Join us to hear from internationally renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr David Sandberg whose new book Brain and Heart is a warm and brilliant memoir that captures the medical and emotional intensity of pediatric neurosurgery. In this moving, unflinching, and inspiring book, Sandberg combines his deep scientific and medical knowledge with raw emotion and unforgettably powerful stories of courage and love. The brain is the most complicated and perplexing of our organs, and it is also the one that makes us human. When it comes to a child's brain, the hearts of those who love them become inextricably linked to that story. In Brain and Heart, Dr. Sandberg describes the joy, heartbreak, uncertainty, and physical and emotional challenges that come with performing brain surgery on children. What makes this book different from previously published medical memoirs is Dr. Sandberg’s unique honesty about what goes through his mind when he makes the most complex choices with life-changing consequences. While most medical memoirs focus largely on the patient perspective, Dr. Sandberg allows readers access to his private thoughts when making agonizing decisions—from giving the worst news imaginable to facing very scary surgical complications. A father himself, Dr. Sandberg understands deeply how every one of his patients is an entire world, and his devotion to his patients and his work shines through on every page. We follow him as he finds his way to neurosurgery as a young doctor through to his most heartbreaking cases and greatest triumphs. We also travel with him to underserved countries, where lifesaving surgeries that are common here are almost nonexistent, and Dr. Sandberg shares the stories of the dedicated doctors and surgeons trying to enact change. Brain and Heart is an unforgettable book that will strengthen our sense of compassion and hope. About the Author David I. Sandberg,MD, FACS, FAAP, is a fellowship-trained pediatric neurosurgeon who is the director of pediatric neurosurgery at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). He has a special clinical and research interest in pediatric brain tumors, and specializes in minimally invasive endoscopic approaches to brain tumors, hydrocephalus and arachnoid cysts, as well as surgical management of arteriovenous malformations of the brain, congenital spinal anomalies, spasticity and craniofacial anomalies. The recipient of numerous research grants, he has pioneered novel treatment approaches for pediatric brain tumors, and he is principal investigator of several clinical trials. A graduate of Harvard University, Dr. Sandberg received his medical degree at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. About the Moderator Sheryl Sandberg is the founder and chair of the Sandberg Goldberg Bernthal Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to build a more equal and resilient world through three key initiatives: Lean In, Option B, and the Dave Goldberg Scholarship Program. Launched in 2013, LeanIn.org supports a global community of over 100,000 Lean In Circles in 183 countries. Sheryl is also the co-founder of Sandberg Bernthal Venture Partners (SBVP), an early stage venture fund deploying private capital to fund innovation across consumer, enterprise, climate, and healthcare technology. Sheryl previously served as chief operating officer at Meta for fourteen years, during which the company grew from $150 million to over $110 billion in annual revenue and implemented industry-defining benefits and programs to make the workplace more inclusive. Before joining the company then called Facebook, Sheryl was vice president of global online sales and operations at Google, chief of staff for the U.S. Treasury Department under President Clinton, a consultant with McKinsey & Company, and an economist with the World Bank. She serves on the boards of the Bay Football Club and Terradot. Teacher, advocate, and New York Timesbestselling author Chasten Buttigieg joins us to share his charming picture book about unconditional love. Papa’s Coming Home was inspired after Chasten and his husband welcomed newborn twins and began searching for books with families that looked like theirs but came up short. Chasten Buttigieg, husband of former presidential candidate and US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, says, “This story came from a desire to see a family that looks like our own on the pages of a picture book and follows a day full of excitement and hijinks that many families will relate to.” Jojo and Rosie’s papa has been away on a trip, and they can’t wait to welcome him home! They make signs, they pick flowers, and with Daddy’s help, they bake a cake and pack the car with absolutely everything Papa might have missed while he was away. When Papa’s plane arrives, they give him a huge hug—but when they bring him to the car, they realize there’s one small problem: Where will Papa sit? Delightfully illustrated by Dan Taylor, this charming story filled with love celebrates dads and familial bonds. Chasten Buttigieg shines a beautiful light on the humorous musings of toddlers and a parent’s unconditional love for their child. In a time of increasing book bans and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, it’s crucial for all types of families to feel supported and celebrated and for allies to have the tools like this story to raise the next generation of empathetic, inclusive citizens. We hope you will join us for a magnificent evening with Chasten Buttigieg. About the Author Chasten Glezman Buttigieggrew up in Northern Michigan. He is a teacher, advocate, and husband of former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg. Chasten currently lives with Pete; their two children, Gus and Penelope; and their rescue dog, Buddy, in Traverse City, Michigan. His memoir I Have Something to Tell You was a New York Times bestseller, in both the adult and young adult editions. Program 6:30pm - Drinks Reception 7:00pm - Program Begins Lyrical, thought-provoking prose . . . .This sterling portrait of a complex woman stands head and shoulders above most contemporary WWII fiction.— Publisher's Weekly (starred review). Set in Carmel-by-the-Sea and Hollywood Meg Waite Clayton's new novel, Typewriter Beach, is an unforgettable story of the unlikely friendship between an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and a young actress hoping to be Alfred Hitchcock's new star. 1957. Isabella Giori is ten months into a standard seven-year studio contract when she auditions with Hitchcock. Just weeks later, she is sequestered by the studio’s “fixer” in a tiny Carmel cottage, waiting and dreading. Meanwhile, next door, Léon Chazan is annoyed as hell when Iz interrupts his work on yet another screenplay he won’t be able to sell, because he’s been blacklisted. Soon, they’re together in his roadster, speeding down the fog-shrouded Big Sur coast. 2018. Twenty-six-year-old screenwriter Gemma Chazan, in Carmel to sell her grandfather’s cottage, finds a hidden safe full of secrets—raising questions about who the screenwriter known simply as Chazan really was, and whether she can live up to his name. In graceful prose and with an intimate understanding of human nature, Meg Waite Clayton captures the joys and frustrations of being a writer, being a woman, being a star, and being in love. Typewriter Beach is the story of two women separated by generations—a tale of ideas and ideals, passion and persistence, creativity, politics, and family. Meg Waite Clayton will be in conversation with Yangsze Choo. About the Author New York Times bestseller and book club favorite Meg Waite Clayton is the author of nine novels, including the forthcoming international bestsellers The Postmistress of Paris, The Last Train to London and The Wednesday Sisters. Her books have been published in 24 languages. Clayton's screenplay for The Last Train to London was chosen for the prestigious Meryl Streep- and Nicole Kidman-sponsored The Writers Lab. She divides her time between California and Connecticut. About the Moderator Yangsze Choo is the New York Times bestselling author of The Ghost Bride (now a Netflix original series); The Night Tiger, a Reese’s Book Club Pick, and a Big Jubilee Read selection for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee; and The Fox Wife. She lives in California with her family and loves to eat and read (often at the same time). The Fox Wife and all previous novels would not have been possible without large quantities of dark chocolate. The bestselling author of Your Inner Fish takes readers on an epic adventure to the North and South Poles to reveal the secrets locked in the ice about life, the cosmos, and our planet’s future. Renowned scientist Neil Shubin has made extraordinary discoveries by leading scientific expeditions to the sweeping ice landscapes of the Arctic and Antarctic. He’s survived polar storms, traveled in temperatures that can freeze flesh in seconds, and worked hundreds of miles from the nearest humans, all to deepen our understanding of our world. Written with infectious enthusiasm and irresistible curiosity, Ends of the Earthblends travel writing, science, and history in a book brimming with surprising and wonderful discoveries. Shubin retraces his steps on a “dinosaur dance floor,” showing us where these beasts had populated the once tropical lands at the poles. He takes readers hunting for meteors, as meteorites preserved in the ice can be older than our planet and can tell us about our galaxy’s formation. Readers also encounter insects and fish that develop their own antifreeze and aquatic life in ancient lakes hidden miles under the ice that haven’t seen the surface in centuries. It turns out that explorers and scientists have found these extreme environments as prime ground for making scientific breakthroughs across a vast range of knowledge. Shubin shares unforgettable moments from centuries of expeditions to reveal just how far scientists will go to understand polar regions. In the end, what happens at the poles does not stay in the poles—the ends of the earth offer profound stories that will forever change our view of life and the entire planet. “Recasts the traditional story of evolutionary biology by placing women at its center…. Engaging, playful, erudite, discursive, and rich with detail.”—Sarah Lyall, The New York Times “A smart, funny, scientific deep-dive into the power of a woman’s body, Eve surprises, educates, and emboldens.”—Bonnie Garmus, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Lessons in Chemistry Why do women live longer than men? Why are women more likely to get Alzheimer’s? Why do girls score better at every academic subject than boys until puberty, when suddenly their scores plummet? And why, seriously why, do women have to sweat through our sheets every night when we hit menopause? These questions are producing some truly exciting science—and in Eve, with boundless curiosity and sharp wit, Cat Bohannon covers the past 200 million years to explain the specific science behind the development of the female sex. Eve is not only a sweeping revision of human history, it’s an urgent and necessary corrective for a world that has focused primarily on the male body for far too long. Eve will completely change what you think you know about evolution and why Homo sapiens has become such a successful and dominant species. Join journalist-in-residence Angie Coiro as we ask Cat Bohannon the questions about female bodies that scientists should have addressed long ago—and, guided by Bohannon’s blend of knowledge and skilled storytelling, start to find some answers. About the Author Cat Bohannon is a researcher and author with a Ph.D. from Columbia University in the evolution of narrative and cognition. Her essays and poems have appeared in Scientific American, Mind, Science Magazine, The Best American Nonrequired Reading, The Georgia Review, The Story Collider, and Poets Against the War. We are delighted that New York Times bestselling author Tommy Orange will be in conversation with Kaveh Akbar discussing Wandering Stars, the masterful sequel to his breakout bestseller There There. Extending his constellation of narratives into the past and future, Tommy Orange traces the legacies of the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 and the Carlisle Indian Industrial School through three generations of a family in a story that is by turns shattering and wondrous. Colorado, 1864. Star, a young survivor of the Sand Creek Massacre, is brought to the Fort Marion prison castle, where he is forced to learn English and practice Christianity by Richard Henry Pratt, an evangelical prison guard who will go on to found the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, an institution dedicated to the eradication of Native history, culture, and identity. A generation later, Star’s son, Charles, is sent to the school, where he is brutalized by the man who was once his father’s jailer. Under Pratt’s harsh treatment, Charles clings to moments he shares with a young fellow student, Opal Viola, as the two envision a future away from the institutional violence that follows their bloodlines. In a novel that is by turns shattering and wondrous, Tommy Orange has conjured the ancestors of the family readers first fell in love with in There There—warriors, drunks, outlaws, addicts—asking what it means to be the children and grandchildren of massacre. Wandering Stars is a novel about epigenetic and generational trauma that has the force and vision of a modern epic, an exceptionally powerful new book from one of the most exciting writers at work today and soaring confirmation of Tommy Orange’s monumental gifts. About the Speakers Tommy Orange is a graduate of the MFA program at the Institute of American Indian Arts. An enrolled member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, he was born and raised in Oakland, California. His first book, There There, was a finalist for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize and received the 2019 American Book Award. He lives in Oakland, California. Kaveh Akbar’s poems appear in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Paris Review, The Best American Poetry, and elsewhere. He is the author of two poetry collections: Pilgrim Bell and Calling a Wolf a Wolf, in addition to a chapbook, Portrait of the Alcoholic. He is also the editor of The Penguin Book of Spiritual Verse: 110 Poets on the Divine. He lives in Iowa City. A journey into the world of carbon, the most versatile element on the planet, by the New York Times bestselling author Paul Hawken Carbon is the only element that animates the entirety of the living world. Though comprising a tiny fraction of Earth’s composition, our planet is lifeless without it. Yet it is maligned as the driver of climate change, scorned as an errant element blamed for the possible demise of civilization. Here, Paul Hawken looks at the flow of life through the lens of carbon. Embracing a panoramic view of carbon’s omnipresence, he explores how this ubiquitous and essential element extends into every aperture of existence and shapes the entire fabric of life. Hawken charts a course across our planetary history, guiding us into the realms of plants, animals, insects, fungi, food, and farms to offer a new narrative for embracing carbon’s life-giving power and its possibilities for the future of human endeavor. In this stirring, hopeful, and deeply humane book, Hawken illuminates the subtle connections between carbon and our collective human experience and asks us to see nature, carbon, and ourselves as exquisitely intertwined—inseparably connected. About the Author PaulHawken is a bestselling author and leading voice calling for the regeneration of nature and humanity. He has authored nine books published in thirty languages, including The Ecology of Commerce, Blessed Unrest, and Regeneration. Founder of projects Drawdown and Regeneration, he is a renowned lecturer who consults with NGOs, governments, and corporations worldwide. He and his wife live in the Cascade Creek watershed in Northern California with coyotes, foxes, bobcats, ravens, flocks of nuthatches, red-tailed hawks, and pileated woodpeckers. A vital guide for collective political action against the climate apocalypse, from bestselling progressive intellectual Malcolm Harris—“a brilliant thinker and writer capable of making the intricacies of economic conditions supremely readable” (Vulture). Climate change is the unifying crisis of our time. But the scale of the problem can be paralyzing, especially when corporations are actively staving off changes that could save the planet but which might threaten their bottom lines. To quote Greta Thunberg, despite very clear science and very real devastation, the adults at the table are still saying “blah blah blah.” Something has to change—but what, and how? In What’s Left, Malcolm Harris cuts through the noise and gets real about our remaining options for saving the world. Just as humans have caused climate change, we hold the power to avert a climate apocalypse, but that will only happen through collective political action. Harris outlines the three strategies—progressive, socialist, and revolutionary—that have any chance of succeeding, while also revealing that none of them can succeed on their own. What’s Left shows how we must combine them into a single pathway: a meta-strategy, one that will ensure we can move forward together rather than squabbling over potential solutions while the world burns. Vital and transformative, What’s Left confirms Malcolm Harris as next-generation David Graeber or Mike Davis—a historian-activist who shows us where we stand and how we got here, while also blazing a path toward a brighter future. About the Author Malcolm Harrisis the author of the national bestseller Palo Alto: A History of California, Capitalism, and the World, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize; Kids These Days: The Making of Millennials; and Shit is Fucked Up and Bullshit: History Since the End of History. Psychotherapist Benjamin Yalom joins us to discuss Hour of the Heart, the memoir written in collaboration with his father and one of the most prominent psychotherapists of our time, Irvin D. Yalom.Hour of the Heart shows us how to relate to each other better in the moment, with more honesty and vulnerability. That hour of connection, occurring during a time of isolation and grief for so many, helped to sustain both patient and therapist, and enriched Yalom’s vision of what psychotherapy can do. Facing memory loss at age ninety-three as well as the fallout from a global pandemic that moved much of daily life online, legendary psychotherapist and bestselling author Irvin Yalom was forced to vastly reconsider the shape of his sessions with patients. Rather than throw in the towel in the face of change, Dr. Yalom considered head-on the limitations imposed by these new realities and revolutionized his practice. Turning his focus to what might be achieved in a one-hour, one-time-only meeting between patient and practitioner, Dr. Yalom employed an even more concerted use of his “here and now” approach. In Hour of the Heart, Yalom recounts some of these intense, life-changing sessions, exploring an array of human predicaments and his own late-career development as a therapist. In recounting these consultations, he shows how a therapist’s willingness to be open helps patients let down their own guards, leading to a deeper and more immediate connection—one necessary to achieving profound realizations in just sixty minutes. This vulnerability led Yalom to disclose details about his personal life that he might previously have kept hidden from patients, including his traumatic childhood in Washington, DC, the evolution of his thinking about philosophy and psychotherapy, and the recent death of his wife, Dr. Marilyn Yalom. Throughout, he pushes the boundaries of self-revelation as a therapeutic tool. Benjamin Yalom will be in conversation with author Doug Dorst. About the Authors Benjamin Yalom is a psychotherapist, creative coach, theater maker, and writer. His therapy and coaching focus on understanding and aligning one’s values with one’s living, and unlocking creative approaches to work and life. He is a longtime writing collaborator with his father, Irvin D. Yalom. Prior to his current doctoral studies in Marriage and Family Therapy, Ben was the visionary force behind foolsFURY Theater, which helped transform San Francisco’s performing arts scene in the early 2000s. He is also an award-winning fiction writer and holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. He lives with his wife, Dr. Anisa Yalom, and their three children in San Diego. Doug Dorst is the author of the New York Times-bestselling novel S. (acollaboration with filmmaker J.J. Abrams) and two other works of fiction: Alive in Necropolis (San Francisco’s 2009 One City One Book selection) and The Surf Guru: Stories. In one of their many shared artistic endeavors, he and Benjamin Yalom co-created foolsFURY Theater’s acclaimed play Monster in the Dark. Everything today is thoroughly modern! Deep Cuts Book Club is back with another round of female writing that changed literature: some of the most foundational authors of the Modernist movement in the early twentieth century. Both our Austen series and our Brontës series gave British women the chance to shine, so this year we’re hopping across the Atlantic Ocean for our first three books…before finishing our survey back in England with the poster girl for Modernism, Virginia Woolf. This year we’ll examine Edith Wharton, Kate Chopin, Willa Cather, and Virginia Woolf as a literary unit, comparing and contrasting the themes in their work. What mattered to these individual authors? Which themes concerned them all? Read alongside your favorite booksellers, at your favorite bookstore, with tea and snacks! Staff members Stephanie, Kristin, and Donna will lead discussion on a different novel for each of our four in-person meetings. Perks that make this not your average book club: For each book we will have an introductory email for all books that include themes to pay attention to while reading, historical context, and recommendations for our favorite adaptations; and a chance to hang out at Kepler’s after hours with some of your favorite booksellers! Join us for our first meeting on Monday, March 10 at 6:00 PM to discuss The Awakening by Kate Chopin. Subsequent meetings will take place: May 12: My Ántonia by Willa CatherSeptember 15: The Age of Innocence by Edith WhartonNovember 10: To the Lighthouse by Virginia WoolfLike last year, we will be offering an option to purchase entry AND each book together. If you just want to attend a few events, you can buy books and meeting entry individually. If you would prefer to read your own copies, you are welcome to! We will be asking for a $15 club fee for each meeting to cover food, drink, and staffing costs. Last year was a blast, and we can’t wait to continue our literary journey with you all! Hope to see you there, Donna, Kristin, and Stephanie Information Source: Kepler's Literary Foundation | eventbrite
