Edward Said and Political Theory Jeanne Morefield are coming together to discuss a highly anticipated event titled "Seeing Through Exile: Edward Said and Political Theory." This event will take place on March 13, 2024, at the Manchester Metropolitan University Geoffrey Manton Building Room 227 in Manchester. The theme of this event revolves around Jeanne Morefield's book, "Unsettling the World," which offers a unique perspective on Edward Said's influential cultural criticism from a political theorist's point of view. "Unsettling the World" is the very first book-length analysis of Edward Said's thought, exploring his writings on various subjects such as exile, contrapuntal criticism, and worldly humanism. Jeanne Morefield argues that Said's critical vision extends far beyond Orientalism and presents a fresh perspective on subjectivity, global justice, identity, and the history of political thought. Moreover, she emphasizes that Said's approach provides a valuable model for applying insights gained from historical analyses of imperialism and anti-colonialism to critique contemporary global crises and American foreign policy. Jeanne Morefield, an esteemed Associate Professor of Political Theory at the University of Oxford, will be sharing her expertise and insights during the event. Her scholarly work touches on the intersections between political theory, international relations, and intellectual history, focusing on liberalism, imperialism, and internationalism in Britain and America. She has authored notable books like "Covenants Without Swords" and "Empires Without Imperialism" and has contributed to publications such as The Boston Review, Jacobin, Responsible Statecraft, and The New Statesman. As a visitor, you are invited to attend this enlightening discussion where Edward Said's legacy and his impact on political theory will be thoroughly examined. Please note that the event is free of charge, and refreshments will be available prior to the talk.
