Around Group f.64: Legacies and Counterhistories in Bay Area Photography | San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
Nov 23, 2024–Jul 31, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Conversations at a party in Oakland in 1932 changed the history of photography. At that gathering, several now-iconic Bay Area figures — including Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, and Edward Weston — banded together to form Group f.64, a collective dedicated to “true” photography and the rejection of the prevailing style of Pictorialism, which mimicked painting. The group’s name was technical, referring to the camera lens setting that permits the greatest depth of field, but their mission was creative: to make photographs of startling clarity and beauty that rivaled art made in other mediums. Although Group f.64 lasted for less than a year, its legacy endured, marking the Bay Area as an epicenter for modernist photography.

Kunié Sugiura: Photopainting | San Francisco
Apr 26–Sep 14, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
This exhibition is the first US survey of the work of Kunié Sugiura, an artist whose boundary-defying engagement with the photographic medium spans over sixty years. Born in Nagoya, Japan, in 1942, Sugiura came to the United States in 1963 to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she majored in photography. After graduation, she relocated to New York and has lived there ever since.
Sugiura’s practice embraces a hybrid approach, blending various mediums and expressing her bicultural identity. The balancing of dualisms —Japanese/American, organic/human-made, and painting/photography — defines her work. Sugiura has stated that her cross-fertilization of photography with painting and sculpture partly stems from her desire that photography be taken seriously as an art form.
Gil Duran on Trump, Tech and “The Nerd Reich” | The Commonwealth Club
Jul 14, 2025 (UTC-7)
San Francisco
The Bay Area is typically known as an incubator of left-of-center ideas. But in recent years, it has become known as the source of an ideology influencing the Trump administration, a belief system journalist Gil Duran describes as “tech facism.” In his newsletter “The Nerd Reich,” Duran looks at how controversial writers such as Curtis Yarvin—who has argued that the United States should be a “monarchy” run by a “CEO”—have shaped the views of some of Trump’s top advisors, like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel, as well as vice-president J.D. Vance.
Duran, who formerly served as spokesman and political strategist for Jerry Brown, Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris, joins us to talk about his reporting on this distinctive strain of Silicon Valley conservatism and its influence on local and national politics.

Dr. De Kai on Raising AI: An Essential Guide to Its Use | The Commonwealth Club
Jul 17, 2025 (UTC-7)
San Francisco
In a world in which artificial intelligence will change everything, we need a leader to illuminate the impact of “the automation of thought” on our way of life. How is the widespread use of AI impacting our world, our minds, and our future—not just as a technical innovation but as a mode of culture? Should we be afraid?
De Kai has been a trailblazer in the world of AI. He invented and built the world’s first global-scale online language translator that spawned Google Translate, Yahoo Translate, and Microsoft Bing Translator. He brings decades of his paradigm-shifting work at the nexus of artificial intelligence and society to help people make sense of their interactions with AI at both personal and collective levels—ethically and responsibly. While Hollywood narratives of AI destroying humanity might be overblown, the age of AI is reshaping the future of civilization.
What should each of us do as the responsible adults in the room? De Kai asks critical, overlooked questions requiring urgent attention.
Dr. De Kai is professor of computer science and engineering at HKUST and distinguished research scholar at Berkeley’s International Computer Science Institute. He was honored by the Association for Computational Linguistics as one of only 17 Founding Fellows. De Kai is an independent director of the AI ethics think tank The Future Society and was one of eight inaugural members of Google’s AI ethics council.
His book
Raising AI
provides an accessible framework to navigate the enormous impact of AI upon human culture, our values, and the flow of information. De Kai demonstrates that society can not only survive the AI revolution but also flourish in a new world where we all play our part in a more humane, compassionate, and understanding society—alongside our artificial children.
Our moderator, Camille Crittenden, Ph.D., is the executive director of CITRIS and the Banatao Institute and co-founder of the CITRIS Policy Lab and EDGE (Expanding Diversity and Gender Equity) in Tech at UC. She served as chair of the California Blockchain Working Group in 2019–20 and co-chaired the Student Experience subcommittee of the University of California’s Presidential Working Group on Artificial Intelligence. She continues to serve on the UC AI Council.

SHADES | 1015 Folsom
Jul 18, 2025 (UTC-7)
San Francisco
Friday July 18th, 2025
DJ Dials & 1015 Folsom Present:
SHADES
Alix Perez (Belgium/UK) and Eprom (USA) are SHADES
Perez found his rise to fame in drum n bass, releasing on Shogun Audio, Exit Recordings amongst many other labels and collaborating with the foremost names in dance and electronic music such as Noisia, Foreign Beggars, dBridge, and many more.
Eprom gained his well-deserved success through his innovative take on bass music, a unique sound that has the likes of Gaslamp Killer, Kutmah, D-Styles singing his praises and supporting his music.
SHADES exemplifies slanted grooves, a deep pocket and hard yet graceful composition. The debut self-titled EP (released on Alpha Pup) is a truly unique body of work.
Aware of each other’s music for some time before meeting, Perez and Eprom first crossed paths at the 2013/2014 Northern Bass festival in New Zealand. The following summer they met again at the Red Bull Studios LA producing the Foreign Beggars’ Modus EP. This initial studio session led to further collaborations and SHADES was born.
XLR8R have rightly said “music that’s not only a legitimate full-frontal assault in the same vein as tunes from that golden era of gluttonous bass and synths, but that embraces that ethos while giving it a more polished feel”.

World Record!!! Longest Skating Serpentine | 6th Avenue Skate Park
Jul 19, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Come out with the Holy Rollers of the Church of 8 Wheels and the skaters from the Black Rock Roller Disco (Burning Man Theme Camp) as we attempt to break the World Record for the longest skating serpentine. This all takes place at 6th Ave Skatin' Place in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The event will take place on Saturday, July 19, 2025. Registration will open at 9 AM at Skatin' Place at 6th Ave and JFK Promenade. Here you can pick up your bib numbers and/or register for the event. The record attempt will begin at 1PM. After the world record attempt, we will move the skate action to Skatin' Place, 6th Ave. and Kennedy Drive in Golden Gate Park. There will be the San Francisco Skaters’ Showcase at 2PM where roller skaters will show off their skills. There is even a segment where the audience will join in the coolest line dancing skate groove .
According to the official rules, EVERYONE MUST BE REGISTERED FOR THE WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT. The registration fee is $20. Skate rentals are available for $10.
HERE ARE THE RULES - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!! There are quite a few guidelines that must be followed in order for our Guinness World Record attempts to be validated. Please read all the info below and be prepared when the time comes to skate. Every participant must be registered for the world record event. Each participant will receive a bib number that must be placed in plain sight on their chest area. The event will be videotaped from many angles and by many media people. The registrations, bib numbers, videotapes and media coverage are all crucial elements in the verification process. The World’s Longest Skating Serpentine is both inline and regular roller skates. A skating serpentine is a long line of skaters that are linked hand to hand. The leader or “head“ of the serpentine moves forward and the chain of skaters follow. The head makes turns to the left and to the right as it moves forward forming a snake-like motion with the chain of skaters. This is the serpentine. The chain must travel at least 400 meters in an unbroken chain.HOLDING ONTO CLOTHING, BACKPACKS OR ANYTHING OTHER THAT THE PERSON'S HAND IN THE CHAIN VOIDS THE RECORD ATTEMPT.IF THE CHAIN BREAKS AT ANY POINT THE ATTEMPT IS VOID. Be aware of the kind of clothing that you wear. We want everyone to be bright and colorful, but we don't want you or others tripping or being interfered with by hats, long coats, scarfs, feather boas or other articles that would cause the record to be voided. You must be a competent skater to participate. No pets are allowed. No dogs on leashes. A competent child skate will be allowed, but if you present a child that is deemed not competent enough to participate, you will be responsibility for the trama that child will suffer from the experience, so don't make us say no to your child because we will if we have to. For more information contact David Miles at 415-752-1967 or e-mail toSk8GodFather@earthlink.net See you in Golden Gate Park!!!
