Start your day with a hike through meadow areas and then into the woods edge at Kellys Run Nature Preserve. We will traverse an old roadway down to the water, then hike through the ravine, crossing the water several times while following the stream. Experience the change in temperature and sunlight between the higher elevation at the parking area to the waterway in the ravine. Discussion will include the microclimate that occurs in this glen (and others in the Susquehanna Riverlands) that allows for large rhododendron groves. If desired, bring a packed lunch that can be enjoyed at the picnic tables upon completion of the hike. What to Expect: This hike is approximately 4 miles in total distance with significant elevation changes. The hike surface will vary from soft grassy pathways to rocky areas that require some scrambles. The trail has several water crossings, and hiking poles are highly recommended. There is a port-a-john available on site. This hike is recommended for adults. What to Bring : Sturdy, closed toe shoes are highly recommended. Bring water and a snack. Binoculars are optional. Hiking poles are strongly recommended. Event Leader Bio : Mary Patterson, Interpretive Ranger with the Lancaster Conservancy, is passionate about wildflowers, butterflies, and all the wonderful things that can be discovered outside. She is keenly in tune to the herbaceous plants that keep meadows and forest floors interesting. Mary also leads the local Susquehanna Nature Journal Club and is an active PA Master Naturalist. Learn about the outdoor ethics of Leave No Trace in this morning workshop. Gain an understanding of the science behind the LNT principles from a trained instructor while enjoying time out on the trail! What to Expect: We will participate in several learning activities while hiking along the trail and meadow area before wrapping up our time at the pavillion. All hiking will be on fairly level surfaces and grassy trails with some elevation gain. Participants will receive an LNT certificate at the completion of this course.
