Typist Artist Pirate King - 12a film screening - Barnstaple Library | Barnstaple Library

Feb 24, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Barnstaple
Arts
Join the captivating journey of two women embarking on a road trip in an electric car, seeking closure and reconciliation. Immerse yourself in the compelling narrative of Typist Artist Pirate King, a remarkable British film set to be released in 2022. Written and directed by the talented Carol Morley, this cinematic masterpiece features an exceptional cast including Monica Dolan, Kelly Macdonald, and Gina McKee. Typist Artist Pirate King draws inspiration from the intriguing life of Audrey Amiss, an avant-garde artist who faced both misunderstanding and admiration. While studying at the esteemed Royal Academy of Arts, Amiss's artistic pursuits were tragically interrupted by her battle with mental illness. In 2013, she passed away, leaving behind an extensive collection of artwork and writings. These precious creations were discovered posthumously and generously donated to the renowned Wellcome Collection. Situated on 183 Euston Road in London, Wellcome Collection showcases an extraordinary blend of medical artifacts and original artworks, exploring the profound intersection of medicine, life, and art. In this thought-provoking film, the title, Typist Artist Pirate King, stems from Amiss's passport, where she boldly listed her occupation as a typist, artist, and pirate king. The narrative takes us on an imaginary road trip alongside Amiss and her devoted psychiatric nurse, allowing us to revisit significant moments and reconnect with key individuals from Amiss's past. The Guardian hails this film as "warm and sympathetic," skillfully blending dark humor and tragicomic elements, resulting in a truly unforgettable cinematic experience. Be part of the Typist Artist Pirate King screening at Barnstaple Library on 24th February 2024. Discover the power of storytelling as you delve into this 12a-rated film. Doors open at 13:45, and refreshments will be available. The film will commence at 14:00, with an approximate duration of 1 hour and 45 minutes. Following the screening, an informal audience discussion will provide an opportunity for reflection and conversation. Secure your ticket now for just £3.96 and prepare to be captivated by this extraordinary cinematic journey.

Artist statements are a necessary tool for every artist; whether applying to open calls, writing exhibition proposals, putting together text for an exhibition hand-out, or including information on your website about you. An artist statement lets people know what your work is about, and can even be a useful thing to refer back to when you’re researching new projects or sketching out new ideas. However, they can be the thorn in every artist’s side and it can be hard to condense lots of ideas into a few sentences. In this workshop we’re going to think about different formats for artist statements, explore different ways to get our ideas down on paper, and get over that dreaded writer’s block. Most importantly, we’re going to think of fun ways to share ideas about our work so that artist statements aren’t always such a drag. The workshop is open to people working in all mediums and at all stages of their artistic journey, whether you’ve been making art for 30 years or 30 days. If you have a current artist statement you'd like feedback on, you're welcome to bring something along with you. There will be no pressure to share anything with the group, and we’ll keep numbers limited. Laura Porter, founding director of Studio KIND, is a sculptor and curator based between North Devon and South London, having graduated from UAL with an MA in Sculpture. Laura has exhibited extensively across the country, and has had a solo exhibition at The Plough Arts Centre and was in the 2016 Broomhill National Sculpture Prize. In 2021 she led the British Council funded project ‘Reciprocal Space’, and has been awarded the a-n Time, Space, Money funding. We are now offering 15% discount for students!
