of walking itself. For Mod, solo walks are a tool to change the very structure of his mind, to better himself, and to bear witness to a quiet grace visible only when “you’re bored out of your skull and the miles left are long.”

He encounters whispering priests and foul-mouthed little kids who ask him "just what the heck are you, anyway?" Seattle Reads presents Ada Limón | Seattle Public Library-Central Library
May 16, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Seattle
About the Book
In recent years, our poetic landscape has evolved in profound and exciting ways. So has our planet. Edited and introduced by the twenty-fourth Poet Laureate of the United States, Ada Limón, this book challenges what we think we know about nature poetry, illuminating the myriad ways our landscapes--both literal and literary-are changing. “You Are Here” features fifty previously unpublished poems from some of the nation's most accomplished poets, including Joy Harjo, Diane Seuss, Rigoberto González, Jericho Brown, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Paul Tran, and more. Each poem engages with its author's local landscape--be it the breathtaking variety of flora in a national park, or a lone tree flowering persistently by a bus stop-offering an intimate model of how we relate to the world around us and a beautifully diverse range of voices from across the United States. Joyful and provocative, wondrous and urgent, this singular collection of poems offers a lyrical reimagining of what nature and poetry are today, inviting listeners to experience both anew. About Ada Limón: Ada Limón is the author of six books of poetry, including “The Carrying,” which won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her book “Bright Dead Things” was nominated for the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. Her most recent book of poetry, “The Hurting Kind,” was shortlisted for the Griffin Poetry Prize. She is also the author of two children’s books: “In Praise of Mystery,” with illustrations by Peter Sís; and “And, Too, The Fox,” which will be released in 2025. In October of 2023 she was awarded a MacArthur Genius Fellowship, and she was named a TIME magazine woman of the year in 2024. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship and wrote a poem that was engraved on NASA's Europa Clipper Spacecraft. It was launched to the second moon of Jupiter in October 2024. As the 24th Poet Laureate of The United States, her signature project is called “You Are Here” and focuses on how poetry can help connect us to the natural world. She will serve as Poet Laureate until the spring of 2025. About Seattle Reads: Seattle Reads is a city-wide book group, where people are encouraged to read and discuss the same book. It’s designed to deepen engagement in literature through reading and discussion.
Everyone is invited to participate in Seattle Reads by reading the featured book, joining in a book discussion, and/or attending programs with the featured writer. Seattle Reads “You Are Here” is presented in partnership with African-American Writers’ Alliance; Creative Aging at the Frye; Elliott Bay Books; Hugo House; KUOW Book Club; La Sala; the Memory Hub, UW Memory and Brain Wellness Center; Open Books: A Poem Emporium; Poetry Northwest; Pongo Poetry Project; 4Culture Poetry in Public; Seattle Arts & Lectures Youth Poetry Fellowship; Third Place Books. The heart opens when we are intent on appreciation
. Ron Kurtz, founder of Hakomi, said, “Loving presence is a state of being. It is pleasant, good for your health, rewarding in and of itself. It’s a state in which you feel openhearted and well intentioned.”
Loving presence
is often understood as being loving toward others; Hakomi illuminates this concept by introducing intentional appreciation. This transforms effort to effortlessness, and creates a flowering rooted in the soil of intention. Loving presence empowers us to meet the big, wild world, most of it beyond our control, with great curiosity, care, and positive intent.
