Glass has often been used to create offerings and gifts and to landmark significant life events due to its precious nature. By using the process of sheet glass fusing you will create a copper foil and wire token or offering to encapsulate between two sheets of glass. The workshop will be spent preparing and arranging the copper which will later be fired in a kiln for 24 hours at temperatures up to 800°C, where the two pieces of glass fuse together, trapping the copper permanently into the glass. The tokens can be made to hang by partially fusing a loop of copper wire into the glass. This free event is suitable for all members of the public age 12 and over. Children 16 and under must be accomapnied by an adult. The subject of myth and how historically people create rituals of loss are covered as points of information and inspiration. This event is part of Being Human Festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 7–16 November 2024. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, with generous support from Research England, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
