Paul Hawken | Kepler's Books

A journey into the world of carbon, the most versatile element on the planet, by the New York Times bestselling author Paul Hawken Carbon is the only element that animates the entirety of the living world. Though comprising a tiny fraction of Earth’s composition, our planet is lifeless without it. Yet it is maligned as the driver of climate change, scorned as an errant element blamed for the possible demise of civilization. Here, Paul Hawken looks at the flow of life through the lens of carbon. Embracing a panoramic view of carbon’s omnipresence, he explores how this ubiquitous and essential element extends into every aperture of existence and shapes the entire fabric of life. Hawken charts a course across our planetary history, guiding us into the realms of plants, animals, insects, fungi, food, and farms to offer a new narrative for embracing carbon’s life-giving power and its possibilities for the future of human endeavor. In this stirring, hopeful, and deeply humane book, Hawken illuminates the subtle connections between carbon and our collective human experience and asks us to see nature, carbon, and ourselves as exquisitely intertwined—inseparably connected. About the Author PaulHawken is a bestselling author and leading voice calling for the regeneration of nature and humanity. He has authored nine books published in thirty languages, including The Ecology of Commerce, Blessed Unrest, and Regeneration. Founder of projects Drawdown and Regeneration, he is a renowned lecturer who consults with NGOs, governments, and corporations worldwide. He and his wife live in the Cascade Creek watershed in Northern California with coyotes, foxes, bobcats, ravens, flocks of nuthatches, red-tailed hawks, and pileated woodpeckers. Malcolm Harris | Kepler's Books
Apr 19, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Camino
A vital guide for collective political action against the climate apocalypse, from bestselling progressive intellectual Malcolm Harris—“a brilliant thinker and writer capable of making the intricacies of economic conditions supremely readable” (Vulture).
Climate change is the unifying crisis of our time. But the scale of the problem can be paralyzing, especially when corporations are actively staving off changes that could save the planet but which might threaten their bottom lines. To quote Greta Thunberg, despite very clear science and very real devastation, the adults at the table are still saying “blah blah blah.” Something has to change—but what, and how?
In What's Left, Malcolm Harris cuts through the noise and gets real about our remaining options for saving the world. Just as humans have caused climate change, we hold the power to avert a climate apocalypse, but that will only happen through collective political action. Harris outlines the three strategies—progressive, socialist, and revolutionary—that have any chance of succeeding, while also revealing that none of them can succeed on their own. What's Left shows how we must combine them into a single pathway: a meta-strategy, one that will ensure we can move forward together rather than squabbling over potential solutions while the world burns.
Vital and transformative, What's Left confirms Malcolm Harris as next-generation David Graeber or Mike Davis—a historian-activist who shows us where we stand and how we got here, while also blazing a path toward a brighter future. About the Author Malcolm Harrisis the author of the national bestsellerPalo Alto: A History of California, Capitalism, and the World,a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize;Kids These Days: The Making of Millennials; and Shit is Fucked Up and Bullshit: History Since the End of History. He was born in Santa Cruz, CA and graduated from the University of Maryland. COVID SAFETY PROTOCOLS: We strongly encourage attendees to wear masks at our events, although they will NOT be required. Benjamin Yalom with Doug Dorst | Kepler's Books
May 7, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Camino
Psychotherapist Benjamin Yalom joins us to discuss Hour of the Heart, the memoir written in collaboration with his father and one of the most prominent psychotherapists of our time, Irvin D. Yalom.Hour of the Heart shows us how to relate to each other better in the moment, with more honesty and vulnerability. That hour of connection, occurring during a time of isolation and grief for so many, helped to sustain both patient and therapist, and enriched Yalom’s vision of what psychotherapy can do. Facing memory loss at age ninety-three as well as the fallout from a global pandemic that moved much of daily life online, legendary psychotherapist and bestselling author Irvin Yalom was forced to vastly reconsider the shape of his sessions with patients. Rather than throw in the towel in the face of change, Dr. Yalom considered head-on the limitations imposed by these new realities and revolutionized his practice. Turning his focus to what might be achieved in a one-hour, one-time-only meeting between patient and practitioner, Dr. Yalom employed an even more concerted use of his “here and now” approach. In Hour of the Heart, Yalom recounts some of these intense, life-changing sessions, exploring an array of human predicaments and his own late-career development as a therapist. In recounting these consultations, he shows how a therapist’s willingness to be open helps patients let down their own guards, leading to a deeper and more immediate connection—one necessary to achieving profound realizations in just sixty minutes. This vulnerability led Yalom to disclose details about his personal life that he might previously have kept hidden from patients, including his traumatic childhood in Washington, DC, the evolution of his thinking about philosophy and psychotherapy, and the recent death of his wife, Dr. Marilyn Yalom. Throughout, he pushes the boundaries of self-revelation as a therapeutic tool. Benjamin Yalom will be in conversation with author Doug Dorst. About the Authors
Benjamin Yalom is a psychotherapist, creative coach, theater maker, and writer. His therapy and coaching focus on understanding and aligning one’s values with one’s living, and unlocking creative approaches to work and life. He is a longtime writing collaborator with his father, Irvin D. Yalom. Prior to his current doctoral studies in Marriage and Family Therapy, Ben was the visionary force behind foolsFURY Theater, which helped transform San Francisco’s performing arts scene in the early 2000s. He is also an award-winning fiction writer and holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. He lives with his wife, Dr. Anisa Yalom, and their three children in San Diego. Doug Dorst is the author of the New York Times-bestselling novel S. (acollaboration with filmmaker J.J. Abrams) and two other works of fiction: Alive in Necropolis (San Francisco’s 2009 One City One Book selection) and The Surf Guru: Stories. In one of their many shared artistic endeavors, he and Benjamin Yalom co-created foolsFURY Theater’s acclaimed play Monster in the Dark. Doug is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and a former Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford. He currently teaches creative writing at Texas State University. Philosophy Talk live! with guest Peter Godfrey-Smith | Kepler's Books
Nov 12, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Camino
If the history of the Earth were compressed down to a year, our species would arise in the last thirty minutes or so of the final hour. But life itself is not such a late arrival: it has existed on Earth for something like 3.7 billion years, covering most of our planet’s history and over a quarter of the age of the universe. What have these organisms—bacteria, animals, plants, and the rest—done in all this time? In Living on Earth, the philosopher Peter Godfrey-Smith proposes a new way of understanding how the actions of living beings have shaped our planet. Where his acclaimed books Other Minds and Metazoa explored the riddle of how conscious minds came to exist on Earth, Living on Earth turns to what happens when we look at the mind from another side—when we come to see organisms as active causes, not merely as results of the evolutionary process. The planet we inhabit is significantly the work of living beings, who shaped the environments that we ourselves later transformed. To that end, Godfrey-Smith takes us on a grand tour of the history of life on earth. He visits Rwandan gorillas and Australian bowerbirds, coral reefs and octopus dens. He considers the impact of language and writing, and weighs the responsibilities our unique powers bring with them as they relate to factory farming, habitat preservation, climate change, and the use of animals in experiments. Ranging from the seas to the forests, and from animate matter’s first appearance to its future extinction, Godfrey-Smith offers a novel picture of the course of life on Earth and how we might meet the challenges of our time, the Anthropocene. About the Speakers Peter Godfrey-Smith is the author of the bestselling Other Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness, which has been published in more than twenty languages, and Metazoa: Animal Life and the Birth of the Mind. His other books include Theory and Reality: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Science and Darwinian Populations and Natural Selection, which won the 2010 Lakatos Award. He is a professor in the School of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Sydney. Josh Landy is the Andrew B. Hammond Professor of French, Professor of Comparative Literature, and co-director of the Literature and Philosophy Initiative at Stanford University. He is also director of Stanford’s Structured Liberal Education program. His research focuses on the intersection of philosophy and literature. Among many other publications, he is the author of Philosophy as Fiction: Self, Deception, and Knowledge in Proust and How to Do Things with Fictions. COVID SAFETY PROTOCOLS: We strongly encourage attendees to wear masks at our events, although they will NOT be required. We will have masks available for attendees who want them. Pico Iyer with Angie Coiro | Kepler's Books
Jan 14, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Camino
Pico Iyer has made more than one hundred retreats over the past three decades to a small Benedictine hermitage high above the sea in Big Sur, California. He’s not a Christian—or a member of any religious group—but his life has been transformed by these periods of time spent in silence. That silence reminds him of what is essential and awakens a joy that nothing can efface. It’s not just freedom from distraction and noise and rush: it’s a reminder of some deeper truths he misplaced along the way. In his new book, Aflame, Iyer connects with inner stillness and joy in his many seasons at the monastery, even as his life is going through constant change: a house burns down, a parent dies, a daughter is diagnosed with cancer. He shares the revelations he experiences, alongside wisdom from other laypeople who have learned from adversity and inwardness. And most profoundly, he shows how solitude can be a training in community and companionship. In so doing, he offers a unique outsider’s view of monastic life—and of a group of selfless souls who have dedicated their days to ensuring there’s a space for quiet and recollection that’s open to us all. Our events with Pico Iyer always sell out and leave audiences struck by wonder. Join Kepler’s host Angie Coiro for what is sure to be a deeply moving conversation. About the Author Pico Iyer is the acclaimed and bestselling author of more than a dozen books translated into twenty-three languages, most recently the nationally bestselling The Half Known Life: In Search of Paradise, which was named a New York Times Top 100 book and a Time magazine best book of 2023. His journalism regularly appears in The New York Times, The Financial Times, Harper’s and more than 250 other periodicals worldwide. His four TED Talks have received more than eleven million views. The stakes for trans people are at an all-time high. For readers of Pachinko and Queenie, a funny, sexy, and heart-wrenching literary debut that explores exile, ambition, and hope across three generations of Palestinian American women.
Arabella, a New York director whose dating and career prospects are drying up, is offered an opportunity to direct a risqué cross-dressing interpretation of a Shakespeare classic in the West Bank. Her grandmother, Zoya, plots to make a match between her and Aziz, a Palestinian American doctor volunteering in Gaza. Arabella agrees to meet Aziz since her growing feelings for Yoav, a celebrated Israeli American theater designer, seem destined for disaster. Arabella and Aziz’s instant connection reminds Zoya of the passion she once felt for Aziz’s grandfather, a man she desired even after her father arranged another husband for her. In turn, Zoya would later marry off her youngest daughter, Naya, who aspired to date the Jackson 5 and wasn’t ready to be a wife or mother to Arabella at sixteen. Now that Naya’s children are grown and she’s arrived at an abrupt midlife crossroads, it’s time to settle old scores…. Zoya is playing matchmaker for her last unmarried granddaughter—introducing Arabella to the very eligible grandson of an old flame and stirring up buried family history. Arabella gets an unexpected chance at love when she’s thrust into a conflict she’s tried to avoid all her life. Naya is keeping a secret from her family that will change all their lives. With biting hilarity, Too Soon introduces us to a trio of bold and unforgettable voices. This dramatic saga follows one family’s epic journey from fleeing war-torn Jaffa in 1948, chasing the American Dream in Detroit and San Francisco in the sixties and seventies, hustling in the New York theater scene post-9/11, and daring to stage a show in Palestine in 2012. Upon learning one of them is living on borrowed time, three women fight to live, make art, and love on their own terms. Too Soon joins the stories that seek to illuminate our shared history and ask: how can we set ourselves free? About the Author Betty Shamieh is a Palestinian American writer and the author of fifteen plays. She is the playwright-in-residence at the Classical Theatre of Harlem. Her six New York play premieres include the sold-out off-Broadway runs of Roar and Malvolio, a sequel to Twelfth Night, which were both New York Times Critics Picks. Shamieh was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and named a UNESCO Young Artist for Intercultural Dialogue. She is a founding artistic director of The Semitic Root, a collective that supports innovative theater co-created by Arab and Jewish Americans. A graduate of Harvard College and the Yale School of Drama, she lives with her family in San Francisco. Allison Saft returns to Kepler's for Wings of Starlight, a sweeping, star-crossed romance between the queen of Pixie Hollow and the lord of the Winter Woods. It’s been centuries since a warm seasons’ fairy in Pixie Hollow has crossed into the Winter Woods, and while most fear the legends of monsters lurking in the winter lands, Clarion, can’t help but be intrigued by Winter’s stoic beauty. But under the watchful eyes of the current monarch and the court-ministers, Clarion has little time to dwell on daydreams while the days to her coronation dwindle away.
That is until reports of a monster crossing from Winter into Spring makes its way to the palace. Clarion sees defeating this threat as an opportunity to prove that she is worthy of her new role. But instead of finding a monster at the edge of Winter, she finds Milori, a young guardian of the Winter Woods. Together, they form an unlikely bond as they race to save their lands.
But as their alliance warms to something more, they will discover there is a reason a warm seasons’ fairy and a winter fairy are forbidden to be together. And the cost could be just as deadly as the monsters that prowl the Winter Woods. A Subversive's Guide to Improv: Masterclass with Dave Razowsky | 2525 Camino del Rio S suite 160

A Subversive's Guide to Improv: Masterclass with Dave Razowsky Whether you’re a seasoned improviser, an improv “newbie,” or an actor who’s shied away from improvisation because you felt you weren’t clever enough, A Subversive’s Masterclass is for you. The challenge for most improvisers is trying to stick to “the rules” and believing “Yes, and” is the magic formula for a successful scene. Characters meander and never find their footing. In an instant, you travel from a state of fluidity to a mess of frustration and ask yourself, “How did I go wrong?” or “Now what?” A Subversive’s Masterclass highlights methods and exercises in his best-seller, A Subversive’s Guide to Improvisation. This workshop will teach you to connect to your partner and the scene without worrying about the rules and responding with a “yes, and” after every line. This full-day intensive includes: Finding Focus - What are you focused on when you begin a scene? What great offers are you missing because you’re building a story instead of a relationship? Learn how paying attention to your heart and breath leads to strong scenes and surprising dynamics. PinpointingPoint of View - It’s the bedrock of every relationship. You state your point of view, and your partner says theirs. Sounds easy, right? But how often are scenes derailed because the actors don’t hold onto their points of view or mindlessly add unnecessary details that throw the scene off course? Recognizing, maintaining, and evolving a point of view creates confident and exciting scenes. Exploring Spatial Relationship - If you don’t move, neither do your scenes. The dynamics between you and your partner are defined not just by your dialogue but by where you are on stage when you’re speaking. Learn how physical distance conveys strong points of view, status, and dramatic relationships. A Subversive’s Masterclass builds on Razowsky’s methodology of mindfulness, emotional awareness, kinesthetic responses, and truthfulness to create profound and surprising scenes. Prepare to be changed.

Kevin Fagan’s The Lost and the Found, set in San Francisco—one of the wealthiest cities in America—explores the human side of what’s behind the homelessness epidemic with deep understanding and empathy.
An award-winning journalist and Pulitzer Prize nominee who has covered homelessness for decades and spent extensive time on the streets for his reporting, Fagan experienced it himself as a young man. He introduces us to Rita and Tyson, telling the deeply moving story of two unhoused people rescued by their families with the help of Fagan’s reporting, and their struggle to pull themselves out of homelessness and addiction, ending with both enormous tragedy and triumph.
But The Lost and the Found is not just a story of individuals experiencing homelessness, it is also a compelling look at the link between homelessness and addiction, and an incisive commentary on housing and equality. Fagan shines a sharp light on this national calamity, and in sharing Rita and Tyson’s stories, The Lost and the Found has the potential to change the way we see and help the homeless. Join Angie Coiro as we investigate beyond the headlines. About the Author Kevin Fagan is a longtime, award-winning reporter at the San Francisco Chronicle. He has been nominated several times for the Pulitzer Prize, and won the James Aronson Award for Social Justice in Journalism and the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship at Stanford University. During his career, he has covered homelessness, the 9/11 terror attacks, serial killers, California’s wildfires, and much more.
