Messiaen's Harawi | International Anthony Burgess Foundation
Jun 6, 2025 (UTC+0)
Cambridge
The texts of the cycle are highly surrealist form, generally comprised of isolated symbols, raised to the ultimate symbolic ideal in that they are emancipated from grammatical on syntactical constructions. Messiaen himself wrote the libretto; following Wagner's music dramas and Debussy who set his own symbolist poetry in his four Proses lyriques. The work borrows melodies from numerous traditional folksongs of the Andes as compiled in a book by Raoul d'Harcourt and his wife Marguerite Béclard. In addition to the French text, Harawi also uses Quechua words, some faux, some real, not for their semantic meaning, but for their sound, that is, their timbral and syllabic qualities. He would later reuse this practice in the Rechants and Saint François d'Assise. Despite these inspirations, his own musical style prevails. Performers

Burning Down the House | Department of Politics and International Studies
May 21, 2025 (UTC+1)
Cambridge
The speaker:
Mark Blyth
is a Scottish-American political economist. He is currently the William R. Rhodes Professor of International Ecnomics and Professor of International and Public Affairs at Brown University. At Brown, Blyth additionally directs the William R. Rhodes Center for International Economics and Finance at the
Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs
. He will be speaking on the topic of "
Burning Down the House: Carbon Politics, American Power, and the Almighty Dollar
".
More on this lecture:
The US has 330 million citizens, which is less than 5% of the world’s population. Yet its GDP footprint is around 25% of global GDP. How is that possible? While leading-edge technological innovation and a giant military undoubtedly help, what’s really been the secret sauce for the past 30 plus years is the global role of the dollar. The rest of the world needs a savings asset and the US provides it through massive debt issuance and the global role of the dollar in international trade. This has enabled the US to import vast quantities of TVs, Cars, Computers, and everything else you can think of, while paying for it all with digital IOU'S that bear 2% called Treasury bills.
The problem with this model is that if you import everything you stop making your own things and you hollow out your industrial base. Both Biden and Trump saw this. Biden sought green re-industrialization through the IRA. Trump seeks re-industrialization through doubling down on the carbon-economy behind massive protective tariffs, which constitutes the growth model of GOP states in the US.
If a Trump administration doubles down on carbon, the short term boost to growth through lower input prices plus deregulation will be huge. Possibly enough to propel a two-term administration. Climate denial can be profitable. But the rest of the world, China, Europe and East and South Asia, will continue to develop the green technologies needed to survive in the 21st century. The US will fall behind in this critical area as the countries involved in the green transition trade more intensely with each other. The lock on effect is that the global role of the dollar shrinks. First, because the issuer doesn’t like the side effects. Second, because in a post carbon world, who needs a currency that denominates and is back by carbon assets that no one else uses any more? In short, our addiction to carbon and the politics that it produces risks burning down the house.

Alison Bechdel at The Brattle Theatre | The Brattle Theatre
May 22, 2025 (UTC-4)
Cambridge
Harvard Book Store welcomes beloved
New York Times
bestselling author
Alison Bechdel
—author of
Fun Home
, which was a
Time
magazine #1 Book of the Year graphic memoir and was adapted into a Tony Award–winning musical—to celebrate the release of her new comic novel
Spent
, a laugh-out-loud, brilliant, and passionately political work of autofiction.
Ticketing
Tickets include admission for one and one hardcover copy of
Spent
pre-signed by the author.
About
Spent
In Alison Bechdel’s hilariously skewering and gloriously cast new comic novel confection, a cartoonist named Alison Bechdel, running a pygmy goat sanctuary in Vermont, is existentially irked by a climate-challenged world and a citizenry on the brink of civil war. She wonders: Can she pull humanity out of its death spiral by writing a scathingly self-critical memoir about her own greed and privilege?
Meanwhile, Alison’s first graphic memoir about growing up with her father, a taxidermist who specialized in replicas of Victorian animal displays, has been adapted into a highly successful TV series. It’s a phenomenon that makes Alison, formerly on the cultural margins, the envy of her friend group (recognizable as characters, now middle-aged and living communally in Vermont, from Bechdel’s beloved comic strip
Dykes to Watch Out For
).
As the TV show
Death and Taxidermy
racks up Emmy after Emmy—and when Alison’s Pauline Bunyanesque partner Holly posts an instructional wood-chopping video that goes viral—Alison’s own envy spirals. Why couldn’t
she
be the writer for a critically lauded and wildly popular reality TV show…like
Queer Eye
...showing people how to free themselves from consumer capitalism and live a more ethical life?!!
Spent
’s rollicking and masterful denouement—making the case for seizing what’s true about life in the world at this moment, before it’s too late—once again proves that “nobody does it better” (
New York Times Book Review
) than the real Alison Bechdel.
Bio
Alison Bechdel’s
cult following for her early comic strip
