Upside Down hosts a Zikaron BaSalon event, to commemorate the story of Holocaust survivors through our artist-in-residence, Jake Rosen's story of his parents surviving the Holocaust. This event will include a testimony by Jake Rosen, who is a second-generation Holocaust survivor; an expression part where Jake will share his art relating to his story; and an open conversation part on a variety of topics on the memory of the Holocaust. About Jake Rosen: Jake Rosen was born to Holocaust survivors in Marçeille, France. His family emigrated from France to to live in St. Louis, MO where he grew up. He and his wife, Jeanne have 2 children who have recently had their own daughters. He has done art since he was little and refined his figure drawing and sculpting skills by attending the Art Students League of New York. He also graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a BFA in Painting. Professionally, he has freelanced as an illustrator, pastored an Evangelical Church and led a Messianic Congregation during his career in St. Louis. Jake has shown “The Vision of Isaiah” series in various St Louis galleries and in New York City. This is a series of monumental paintings which depict the poetry of the prophet Isaiah. Recently he has been investigating personal aspects of the Holocaust in his painted work and has also been able to present his mother’s story of survival in Los Angeles. Simultaneously, a naked, green, feminine artist traces the contours of her devilish destiny on her sketch pad, and then within an imaginary dating app. The “advanced search” becomes a kind of contemporary, queer, love poem. An original poem from Fernando A. Funes - Funes is a writer-performer who produces shows in Los Angeles including Duo It Again at The Lyric Hyperion, hosted by his duo improv team, FernGully. He also produces The Dazed & Confused Poetry Club, an intimate poetry show at The Glendale Room. And he is the first-ever Director of The Lyric Hyperion & Glendale Room Training Center. His short film, “The American Dream” has been featured in over 43 film festivals, including the Philadelphia Latino Film Festival. He writes a poem for every day of the year.
