The Ishibashi Foundation Collection now consists of approximately 3,000 works, including Impressionist paintings from the latter half of the nineteenth century, modern paintings from the twentieth century, modern Japanese paintings from the Meiji period on, postwar Abstract paintings, early modern art from Japan and elsewhere in East Asia, and ancient Greek and Roman art. Here we introduce, throughout the year, a variety of works selected from the collection. Special Section Matisse’s Studio Interiors were consistently important elements in paintings by Henri Matisse (1869-1954). Particularly from the 1940s on, his studio was a vitally important space, where daily life and creating came together. This exhibition, in connection with the acquisition of his Dancer and Rocaille Armchair, Black Background (1942), explores, through works in the Ishibashi Foundation Collection and from multiple viewpoints, the role of the studio in Matisse’s paintings.

This is the museum's first bird-themed special exhibition. It introduces the origins and evolution of birds, and displays many specimens based on the evolutionary lineage hypothesis revealed by the latest research using genome analysis.

The Roppongi Christmas Market, now in its 15th year, aims to recreate the feeling of the world's largest Christmas market in Stuttgart, Germany - albeit on a much smaller scale! The market will host seven different shops that will sell over 1,500 different items including ornaments, wreaths, and other Christmas home decor items. A variety of German delicacies will also be available at the event, including sausages, goulash, and the popular holiday drink glühwein. There is no admission fee to enjoy the atmosphere of the market, but bring some yen if you plan on making any purchases.

Actually, a better question would be "What can't you see there?" First, there are paintings and drawings. Lots and lots of paintings and drawings. Some are already finished, on display, and awaiting your assessment (or purchase). Others are works in progress. Large (sometimes gigantic) canvases and walls are set up so that festival-goers can see the artists hard at work. There are also handmade crafts, another broadly defined term that includes everything from jewelry and book covers to toys, metalwork, woodwork, musical instruments, dolls, household items, and even clothing. One section of the festival is the "Dark Room," reserved for artists whose work is best viewed in the shadows. These pieces are often abstract collections of illumination, paintings under blacklight, and more. Rock bands perform passionately. Dancers in costumes gyrate to the latest pop songs. In one corner, an SM-style bondage demonstration is taking place. Elsewhere, students studying film makeup and costumes are applying makeup for scars and wounds to customers. Just when you think you've seen all the exhibits, you suddenly realize there are two more huge halls. The design festival is massive, consisting of aisles of multiple rooms on multiple floors of the building. Plan to get there early and stay late if you want to see all the exhibits. There's a food court with a variety of food vendors offering both Japanese and international cuisine.

In this exhibition, two artists who continue to be active at the forefront of contemporary art, Aoki Noe and Mishima Ritsue, will install their works in various places in the museum and illuminate the Art Deco decorative space from a new perspective. Aoki has opened up new horizons of expression with her sculptures that draw lines in space using iron, while Mishima has scooped up the energy of the place and converted it into light through her colorless and transparent glass works. The materials "iron" and "glass" that the two artists use are blessings of nature that have been passed down to us over time, and are also used extensively in the decoration of the venue, the former Asaka Palace, for chandeliers, reliefs, tympanums on doors, etc. The two artists have visited this place many times and engaged in dialogue with the decorative space of the 1930s to create a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition plan for this exhibition. The aquarium’s famous dolphin show will also be part of the Autumn Edition, with different shows during the day and at night.
