Exhibitions
Hong Kong Palace Museum Presents Groundbreaking New Exhibition: “Cartier and Women” The Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) is proud to present an exceptional new exhibition, “Cartier and Women”, from 14 April to 14 August 2023. Organised and curated by the HKPM with the support of Cartier, this is the first major exhibition on the unique role and influence of women in Cartier’s history. The exhibition comprises four thematic sections. Featuring approximately 300 stunning treasures created by Cartier, the exhibition showcases precious jewellery, timepieces, objects, accessories and archival records from the 19th century to the present day. The first section, “Royal and Aristocratic Women: Elegance and Prestige”, celebrates the significant role the royal and elite women played in the early history of Cartier in the 19th century. The second section, “New Women: Breaking with Tradition”, examines advances in jewellery design that reflected women’s emancipation. The Third Section, “Inquisitive Women: Cross-cultural Inspirations”, The influence of art from China and other parts of the world that enlivened Cartier creations for women and fulfilled a universal thirst for novelties are explored in this section,The fourth and final section, “Influential Women: Glamorous Legends”, explores the close relationship between Cartier jewellery and modern and contemporary female icons. Highlights include pieces from the collections of important and well-known women, including the Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly (1929-1982); renowned actresses Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2011), Brigitte Lin and Carina Lau; and businesswoman Pansy Ho.“Cartier and Women” unveils fascinating stories of the close relationship between women and jewellery. It also highlights how Chinese art, along with art from other parts of the world, has inspired the jeweller in terms of style and decorative motifs, as well as techniques and materials, and how Chinese aesthetics have influenced women's lifestyles and global fashion. The exhibition demonstrates the HKPM’s innovative curatorial approach and testifies to its mission to facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration and encourage dialogue between China and the rest of the world in arts and culture. Celebrating the role and influence of women throughout Cartier’s history The exhibition explores the bond between women and jewellery through a series of captivating narratives that reflect Cartier’s deep connections with many influential women throughout history and in the present day. The story of Jeanne Toussaint (1887-1976) is one of the highlights. As Cartier’s first female Creative Director, not only supported female empowerment through her jewellery design, but also embodied and encouraged a new freedom of attitude marked by femininity, free-spiritedness and independence. Her work paved the way for other women to take jewellery beyond the enhancement of external beauty to an intimate revelation of personality and spirit. Bank of China (Hong Kong) Presents: The Origins of Chinese Civilisation | Hong Kong Palace Museum

Sep 25, 2024–Feb 7, 2025 (UTC+8)
Hong Kong
Exhibitions
Chinese civilisation is ancient, profound, and enduring, standing as the the world's longest continuous civilisation. In 2002, the country launched the “Project to Trace the Origins of Chinese Civilisation” (the Project), which has yielded remarkable results over the past two decades, mapping out the historical trajectory of the origins of Chinese civilisation. The Project, through archaeological surveys and studies, has showcased the tangible continuity of the civilisation and the diversity of its origins. It reveals how different regions and cultures interacted with one another, and eventually merged into a cohesive whole, forming the “diversity in unity” developmental pattern of the Chinese people. This exhibition features the excavates of the Project as well as important archaeological discoveries in the centennial modern Chinese archaeology. Over one hundred exhibits come from fourteen archaeological institutions and museums in the Mainland and Hong Kong, covering nine archaeological cultures and nine major archaeological sites. It is one of the most comprehensive exhibitions in recent years dedicated to exploring the origins and achievements of Chinese civilisation. The exhibition is jointly organised by the HKPM and Art Exhibitions China, and sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong), the Museum’s strategic partner.

CHILDREN OF THE DUST | Hong Kong

Oct 25, 2024–Feb 8, 2025 (UTC+8)
Hong Kong
Exhibitions
This exhibition aims to create a quiet refuge where art is a temporary escape from the collective depression of the audience. Each work in the exhibition is made of natural materials, from minerals, dust, soil, to ice and fossils. In the exhibition, geological changes across a wide time dimension are juxtaposed with rapid and drastic social changes. Echoes from "deep time" soothe our fatigue in the daily hustle and bustle. The word "dust" in the title of the exhibition refers to the basic components of matter, and "sons of dust" comes from a well-known theory: the elements that make up the human body and matter come from supernova explosions. In other words, we, like the dust, ice and metal used in the works, are fragments of the vast history of the universe. We are all children of dust.
