Your Time Starts Now... The mature students of Royal Hastings University's new art course have been trouble from day one. From acclaimed artist Alyson who seems oddly overqualified, to hapless Patrick who can barely operate design software, and city boy Cameron who blusters his way through assignments. Not to mention Jem, who's a gifted young sculptor... but cross her at your peril. The year-long course is blighted by students setting fire to one another's artwork, a rumoured extra-marital affair and a disastrous road trip. But finally they are given their last assignment: to build an art installation for a local manufacturer. With six students who have nothing in common except their clashing personal agendas, what could possibly go wrong? The answer is: murder. When the external examiner arrives to assess the students' coursework, he becomes convinced that a student was killed on the course and that the others covered it up. But is he right? Only a close examination of the evidence will reveal the truth. Your time starts now... Join us on Wednesday 16 October, 7pm, for a wonderful evening discussing everyone's favourite snack, with time for questions from the audience and a chance for Natalie to sign copies of CRUNCH. Tickets are non-refundable and if you can't make the event and would like a dedicated/signed copy of CRUNCH, please get in touch. About CRUNCH: A cultural history of the nation's favourite snack. We are a nation of crisp obsessives. Squashed into sandwiches on our lunch breaks and torn-open as centrepieces on pub tables, we buy tens of millions of packets every single day. But how did the humble potato snack become a national dish? CRUNCH: AN ODE TO CRISPS is journalist Natalie Whittle's love letter to the salty siren. She traces their evolution from the simplicity of salt sachets in the early 20th century, to 80s childhood favourites such as Hula Hoops, to the popularity of 'hand-cooked' gourmet flavours today. Along the way, Natalie will get to the heart of her own lifelong passion for crisps - exploring why they are bound up in ideas of childhood, nostalgia and comfort. Featuring crisp collectors, potato growers, flavour wizards and more, CRUNCH is a moreish read spanning 150 years of crisp history. About NATALIE WHITTLE: Natalie Whittle is a writer and editor based in Glasgow. Born and raised in South Wales, she read English Literature at University College London, and lived in Paris for three years working as a Time Out Paris journalist. She worked for 15 years at the Financial Times in London, where she held editing roles across the magazine and arts sections of FT Weekend. As the FT's food and drink editor, she won an award from the Guild of Food Writers in 2015 and also collaborated with Penguin Random House to produce a compilation of the FT's gastronomic interviews, 'Lunch with the FT: A Second Helping' in 2019. Her first non-fiction book, The 15-Minute City, was published by Luath Press in 2021. Information Source: The West Kirby Bookshop | eventbrite

We are thrilled to welcome the acclaimed author of STARVE ACRE and THE LONEY, Andrew Michael Hurley to West Kirby, to celebrate the publication of his latest book, BARROWBECK. Join us on Tuesday 29 October, 7pm, for an evening to get you in the Halloween spirit, when Andrew will be reading from the book, before being in conversation with Jordan from the bookshop, answering questions from the audience, and signing copies of his books. Tickets are £6/ £19 (inc. a copy of the book) and complimentary drinks will be provided. Event tickets are non-refundable, but if you'd like to reserve a signed/dedicated copy of the book, email hello@thewestkirbybookshop.com and we'll be more than happy to help. Praise for ANDREW MICHAEL HURLEY: ‘An amazing piece of fiction’ --- STEPHEN KING ‘A tour de force of physiological fantasia . . . Writing of this quality - sensuous, exact, observant - ensures that other scenes, too, pulse with vitality . . . Hurley's gothic storylines send spectres of deathliness through his fictional world. His prose brings it vividly alive’ --- Sunday Times ‘Hurley's ability to create a world that's like ours in many ways and really not in many others is again on full display’ --- Times ‘Beautifully written and triumphantly creepy’--- Mail on Sunday ‘A perfectly pitched tale of suspense and the dark side of folklore . . . perfect, page-turning reading for a dark night’ --- Herald About BARROWBECK: ‘It’s a hard place to live… and it’s an even harder place to leave’ Ten years after the publication of Hurley’s debut, THE LONEY, which went on to win the Costa First Novel of the Year and the Book of the Year at the British Book Awards, BARROWBECK will be a major publication for John Murray this autumn, cementing Hurley’s reputation as an extraordinary literary writer who has been credited with leading the folk horror revival. BARROWBECK is set in a remote valley on the Yorkshire-Lancashire border, where the inhabitants have lived uneasily with forces beyond their reckoning for centuries. They raise their families, work the land, and do their best to welcome those who come seeking respite. But there is an inscrutable otherness that runs through the village as persistently as the river. As one generation gives way to the next and ancient land is carved up in the name of progress, darkness gathers. The people of Barrowbeck have forgotten that they have only ever been guests in the valley. Now they must leave. Two thousand years of history is coming to an end. About ANDREW MICHAEL HURLEY: Andrew Michael Hurley lives in Lancashire with his family. His first novel, The Loney, was originally published by Tartarus Press as a 300-copy limited edition, before being republished by John Murray. It went on to sell in twenty languages, win the Costa Best First Novel Award and the Book of the Year at the British Book Awards. Devil's Day, his second novel, was picked as a Book of the Year in five newspapers, and won the Encore Award. Information Source: The West Kirby Bookshop | eventbrite

Join us on Tuesday 26 November, 7pm, when we'll be joined by the award-winning poet and writer, Vanessa Kisuule, to celebrate the publication of her debut non-fiction book, NEVERLAND: The Pleasures and Perils of Fandom. Vanessa will be in conversation, before answering questions from the audience and signing copies of NEVERLAND. Tickets are £6/ £20 (inc. a copy of the book) and complimentary drinks will be provided. Tickets are non-refundable and if you can't make the event and would like a signed & dedicated copy of NEVERLAND, email hello@thewestkirbybookshop.com and we'll sort that for you. About NEVERLAND: 'One of the most interesting writers at work in this country today. An exhilarating stylist and a beautiful thinker.' --- Max Porter 'This book doesn’t just tell a story – it grips you, challenging you to confront the complexities of hero worship and the deep, often conflicting emotions that come with it – and absolute must-read.' --- Caleb Femi 'With unflinching precision, Kisuule examines how cultural icons shape and sometimes distort our moral landscapes. She is a remarkable thinker who seeks to understand rather than judge.' --- Nathan Filer 'Neverland is a brutal, brave and beautifully written book that asks uncomfortable questions and exposes uncomfortable truths.' --- Yomi Adegoke The debut work of non-fiction by award-winning slam poet Vanessa Kisuule, this is a love letter to the musicians we adore and an unflinching look at the costs of hero worship Vanessa Kisuule is a big Michael Jackson fan. This fixation once gave her great joy, but now it keeps her up at night. In her bracingly honest, energetic and lively book she explores the fall-out from that fandom and how, or if, we can hold people to account whilst loving them at the same time. Why do famous musicians mean so much to us? How does the pop culture machine both mirror and magnify the worst aspects of human nature? Why is it so hard to accept that the people we love, famous or not, are capable of doing terrible things? As debates rage on about abusive public figures, Kisuule asks not just if we should separate the art from the artist, but how this moral conundrum informs the way we shape our relationships, families and notions of social justice. Witty, poetic and with references to R. Kelly, Britney Spears and a host of other famous faces, Neverland is both an ardent love letter to the music we love and an unflinching look at the costs of hero worship. About VANESSA KISUULE: Vanessa Kisuule is a writer, performer and facilitator based in Bristol. She has won over ten poetry slam titles and performed nationally and internationally. She has worked with the BBC, British Library, Tate, Royal Academy of Arts, Bristol Old Vic and Glastonbury Festival. She was the Bristol City Poet for 2018–2020, wrote and presented The Poetry Detective for Radio 4 and has two poetry collections with Burning Eye Books. She is the co-tutor for the Southbank New Poets Collective alongside Will Harris. Neverland is her debut non-fiction book. Information Source: The West Kirby Bookshop | eventbrite
