Nationalmuseum of Sweden: Drawing Collection Exhibition - From Renaissance to Baroque | The National Museum of Western Art

Jul 1–Sep 28, 2025 (UTC+9)
Tokyo
Exhibitions
The National Museum of Western Art will hold the "Nationalmuseum of Sweden Drawing Collection - From Renaissance to Baroque" exhibition from July 1st to September 28th, 2025. The Nationalmuseum of Sweden, located in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is one of the oldest art museums in the world, based on art collected by the Swedish royal family. In particular, the museum's drawing collection is known for its rich quality and quantity, even on a global scale. This time, we will hold an exhibition that introduces a selection of masterpieces from the drawing collection, from the Renaissance to the Baroque. Since drawings are easily affected by changes in the environment, light, and vibration, it is usually difficult to exhibit drawings held overseas in Japan, so this will be the first time that the world's best collection of drawings, about 80 pieces, will come to Japan. This exhibition allows you to fully enjoy the charm of drawings, which are filled with all of the artist's skill and imagination, including works by masters such as Dürer, Rubens, and Rembrandt.

Japanese Contemporary Art and the World 1989-2010 (working title) | The National Art Center, Tokyo

Sep 3–Dec 8, 2025 (UTC+9)
Tokyo
Exhibitions
This exhibition is the first curatorial collaboration between the National Art Center, Tokyo and M+. It presents a historical survey of Japanese contemporary art between 1989 and 2010, bracketed by two major events in Japan’s recent past: the end of the Shōwa era (1926–1989) and the beginning of the Heisei period (1989–2019), and the Tōhoku Earthquake in 2011.The exhibition traces a trajectory of contemporary art in Japan beyond national and territorial frameworks, evolving through a rich array of international exchanges. Structured as two intertwined strands of iconic works of art and stories of lesser-known projects by artists during this period, the exhibition features Japanese artists living inside and outside their native country alongside works by international artists. It paints a picture of Japanese contemporary art as a complex, porous network of cultural dialogue and engagement, providing an alternative view to the established narrative of national singularity. The exhibition shows how Japanese contemporary art during this critical transitionary period examined and tackled major subjects, such as the nation's historical legacy and multiplicity of identities, while proposing possibilities of alternative communities. It also underscores the wide influence of Japanese art and visual culture in the first two decades of contemporary globalisation.

「HOKUSAI IN BLOOM」 | art cruise gallery by Baycrew's

Apr 17–Jun 8, 2025 (UTC+9)
Tokyo
Exhibitions
The theme of this exhibition is "BLOOM=咲く". 65 works by Katsushika Hokusai with "flowers" as the theme are selected from "Hokusai Manga" and constructed together with the special exhibition works. Flowers, as a symbol of "beauty" and "ideal", sometimes also carry "impermanence" and "reverence". They have long been used by countless artists as a medium for expression and thinking. So, how do these flowers appear in the eyes of Hokusai? This is the first time in about a year that "art cruise gallery" has held an exhibition of Katsushika Hokusai. Even viewers who have visited the exhibition "PLAY W/HOKUSAI" can rediscover Hokusai's new charm in this exhibition. In the spring when nature awakens and colorful flowers bloom in the fields and cities, let's enjoy the natural scenery and Edo street scenes that Hokusai depicts with delicate and humorous brushstrokes, which unfold around flowers.

Exhibitions
Naofumi Maruyama begins painting by placing a cotton cloth, saturated with water, on the floor. Utilizing the effect of pigments spreading and seeping into the fabric through the water, he has created numerous landscapes where the boundaries of objects dissolve ambiguously. Unlike applying layers of paint onto a firm and solid support, his process involves gradually generating colors and forms on a damp surface, much like a wetland. This approach resonates with the reality of our own existence, as we stand and live on unstable, physically shifting ground.

Many tourists come to this festival every year. The Western-style garden has about 100 varieties and 200 roses, which form a beautiful harmony with the stately Western-style building designed by Josiah Kant during the Taisho era. He honed his craft for joke writing in the London comedy circuit where he lived until 2020. In that same year, he left the bubble of UK politics and instead opted to live his life on the road and tour his self-produced shows all over the European continent. Since then, Victor has travelled to corners of the world, of which some he has been the first comedian to perform in English. He has told jokes in Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Turkey, Sweden, France, Serbia, Switzerland, Finland, Belgium, Iceland, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Gibraltar, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia, Croatia, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, United Arab Emirates, Bulgaria, Hungary, Ukraine and even Denmark. In 2023 alone, Victor performed in front of more than 20’000 people across 70 cities, 32 countries and 2 continents. Consequently, he has a legitimate claim for having the longest and most extensive self-produced comedy show in Europe. Victor weaves this unique experience into his stand up as he has become somewhat of a sponge absorbing the intricacies of European culture and politics. His style is distinctly shaped by his peculiar life as a vagabond. While he jokes about the stereotypes and misconceptions of every country, he also highlights the silliness of our presumed differences in an effort to assert our sameness. Summer Passing Great Festival - Tsukiji Lion Festival | Tokyo

Jun 10–Jun 15, 2025 (UTC+9)
Tokyo
Celebration
Hamitsuki Inari Shrine is famous for praying for protection from disasters, prosperity of business, and safety of buildings. Reclamation of the sea southeast of Edo began long before the founding of Edo (1603), but whenever the embankment was built, it was washed away, which was a big challenge for Tsukiji Market. However, one night, when people held a worship ceremony for the gods who appeared on the sea, the waves stopped and the building was completed in 1659 (Manji 2). The Tsukiji Lion Festival is said to have originated from the lion heads that people carry with them, a dragon that controls the clouds, a tiger that controls the wind, and a lion that can scare all living things with just a roar.
