LASER Talk: Navigating Grief, Fear, and Denial in a Time of Ecological Unraveling with Ruth Wallen and Beverly Naidus Ruth Wallen will present Walking with Sequoias: Bearing Witness to Loss and Rebirth Ruth Wallen www.ruthwallen.net is a multi-media artist and writer whose work is dedicated to encouraging dialogue around ecological and social justice. After working as an environmental scientist, she turned to art to pose questions beyond disciplinary boundaries, address values informing environmental policy, and contribute to the developing field of ecological art. Her interactive installations, nature walks, web sites, artist books, performative lectures, and writing have been widely distributed/published and exhibited. Active in the border region, she has written about race, gender and visual culture, was a member of the multinational artist collective Las Comadres, and a Fulbright Lecturer at the Autonomous University of Baja California, Tijuana. Committed to student-centered learning, she served as chair and core faculty in the MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts Program at Goddard College for many years. Her work is deeply informed by Buddhist practice. Beverly Naidus will present Art as Medicine and Compass Beverly (Bee) Naidus www.beverlynaidus.net has attempted to subvert the dominant culture since she started to crawl. Despite discouragement from her family to choose art as a profession, creative practices like music, movement, image & altar making, and writing, claimed her. She found solace with plant & animal kin from an early age and identifies strongly as a pollinator and sees herself as part of growing mycelial networks. As a young artist, she achieved unexpected recognition in the NYC art world but was able to flee the competitive pretentiousness of that strange subculture by being offered gigs teaching art for social change at various institutions, both academic and alternative. Her partnership with her late husband inspired new ways of collaborating with community, activist movements, and the sacred. Her work has taken many forms from artist’s books to street art interventions. Her audience-participatory work has often been concerned with healing trauma and creating community through sharing vulnerable stories. She left academia in 2020 and is currently facilitating workshops as an independent including an online program called, “Art Medicine for Catastrophic and Transformative Times.” She is completing her second book, a fractured memoir, that will inspire readers to reimagine the world through healing stories, dancing with grief, and building something within that which needs to collapse to help future generations thrive. Both Ruth and Beverly will be SFAI artists in residence at and SciArt Santa Fe is grateful to SFAI for supporting this LASER! This event is free and accessible to all. What does it mean to care for a loved one 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year? To be immersed in daily joy, sadness, and struggle? Only caregivers themselves can tell us. During the fall and winter of 2024, Access Gallery and PASCO collaborated with six families caring for loved ones with significant disabilities giving them the tools to exercise their voice behind a lens. We wanted to give the creative voice to the families rather than an outsider. Access Gallery provided photography instruction, cameras, and mentoring to caregivers as they documented their day-to-day experiences into a collaborative creative experience. The result? Candid, day in the life photographs of good times, bad times, and occasionally ugly times–the layered reality of caregiving. Part of Month of Photography Denver, Labor of Love is a homage to these families and their daily experiences. On the community art wall Jack H. one of our newest artists explores the ideas of reflection and community through self-portraiture. Access Gallery will offer ASL interpretation at this event and all Third Friday events at the gallery. Information Source: Access Gallery | eventbrite

About the book: In 1932 Berlin, a trans man named Bertie and his friends spend carefree nights at the Eldorado Club, the epicenter of Berlin's thriving queer community. An employee of the renowned Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld at the Institute of Sexual Science, Bertie works to improve queer rights in Germany and beyond. But everything changes when Hitler rises to power. The Institute is raided, the Eldorado is shuttered, and queer people are rounded up. Bertie barely escapes with his girlfriend, Sofie, to a nearby farm. There they take on the identities of an elderly couple and live for more than a decade in isolation. In the final days of the war, with their freedom in sight, Bertie and Sofie find a young trans man collapsed on their property, still dressed in Holocaust prison clothes. They vow to protect him--not from the Nazis, but from the Allied forces who are arresting queer prisoners while liberating the rest of the country. Ironically, as the Allies' vise grip closes on Bertie and his family, their only salvation is to flee to the United States. Brimming with hope, resilience, and the enduring power of community, The Lilac People tells an extraordinary story inspired by real events and recovers an unknown moment of World War II and trans history. Join us for an author talk and book signing with Anna Malaika Tubbs, author of Erased: What American Patriarchy Has Hidden From Us. Anna will be in conversation with Dani Newsum of Cobalt Advocates. Books will be available for purchase at the event, or for pre-order with your ticket purchase. About the book: In Erased, Anna Malaika Tubbs recovers all that American patriarchy has tried to destroy. Patriarchy has oppressed women and denied their contributions worldwide, but the United States of America has its own unique gendered hierarchy. Dr. Anna Malaika Tubbs applies her signature blend of approachable yet rigorous analysis in this definitive and groundbreaking history of American patriarchy. She proves that humanity in the United States is determined by gender in a limited and flawed binary that is also always tied to whiteness. Tubbs shows how a fabricated hierarchy became so deeply ingrained over time that it now goes unnoticed, along with everything it intentionally conceals. From the founding fathers to the current Supreme Court justices, from the treatment of enslaved women to the American maternal health crises, from the exclusion of women in the Constitution to the continued lack of an Equal Rights Amendment, Tubbs brings together academic research, the stories of freedom fighters both past and present, and her own experiences to reveal what is erased in the wake of American patriarchy. The system has survived by hiding the tools that are necessary to dismantle it. But Tubbs beautifully reminds us that those tools, including our intuition, courage, ancient wisdom, and power, are still well within our reach. Erased is the story of the United States from a new perspective: one where the people who shaped this country–who have been oppressed and whose contributions have been denied–are at the center, reminding us that we can restore what has been strategically kept from us. Once again, Dr. Anna Malaika Tubbs has written a book that will be a touchstone for conversations on gender, race, and equity for years to come. About the author: Anna Malaika Tubbs is a New York Times bestselling author and multidisciplinary expert on current and historical understandings of race, gender, and equity. With a Ph.D. in Sociology and a Masters in Multidisciplinary Gender Studies from the University of Cambridge in addition to a Bachelors in Medical Anthropology from Stanford University, Anna translates her academic knowledge into stories that are clear and engaging. Her articles have been published by TIME Magazine, New York Magazine, CNN, Motherly, the Huffington Post, For Harriet, The Guardian, Darling Magazine, and Blavity. Anna’s storytelling also takes form in her talks, including her TED Talk that has been viewed 2 million times, as well as the scripted and unscripted screen projects she has in development. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and their three kids. Information Source: Petals & Pages | eventbrite

Join us for an author talk and book signing with award-winning author Lori Ostlund to discuss her latest short story collection, Are You Happy? Lori will be in conversation with author EJ Levy. About Are You Happy?: Nine masterful stories that explore class, desire, identity, and the spectrum of violence in America–and in American families–against women and the LGBTQ+ community. A collection filled with surprise, dark humor, and deep compassion, from the author of The Bigness of the World, winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction. In Lori Ostlund’s exquisite collection, Are You Happy?, she examines the lives of people who have left their place and culture of origin behind. Set in Minnesota, New Mexico, and California, we watch Ostlund’s characters as they try–and often fail–to make peace with their pasts while navigating their present relationships and responsibilities. In deceptively straightforward prose Ostlund delves deep into the interpersonal and grapples with the compulsion to make others happy–and the elusiveness of being happy oneself. As a woman mourns the premature loss of her best friend’s youth, two parents the life of their son, a queer couple their feeling of safety, and a daughter her family’s political integrity, Ostlund paints a distinctly American portrait of violence manifest at its most intimate scale. Richly layered and structurally complex, these stories have a novelistic feel. Lori Ostlund is a master of the form and Are You Happy? showcases her best work to date.
