Confined within the walls of the Warsaw Ghetto, Dr. Janusz Korczak struggles to protect the children at his orphanage from the horrors of the Second World War. There is not enough food or pairs of eyes to keep watch over them. Between a troublemaking thief, an abandoned girl, a malnourished boy, and a violin prodigy, Janusz has his hands full, but together they fight for beauty and hope in a world crumbling around them. Join us for an evening of folk retellings & modern mythmaking as creative walking artists PHIL SMITH & HELEN BILLINGHURST (aka CRAB & BEE) sit down with Birmingham filmmaker & Walkspace co-founder Andy Howlett to discuss their new work of re-enchanted & hallucinatory landscapes MATTER OF BRITAIN: MYTHLANDS OF ALBION. This event is hosted in partnership with Birmingham-based walking co-operative WALKSPACE. CRAB & BEE is a collaboration between Helen Billinghurst—painter & walking artist—& Phil Smith—writer and performance maker. Their collaborative work reflects a shared interest in alternative cultures, ecology, folklore & walking in different landscapes. In 2019, ‘Plymouth Labyrinth’—an extended walking and making project with different community groups & partners across Plymouth—culminated with an exhibition at the RAAY gallery, Stonehouse. They have given workshops in Cardiff, Huddersfield & Salford, presented papers at conferences including that of the Royal Geographical Society, and have performed a number of diagrammatical pieces at a variety of venues, from the Royal Conservatoire Scotland to the Fourth World Congress of Psychogeography. These have included ‘A Jubilee Scrying’ (2018), ‘Life and Death Walk’ (2019), ‘Nets, Webs & Carrier Bags’, ‘Boatburn Finale’ and ‘Around The Hills’ (all 2021), ‘Séance For Stonehouse’ and ‘Leadworking’ (both 2023), and ‘Patterns, Diagrams and Place Stories’ (2024). Triarchy Press published our essays and poems as ‘She Is The Sea’ (2019) and our book ‘The Pattern’ in 2020. We have made short films for The Box and UNFIX Festival (both 2021). We were co-organisers with Claire Hind of the ‘Walking’s New Movements’ conference at University of Plymouth in 2019, and with Claire were editors of ‘Walking Bodies’ (Triarchy Press) in 2020. Helen’s solo exhibition ‘Walking Diagrams’ was shown at the Roland Levinsky Building in 2019. Phil’s most recent publication is ‘Albion’s Eco-Eerie: TV and Movies of the Haunted Generations’ (Temporal Boundary Press, 2024). ANDY HOWLETT is a Birmingham based artist, writer & filmmaker. He uses creative walking tactics to uncover lost histories & expose the weird underbelly of the everyday. He has devised and delivered artistic walking tours for Flatpack Festival, Ikon Gallery, Historic Coventry and Voce Books. He shoots, edits & narrates exploratory & playful video essays such as ‘Escarpment’ (2023), commissioned by Solihull Council, & the feature-length ‘Paradise Lost’ (2021) about the death of modernism which screened at architecture film festivals around the world. He’s a co-founder of Walkspace & he’s interested in the power of collective walking to re-map & re-enchant our public spaces. WALKSPACE is a co-operative of artists & creatives in the West Midlands who are intrigued by walking in all its forms. From gentle strolls to hardcore psychogeography, group walks to solo explorations, Walkspace covers the interesting, weird edges of the humble perambulation. Formed in 2020, Walkspace has become a locus of activity for creative walking in the West Midlands region. The co-operative has exhibited at Artefact gallery & received commissions from the British Council, Creative Black Country & the Wildlife Trust. It aims to create a community of mutual support & collaboration whilst also forging links with walking artists nationally & internationally. This is one of our PLACE events, taking drifts, detours & derives with writers exploring the contemporary practices of psychogeography, hauntology, creative walking & our relationship with the places & spaces that make us. In Conversation: Titilope Sonuga & Andrew Burashko on Sankofa | Small World Centre

Sep 23, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Shaw
Musical
Arts
Join poet Titilope Sonuga, who crafted a new libretto reimagining Igor Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat, and Andrew Burashko, Artistic Director of the Art of Time Ensemble, as they discuss the world premiere of this bold new interpretation. Through the journey of a fictional soldier attempting to enlist in WWI, this Soldier’s Tale is set against the historical context of the No. 2 Construction Battalion — the only Canadian battalion composed of Black soldiers to serve in the First World War. In a psychological battle with the devil on the road to enlisting, the soldier embodies their resilience and enduring struggle against racism, discrimination, and historical erasure. Like the symbol of the Sankofa bird from which this story draws its name (a word in the Twi language of Ghana which means to go back and retrieve what was forgotten), this work blends past and future as the rhythm of Sonuga’s poetry weaves through Stravinsky’s original music. Sankofa is an invitation to honour a difficult history while moving toward a more promising future. Sankofa: The Soldier’s Tale Retold, presented by Art of Time Ensemble in association with Koffler Arts and The Glenn Gould School, will be performed from Thursday, October 24 through Sunday, October 27 at Harbourfront Centre Theatre.
