This is quickly becoming our favorite resort! We went in October (you can read my review from then on here as well) and again in March and have already planned our third visit for this fall! We opted for a third story ocean view room this time (we had a private corner pool suite last time). We loved listening to the waves every night from our room and waking up to the sunrise every morning. The room was very similar to the last one we had. Very modern, marble bathroom etc but this room had a jetted soaking tub. We requested building 67 so we could be close to the infinity pool and Helios restaurant. From the moment you arrive you are treated like family. Israel, the bellboy captain, is always prepared with a warm welcome and Kevin at the front desk is always a wonderful familiar face to see! Alberto, Sergio and Romeo are amazing golf cart drivers! They always get you where you need to go with a smile and a warm greeting! They have become our friends and we look forward to seeing them again soon! All of the butlers are excellent as well. Rafael and Mariana took great care of us! If there is anything at all you need, don’t hesitate to ask your butler. The food and drinks here are excellent. There are top shelf options included such as crown royal, captain Morgan, grey goose etc. David, Jonathan and Mayra made sure our cups were never empty :) Daniel at La Jarra (trs only beach bar) was a treat! We enjoyed hanging out there with him. He works very hard keeping all the trs guests happy! Alfredo at La Terraza (the “quiet” pool) made us some special custom drinks that were amazing! We ate breakfast every day at Helios (capricho wasn’t open) and often times lunch as well. My husband even started making up breakfast sandwiches for himself lol and they made them for him every day! Martha and Wendy made breakfasts exceptional! They even brought us a sweet goodbye dessert plate :) Ivonne is an amazing hostess and has become someone that we feel is our friend and we look forward to seeing her again soon! Our favorite dinner spots are Tentazione and La Boheme. We like sitting in the special booth there! We tried Sumptuori (hibachi) this trip and enjoyed it as well. The evening entertainment here is the BEST that we’ve encountered since Covid restrictions affected the resorts. The chic show is running on a smaller scale and is in the terrace bar, full moon. The burlesque show is fabulous and should not be missed! We also enjoyed ****** night! Be prepared to make new friends here on a nightly basis! It’s so much fun! Make sure to check out Las Rocas, the salt water pool. Bring your snorkel gear and water shoes! We also enjoyed a round of putput golf at the activities center! Insider tip: take an early morning walk before it gets hot out. Grab a latte (with amaretto lol) from the lobby bar and head out. Walk all over. Discover the cenote and the flamingo area. Overall this is a beautiful resort and we had a lovely vacation. But, just like every resort in our experience, there is good and bad. It's always a compromise. The good does outweigh the bad here, but you should be prepared for the potential of a few challenges. The Good: The food is universally good across the property and at the neighboring hotels that are included. Really no misses for us on the food quality. The resort is huge. This is good and potentially bad. If you like to walk and explore, this is a great place. They have a very nice path along the ocean that allows for (very) long walks for fun or to get to your dinner reservation. If you don't mind or even like walking, again this is a great place. It's beautiful and for us this was a huge plus. If you have mobility issues, this could be a problem or just an inconvenience. They do have many golf carts running around and you can get rides. You may have to wait, but again it's very doable, maybe just not convenient. We never took a cart, but I watched many do it. We stayed in a swim up casita and it was very nice. Nice big room, nice bed, great outdoor shower, overall a super nice room. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. Makes those long walks more interesting for sure. The place is generally very clean. They are always working, cleaning, etc. and it the effort shows. The alcohol is pretty top shelf and they also serve many beers in cans. This is something you don't see much of anymore. The Challenges: The restaurant reservation system is lousy and wonky. Everyone seems to complain about it so I hope they will change it. It's a web page where you have to book all dinner reservations. The concierge gave us bad info on the first day and that did not help (he told us you can only book 48 hour out and that was not true - We booked the whole week on day 1). Many restaurants are booked up, and in our case we had to eat at the same restaurants twice in a row for dinners (This happened twice). We heard some say they could not get reservations at all ( I can't confirm this as true) but it's not a good system and something to be aware of. The pools were cold. Not a big surprise, but when you can't swim in the ocean (due to the concrete barriers) it was kind of a problem for me. One evening it poured rain and you could see things falling apart. Room service was backed up for hours, it was very difficult to get a cart ride, and you could feel the service in general fall off. They are clearly not prepared to excel in challenging conditions. The worst of this for us was being denied a ride in a cart during heavy rain by a stressed out staff member. He told me he was ”too busy” to drive us back to our room from a restaurant. He was apparently delivering luggage, but I thought this was not acceptable. I think the guest experience comes first and why would you let your guest walk (a good 5 to 6 minutes) in the heavy rain. I visited the El Dorado Maroma with my friend for a week in January 2023. Believe me, this is the best resort ever! I have stayed at many all-inclusive resorts in the Cancun/Riviera Maya area, and this resort outranks all others! The service is simply amazing, from the second you arrive until you have to leave. We absolutely loved Manuel at the beach, who greeted us each morning and walked out with us to help us find the perfect spot for the day. He didn’t just hand us our towels - he laid them out for us on the loungers or the bali bed chosen, then adjusted the umbrella so we could be in the shade, as we preferred. He then continued checking on us throughout the day and adjusting our umbrella as the sun moved. Talk about being pampered! He was wonderful! We also loved Little D (Diego) at the beach, who brought us drinks and made us smile - he seems so happy to be there! I can’t forget to mention the beach - it is the best beach of any resort I have stayed at! Clean, white sand, and so few people. That’s another great thing about this resort - no crowds!! It is small, quiet and relaxing. So peaceful! If you want a party resort, this is not it. It was perfect for us! Overall, you will not be sorry if you choose this resort!!! We loved it and will return again, hopefully soon, and hopefully with my hubby next time! I can’t wait to hear those wonderful friends tell me “Welcome Home”!

After reading some dodgy reviews we were a little nervous about our holiday, but thankfully our nervousness was eased as soon as we arrived. Our arrival was met by very friendly staff and we were checked in very quickly and professionally. Our room was in block 8 mid way between the lobby and main pool. The sofa bed was made up for us, but our son was too big for it, luckily we had two double beds so he had one of those. The room is slightly dated but very functional, it was kept nice and clean, but we did have to ask for the fridge to be restocked. The food in all the bars and buffets was lovely. We used the Dalia buffet more as it was quieter. The sports bar is brilliant and the food there is very good. Drinks in the lobby were the best, and always served with a smile especially from Daisy. The main pool was good, we always managed to get a sun bed, and the music in the afternoons was fun. The beach was very nice we were lucky and had no seaweed all the time we were there. We went to the Bravo show and had a great night, it does cost extra but was well worth it. Getting the collectivo to playa del carmen was great fun, if not a little bit cosy!! We also had a great day at Xplor park which is only about a 20 min drive away. All in all we had a great stay at the Colonial, would we return? Probably not as we always like to try new places, but we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Large complex with several pools and dining options, though some amenities not available due to covid. Generally helpful and kind staff, one gentleman at the concierge wasn't the best but the manager was great! The beach had lots of space, places to sit and staff available for beverage service. Overall a nice place to stay!
