Offerings : Hilo de la SangreOfferings is a series of events organized by Nicole Thomas that provide a combination of musical performance and visual art to create a conversational space. Join us for a variety of reflections on diaspora and grief in Minnesota. Hilo de la Sangre is an exhibition including fifteen Latine visual artists from across the diaspora to consider the significance of blood as a material foundation of life, a carrier of complex lineages, a signal of violence and death, and a cultural and spiritual symbol of sacrifice and atonement. You are invited to enjoy original music and improvisations by Xochi de la Luna inspired by her experiences and the art in the museum. Xavier Tavera, participating artist and curator of Hilo de la Sangre, will be in conversation with Xochi about her new solo project named Sunken Moon, their shared experiences, and themes surrounding the exhibition. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged. Accessibility:Step-free access to buildingChair-free seatingMasks are encouraged and will be availableBiographiesSunken Moon is the new solo project of artist Xochi de la Luna. Combining found sound, live instruments, and using voice as an extra melodic and droning layer. Sunken Moon transmits haunted musings by unlocking memories of places and feelings that perhaps never existed. Xavier Tavera has had a passion for portraiture for most of his life as a way to engage with people and their stories. Tavera’s work oscillates between documentary and the imagined with the sole purpose of telling a story. After moving from Mexico City to the United States, Tavera has devoted himself to tell the stories of the Latin American diaspora, often recontextualizing with the purpose of providing visibility and fair representation. Nicole Thomas (she/they) is an interdisciplinary artist who centers Southeast Asian diaspora in the United States; mixed race and LGBTQIA+ narratives; and mental health effects of generational trauma. Artwork coming from their studio balances the act of play and memory processing. She strives to answer questions about how to provide comfort and grounding spaces for marginalized, underserved communities through various sensory experiences. Acknowledgements:Nicole Thomas is a fiscal year 2024 recipient of a Creative Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
