Patrick Renna signs A Little Slugger’s Guide to the Unwritten Rules... | Vroman's Bookstore
Feb 22, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Pasadena
Patrick Renna, best known for his role in the 1993 filmThe Sandlot, offers baseball-themed anecdotes and affirmations. Heartfelt reminders that life's a marathon, not a sprint, may be familiar, but many young readers will find them revelatory. The author also stresses that failure is just as much a part of life as success, encourages children to embrace individuality and work hard despite being the underdog, and emphasizes that practice shows commitment and prepares you for the big game or the test. All these lessons will be relatable to young people, and many are supported by real-life stories: basketball superstar Michael Jordan's short-lived stint in minor league baseball, an unexpected victory during Game One of the 2015 World Series, and Renna's willingness to swallow his fear when, as a young teen, he was handed a new script just an hour before shooting a pivotal scene inThe Sandlot. Each tidbit stands alone, but taken together, all 20 tenets provide a lively road map to life. The colorful spot art features images of diverse young baseball players, plus some visually appealing double-page spreads filled with movement and action. White space is used thoughtfully, allowing readers to reflect on how these words of wisdom might apply to them. A solid base hit, with guidance on the great American pastime--and life itself.

Torrey Peters discusses STAG DANCE | Vroman's Bookstore
Mar 18, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Pasadena
The kaleidoscopic follow-up to the bestsellingDetransition, Baby
In this collection of one novel and three novellas, Torrey Peters’s keen eye for the rough edges of community and desire push the limits of trans writing.
In Stag Dance, the titular novel, a group of restless lumberjacks working in an illegal winter logging outfit plan a dance that some of them will volunteer to attend as women. When the broadest, strongest, plainest of the axmen announces his intention to dance as a woman, he finds himself caught in a strange rivalry with a pretty young jack, provoking a cascade of obsession, jealousy, and betrayal that will culminate on the big night in an astonishing vision of gender and transition.
Three startling novellas surround Stag Dance: “Infect Your Friends and Loved Ones” imagines a gender apocalypse brought about by an unstable ex-girlfriend. In “The Chaser,” a secret romance between roommates at a Quaker boarding school brings out intrigue and cruelty. In the last novella, “The Masker,” a party weekend on the Las Vegas strip turns dark when a young crossdresser must choose between two guides: a handsome mystery man who objectifies her in thrilling ways, or a cynical veteran trans woman offering unglamorous sisterhood.
Acidly funny and breathtaking in its scope, with the inventive audacity of George Saunders or Jennifer Egan, Stag Dance provokes, unsettles, and delights. About the authorTorrey Petersis the bestselling author of the novel Detransition, Baby, which won the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel and was named one of the 100 Best Books of the 21st Century by The New York Times. It was also a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize, a finalist for the Brooklyn Public Library Book Prize, and longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction. She has an MFA from the University of Iowa and an MA in comparative literature from Dartmouth. Peters rides a pink motorcycle and splits her time between Brooklyn and an off-grid cabin in Vermont.

Mariana: Velázquez’s Portrait of a Queen at the Norton Simon Museum | Norton Simon Museum
Mar 22, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Pasadena
Accompany Catherine Hess on a tour of a special display at the Norton Simon: Mariana: Velázquez’s Portrait of a Queen from the Museo Nacional del Prado. Diego Velazquez (1599–1660) was a Spanish Baroque painter and the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV. Because of his masterful style of dramatic illumination and bold brushwork, Velázquez is sometimes referred to as a painter's painter. In Queen Mariana of Austria, he depicts the teenage monarch in magnificent splendor. It was Velázquez’s first major composition after returning to Madrid from several years in Rome, and it represents a distinctive and final chapter of the artist’s storied career. Exhibited on the West Coast for the first time, Velázquez’s sumptuous and monumental image is installed alongside the work of an international group of artists whose art was collected by the Habsburg court. This is a rare opportunity for us, as there are no other paintings by Velázquez in Californian public collections

When her mother is found dead in an alley, the family throne and fortune are suddenly up for grabs, and Nora will be pitted against her cousins in the Veritaz, the ultimate magical competition for power that determines the one family heir. But there's a surprise contestant this time: Lotte, the illegitimate daughter of Nora's aunt. When Lotte's absent mother retrieves her from the rural convent she'd abandoned her to, Lotte goes from being an orphan to surrounded by family. Unfortunately, most of them want her dead. And soon, Nora discovers that her mother's death wasn't random--it was murder. And the only person she can trust to uncover the truth of what happened is a rakish young reporter who despises everything Nora and her family stand for. While the dangers of the Veritaz competition threaten each of the Holtzfall girls, and the stark class differences turns political outrage to terrifing violence--the new cousins must fight to stay alive, no matter what.
