Dunant: Una questione di principio | Teatro Gaetano Donizetti- Bergamo
Sep 13, 2024 (UTC+1)ENDED
Turin
Siamo in piena Belle Epoque.

Tentacular Writing?” | Metropolitan City of Turin
Jun 23–Jun 26, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Turin
Castello del Valentino Dialogue “Tentacular Thinking! Tentacular Writing?” June 23-26, 2025, Torino, Castello del Valentino Keynote speakers: Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen (Yale School of Architecture) Adam Sharr (University of Newcastle & Routledge) Albena Yaneva (Politecnico di Torino & GSAPP, Columbia University) Invited tutors: Demetra Kourri and Benjamin Blackwell (Manchester School of Architecture) Organising committee: Alessandro Armando and Sofia Nannini (Politecnico di Torino) The Castello del Valentino Dialogues is a platform that aims at creating a dynamic forum for crafting alternative ways of thinking, exploring and writing the urban. Bringing together PhD students and early career researchers with an interest in Architecture and Urbanism along with established scholars, writers and publishers, it invites a reflection that can challenge conventional modes of thinking and research. Participants will debate topical issues in the field of urban and architectural studies, try out new creative writing techniques and methodological tactics, and enhance their skills for presenting and publishing research. * The 1st edition of the Castello Dialogues is inspired by Donna Haraway’s appeal to “tentacular thinking” (2016), promoted also by Isabelle Stengers, Bruno Latour, Anna Tsing, Richard Sennett, Marilyn Strathern, Tim Ingold, among others. Unlike the critical and cultural thinking, the “tentacular thinking” is one that does not rely on determinisms, but is relational, makes attachments and detachments, traces cuts and knots, and weaves paths and consequences. One that is open and entwined. One that is also able to make a difference. The Castello Dialogue 2025 engages with the questions: “How to think of the urban in a tentacular way?” “How to draw on a multiverse of articulating and interfering disciplinary offerings, passions and languages to explore the urban differently?” “How can tentacular thinkers become tentacular writers?” “How can the tentacular approach affect the way we design and transform the city?” In an urban world broken by extractivism and social and climate disparities, the many “intrusions of Gaia” (Stengers 2017) compels us to re-invent the tactics of research and writing: to craft new strategies for mundane re-description of assemblages through situated work, to better articulate the various alliances of all ontological sorts (technologies, colleagues, molecules, other species), and to thoroughgoingly commit to an ecology of practice. How to do this? By fashioning new methodological tactics? By envisioning new writing techniques? Can traditional histories give way to alternative ways of figuring and storytelling – geostories, Gaia stories, symchthonic stories, ethnographic stories of urban living or design, multi-layered, webbed, braided and tentacular archival narratives of architecture? * The workshop which spans 4 days and will contain the following strands: Presentations of work-in-progress:participants are invited to present on aspects of their own work, with a view to encouraging discussion of theoretical frameworks and empirical results, and supporting publication.Writing ateliers: participants will engage in a set of exercises in “tentacular writing”, especially designed for them. They will work in small groups with expert tutors to discuss narrative techniques and writing style.Methodological experiments: participants will conduct small methodological experiments, which will help them reflect on the conventional repertoire of methods used in urban and architectural research.Debates (i.e. film screenings, lectures, meeting with publishers): hosted in the sumptuous Castello del Valentino overlooking the river Po, the debates will provide a relaxed atmosphere, allowing for speculative and shared reflections.Students can choose to enrol both in the writing ateliers and methodological experiments, or alternatively dedicate more time to one of these strands. * We welcome applications from PhD candidates in the history and theory of architecture, urbanism, and urban planning, as well as design practitioners with expertise in the relevant areas. We also invite applications from doctoral candidates and early career scholars in adjacent disciplines such as human geography, design studies, urban anthropology, philosophy, science and technology studies, and the arts. The workshop will consolidate the theoretical knowledge of researchers and will animate their methodological and field-specific creativity. Combining lectures, discussions, writing exercises and field tasks, it will offer a great opportunity to jump-start a research project or advance knowledge on an existing one in a supportive environment by benefiting from peer analysis, constructive critique and debate. Each participant will have the opportunity to develop their research position as proposed in their original “Expression of Interest”, to address a specific methodological or theoretical problem related to the workshop theme and construct a new piece of writing based on original empirics that will contribute in some way to their current ongoing research project. This text will be considered for publication in the journal Ardeth. Situated in the city of Turin, the Politecnico di Torino provides an inspiring location for scholars to come together from across disciplines and geographies. The programme is also supplemented with a guided tour of the city of Torino. The workshop will be hosted by the newly founded Invisible Cities Lab, DAD, Politecnico di Torino. It will qualify for 5 credits or 2.5 ECTS points.

Alfredo Pirri: Fare spazio | Turin
Mar 21–Jul 27, 2024 (UTC+1)ENDED
Turin
The gallery’s three rooms display recent works divided into two main groups.
The first, entitled (‘Comrades and Angels’), in the entrance hall, consists of a series of 32 watercolours on paper dedicated to Antonio Gramsci. The artist created these between 2022 and 2023, in parallel with the work on a large public and permanent installation dedicated to the statesman commissioned by the Apulia Region. This set of pictorial and spatial works originates from some passages taken from Gramsci’s letters, one in particular in which he speaks of the state of the prisoner: (1).
On the bottom of each of these watercolours, with their vivid and sometimes metallic colours, is a reproduction of one of the covers of the notebooks that Antonio Gramsci wrote during his imprisonment in the Turi prison, printed digitally and in a format faithful to the original. The regular shapes, imprinted in watercolour on the photographic reproductions (mainly using the pad technique), allude to geometries that seem to compose and decompose before our eyes to be captured in ‘real time’, which fixes them in a pose momentarily frozen in its visible form but ready to change configuration. Within the space of the sheet, they create magnetic tensions produced by the colours that allude to architectures imagined by the free and luminous meditation of Gramsci locked up in his cell. The coloured bands are painted freely over or alongside reproductions of these notebook covers from the early 1930s, dialoguing with them both chromatically and geometrically. The covers are split between some distinguished by the seriousness of dull monochrome colours, others characterised by a mimetic reference to precious materials such as crocodile skin, and many distinguished by imaginary and exotic architectures from those distant worlds that Italy would shortly invade and try to conquer. The guiding spirit of these works therefore consists in conceiving a ‘tribute’ to the thinking of Antonio Gramsci not in a static or rhetorical manner but by highlighting that that made him a champion of freedom and one of the constant references of our civilised living.
On display together with this collection is the sculpture/model of the monumental work of the same title (‘Comrades and Angels’) that the artist created in Bari within the building housing the Polo bibliotecario Regionale Pugliese in the former Rossani barracks.
The second group, exhibited in the third room, consists of five large works made with mixed techniques: watercolour on Arches paper mounted on aluminium, Plexiglas with metal inclusions, acrylic paints and varnished wooden frames. These works, unlike the first group, are more monochromatic.
Their colours, originally bright and primary, are modified and muted through the constant addition of a medium grey, a that dilutes the luminosity and brings the dominant tone back towards an indistinct and hazy atmosphere. It is as if the works were not so much in mist or vapour, but rather painted directly from these ‘materials’ that impregnate the paper backing and from which emerge circular shapes like waves of sound or water that expand in space with a heavy sound.
They appear to be the natural development of the works already shown by the artist at the Gallery in Torre Pellice (Alfredo Pirri, ‘Motore’, 2019) where there was a series of watercolours that rendered the same motion of circles that extend into space dynamically through the expansive use of colour. In the works on display in the exhibition, circular inserts of pastel-coloured Plexiglas are superimposed over these dynamic surfaces, sometimes enriched (and embellished) with metallic brass or copper straws that shine on the greyish backgrounds. As if they were celestial bodies caught in their moment of greatest splendour, on the borderline between appearing and disappearing, or poetic and dreamy phrases shining with reflected light. (2)
Finally, in the smallest room, at the centre of the larger ones, tensions are decanted by hosting a solitary work, created with transparent and reflective colours applied on a Plexiglas surface that is also transparent. The work radiates into the empty space through the pure energy of colour. A solitary work for a room as silent as a chapel... or a cell.

Explore the captivating world of the Savoia and Visconti noblewomen, their romances, habits, power dynamics, and constraints in a fascinating encounter with Giani and Frontino Savoia e Visconti. These two dynasties profoundly shaped Italy's fate in their unique ways. While the war-inclined Savoia rose to become Kings of Italy, the cultured Visconti, despite nearing the royal title at their peak, eventually declined amidst the turbulent times that saw the French and Spanish vying for control of the Peninsula. Beyond renowned leaders and statesmen, these dynasties were also defined by remarkable women of equal or greater stature - from ladies and duchesses to queens and even enchantresses, often overlooked by history. Gian Luca Giani and Christian Frontino delve into these intriguing female figures in their works "Le donne di Casa Savoia" and "Le donne di Casa Visconti," shedding light on a neglected aspect of our past. Join the enlightening event "Regine, amanti, filantrop e maghe – Le donne di casa Savoia e Visconti si raccontano" on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at 6:30 pm at the prestigious Circolo dei Lettori on 9 Via Gianbattista Bogino in Torino. The event will be moderated by Katia Bernacci. Reservation is required to secure your spot for this enriching experience.
