Handmade Printed Cards workshop, with Cath Brooke | Salts Works

Dec 8, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Shipley
Arts
Join the Handmade Printed Cards workshop with Cath Brooke in Shipley at Salts Works on December 8, 2024. In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to create up to 10 unique hand-printed cards using polystyrene 'quickprint' blocks and a variety of colors. Quickprint allows for a similar effect to linocuts, where designs are drawn into polystyrene plates. Attendees can choose to make one, two, or three color prints based on their design preferences. Participants are encouraged to bring a design idea, whether Christmas-themed or not, although a selection of images will be provided by Cath. It is recommended to wear old clothes or bring an apron as printmaking can be messy. Cath Brooke, an experienced printmaker with a background in community arts projects, will guide the workshop. All proceeds from this event will go towards supporting the People Powered Press' initiatives with community groups in the Bradford district. Don't miss this opportunity to explore the art of printmaking and contribute to a meaningful cause.

Letterpress Printing on the People Powered Press, with Oli Bentley | Salts Works

May 10, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Shipley
Arts
Fashion Design
Letterpress printing, invented in the 15th century, sparked a revolution in the distribution of the printed word and thereby the rapid growth of literacy among common people. Try your hand at this most important of artforms on the largest letterpress printing press of its kind in the world. Using our wide range of traditional wooden letters – some collected and some donated to the People Powered Press – and the giant steel letters of our own typeface, Graft, you’ll design and set your words in the bed of the press, ink them up, and use them to make and perfect your giant print which you can take away. Learn all the skills and terminology of letterpress printing, and enjoy the unique thrill of peeling back the paper to see the prints that you’ve created yourself. Your tutor

Oli Bentley has worked as a graphic designer since he set up Split whilst a music student in 2007, opening the studio of the same name 3 years later. He works extensively in the music, arts and non-profit sectors, also creating self initiated work as a designer/graphic artist, letterpress printer and type designer. Oli is the founder of the press – born from his award-winning exhibition and book, These Northern Types – and designed its large steel typeface, Graft. More recently he has created the Brico type system in collaboration with Anthony Burrill and Thomas Mayo – created to work with community groups on large-scale murals and so that anyone might share in the joy of type designing at a massive scale. What to expect

You’ll work in a team of five, including Oli, for three hours. Couples can attend to make one print together, or to make a matching pair; two tickets would be needed. Each of you will make a print of your own design, and help the others set and print their own designs too. Working on the People Powered Press can’t be rushed – it’s a leisurely, creative process that brings people together, always provoking really interesting conversation while you’re making your print. You’ll set the individual letters – weighing in at around 2kg each – in the bed of the press and learn how to space them and lock them in place, then ink them up and use them to create your giant print. You’ll also get to hear the whole strange tale behind the creation of the People Powered Press – designed to amplify local voices and spread words worth spreading as part of Split’s 2018 project, These Northern Types – and its accidental world record. What to bring with you Clothes that you wouldn’t mind getting a little bit dirty, though we'll provide you with a fetching apron. If you have long hair, please bring something you can use to tie it back, and don’t wear anything too flowy, especially baggy sleeves, to avoid getting trapped in the press’s roller or dangling in the ink. Price includes refreshments and a free, limited edition visual booklet telling the story of the People Powered Press and the creation of our own steel typeface, Graft. _________ All proceeds from this workshop will be used to support the People Powered Press' work with community groups around the Bradford district, amplifying local voices and spreading words worth spreading. Whether you are new to peer support or looking to refresh your knowledge, this training is perfect for you. The attendees are also given the opportunity to look at the sharing of their own lived experience and to learn a framework/guidelines in which to do this. This can prepare the worker for safe and appropriate self-disclosure within the Peer Support Worker/Client relationship. The course finishes by looking at the important issue of self-care and reflection to prepare the worker with the essential tools to preserve their own wellbeing. Don't miss this opportunity to connect with peers, share experiences, and learn valuable skills to support others. Sign up now and take your peer support abilities to the next level! Accreditation Certificate: We are delighted to be able to offer this Level 3 Accredited (by OCN Learning) Course in Peer Support Work. The course has been structured around some set learning objectives and in order to ‘assess’ for these we have set some activities within the training via interactive discussions around the subject content. We aim to be as supportive and as inclusive as possible and pledge to provide a non-judgemental learning environment with a variety of ways in which to contribute and meet these objectives. If an attendee does not wish to participate in these activities they are welcome to still attend this training but it will not be possible for them to achieve the accreditation certificate. We are happy instead to provide a ‘letter of attendance’ on request to such participants. Flexibility: We recognise that attendees will have a variety of competing time commitments and are happy to provide flexibility to help participants complete this training. If one or two sections are missed within the two day training then we are happy to send over training slides afterwards and allow attendees to complete activities retrospectively. If more than a quarter of the two day content is missed however then this would not be realistic and the participant would need to rebook on the training to complete the course (see below for cancellation policy). Cancellation Policy: If for any reason attendees wish to re-schedule their training dates, they must notify The Cellar Trust of a cancellation at least 72 hours before the training is due to start. Should any re-scheduled dates also require cancellation, The Cellar Trust cannot guarantee that any further dates will be provided to individuals. There will also be additional cancellation costs passed on to individuals who have booked through Eventbrite. Should we not receive such notice then re-bookings would need to be made at the additional cost of each participant. The Cellar Trust reserve the right to cancel at our discretion. Please note : Please check your 'junk/spam' folder in case any of our correspondence has arrived in to this folder. The training will be held in the annex, a brown building, next to our old premises on Farfield Road, Shipley BD18 4QP. Space Trash #2: La Rissa, INVADR, Geraldine Snell, Gilank Space Trash returns to The Triangle with another night exploring the outer reaches of synthpop, ambient and darkwave. La Rissa Tipped as ones to watch by Amazing Radio and BBC Introducing, La Rissa are a dark-wave duo making post-punk synth pop in a dim little attic in West Yorkshire. Think of a cold-wave Lana Del Rey fronting Depeche Mode covering a Joy Division album co-written by Zola Jesus and you’re on the right path. Winners of the Bradford Music Scene’s 2025 best band award La Rissa have been featured on BBC 6 Music and Huw Stephens' BBC Radio 1 show, BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio. INVADR INVADR is the solo project of electronic musician Matt Garland. As well as combining the best parts of synthpop and electro, Matt brings a glorious set of visuals which will keep you captivated throughout. Geraldine Snell Mesmerising, melodic, and melancholic, Geraldine's tender electronic dream-pop is often compared to the likes of Cocteau Twins, Portishead, and Julee Cruise. Crafted from looped and sampled keys, vocals, and textures, Geraldine will perform a unique set featuring songs from her third album "overlove" as well as more improvised medleys. Gilank Gilank are a Bradford-based experimental electro-acoustic duo consisting of Alice Gilmour and Shi Blank. They combine loopers, pedals, synths, MIDI controllers, and acoustic instruments to create a unique and dynamic sound. Their sets are fluid, and spontaneous, with each response shaping the evolving composition as they build upon each other's input. Information Source: Northern Freeze Records | eventbrite
