Proper Soul for the 21st Century - The Craig Charles House Party Show, BBC Radio 2 A great soul singer! - Tony Blackburn, BBC Radio London “Great songwriting and a beautiful voice” - Robert Elms - BBC Radio London “An artist on the rise... a considerable talent” - Blues & Soul Magazine Abi Farrell Live at The Folklore Rooms, Brighton Come and join soul vocalist and songwriter Abi Farrell and her acoustic band (Cy Atkinson; Keys, Alex Wiseman and Chloe Ravat; Backing Vocals) for her first ever headline show in Brighton at The Folklore Rooms. About Abi Farrell Abi Farrell was raised in rural Oxfordshire on a soundtrack of vocal powerhouses spanning the likes of Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Candi Staton and Carole King. Named 'an artist on the rise.. a considerable talent' by Blues and Soul Magazine, Abi is known for her effortlessly pure voice and lyrical dexterity, which is equally at home creating moving, introspective ballads as it is high-energy, empowering anthems. Lyrically, her music explores themes of identity, self-esteem, self-worth, empowerment, gender equality, mental health and social mobility. With an appeal that transcends generations, Abi's voice and songwriting explore the experience of navigating the world as a fiercely ambitious young woman from a working-class background. Abi's music has been consistently embraced by the UK & international soul scene since releasing a string of singles in collaboration with Big AC Records, including 'I Will See You Through', 'Empowered', 'Don't Follow Me' and 'Stepping Out Of Your Shadow', which were produced by Mitch Ayling of The Milk and pressed to limited edition 7 vinyl. Her releases have been championed by Craig Charles on BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music, who praised Abi's writing 'proper soul for the 21st century'. 'Don't Follow Me', a social commentary on misogyny, was premiered by Robert Elms on BBC Radio London and subsequently led to Abi performing the track on BBC Radio 4's Loose Ends. Though Abi has been captivating live audiences since her teenage years, she has recently opened stages for Izo Fitzroy, Dee C Lee and Stone Foundation, has headlined the BBC Introducing stage at Oxfordshire's The Big Feastival, and has performed at venues such as Pizza Express Jazz Club, Pizza Express Live Holborn, The 100 Club, The Cavern Club Liverpool, Servant Jazz Quarters, Colours Hoxton, Oslo Hackney, and The Louisiana, Bristol. In addition to her own artistry, Abi has performed backing vocals for many of her peers: Nick Corbin, Emma Noble, Carmy Love, The Milk, PM Warson, Denver Cuss and James Bone, and continues to lend her voice to music she loves. This show will mark Abi's first ever headline show in Brighton. It will celebrate the arrival of her brand new single '47 Days' and further new music due to arrive this summer. Tales – folk, fairy and epic – have a timeless quality. They are islands of memory and insight if we give them time to talk to us. This masterclass will set you firmly on your way to being a crime writer. Your tutor – a former police chief superintendent and now crime writer – will guide you through the nature of the genre and its sub genre, understanding the world of crime, villainy and policing, then we will get on to the actual writing. We will work through how to develop gripping characters, settings, how to plot, write authentic dialogue, and craft twists, arcs and endings. Come prepared for a blistering day and armed with all the questions you’ve always wanted to ask someone who’s done it for real and now makes it up for fiction. The session will be run by Graham Bartlett. After thirty years of policing, whereby Graham Bartlett became Brighton and Hove police’s chief superintendent, a senior homicide detective and a public order and firearms commander, he is now a best-selling crime fiction and non-fiction author, and police and crime advisor. His debut non-fiction, Death Comes Knocking, written with Peter James, was a Sunday Times Top Ten bestseller, and Peter and Graham followed this up with the critically acclaimed Babes in the Wood. Since then, Graham has had three solo crime novels published; Bad for Good (Sunday Times Top Ten Best Seller, Winner of Crime Fiction Lover Editors’ Choice Award 2022 and Nominated for Specsavers Debut of the Year 2022), Force of Hate, and City on Fire. I started teaching watercolours in March 2023 which is exciting because its been more than a year now! Multiple times week I run beginner watercolour classes where each session we have a different theme, generally to do with nature. This year I'm looking forward to running day courses, or some courses that span over a few weeks where we can get really stuck in to a particular subject. My background is in illustration which I studied in Bristol from 2016 - 2019. I have previously worked in a bit of editorial illustration under the name 'Zara Wilkins'. The thing I love most about watercolours is that it is so versatile. There are so many different ways it can be used, so many effects that you can create with different levels of water, pigment, paper weights and brushes. There doesn't really seem to be an end to what you can do with it. Teaching continues to be such a fun experience and I really look forward to every class I run. Join the audience for an engaging talk about the extraordinary life of David Hockney, presented in the form of a captivating graphic novel-style biography by Simon Elliott. This enlightening illustrated discussion follows the remarkable journey of Hockney's life, from his humble beginnings in Bradford to his early breakthrough as an artist. Delve into his vibrant and sun-soaked period in Los Angeles, and witness his triumphant return to the United Kingdom. This delightful book beautifully traces the captivating life and times of one of the most beloved artists in the world. Drawing inspiration from Hockney's powerful message that "spring cannot be cancelled," Simon immersed himself in Hockney's art, even learning to paint on an iPad as a tribute to Hockney's own iconic iPad drawings. Simon embarked on a colorful and joyous journey to create this biography with a twist. Simon Elliott, a criminal barrister, art enthusiast, and stand-up comedian, was granted the privilege of using and adapting Hockney's artwork with the artist's blessing. Rather than simply copying Hockney's work, Simon aimed to depict its essence and convey the underlying ideas in an informative and amusing manner. Hockney's life has been filled with excitement and laughter, and Simon sought to reflect that spirit in this masterpiece. Simon's work is a tribute to Hockney's uplifting message during the lockdown that resonated deeply with him. This graphic life story also highlights the joy, significance, and mindfulness benefits of creating art. In the spirit of inclusivity, all our events, including this one, are free. However, we kindly request that you only register if you genuinely plan to attend. If you are unable to make it, please inform us as soon as possible. We appreciate your understanding, as excessive no-shows can be challenging for us as a bookshop and disappointing for the author. Thank you for your cooperation.
