One of my favorite sightseeing spot in Tokyo — Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa. The huge red lantern hanging from the Kaminarimon Gate on the right side has become the symbol of Asakusa itself! 🏮 When you pass through the Kaminarimon Gate in Asakusa, you’ll arrive at one of the oldest and most famous shopping districts in Japan — Nakamise Dori. It’s an ideal shopping spot for traditional gifts and snacks, and of course these cute strawberry ‘dango’ caught my attention! 🍓 Had to queue for half an hour for these cute cakes. Asakusa Temple, as the most famous and oldest temple in Tokyo, is also the face of Japan and the symbol of Asakusa, a must-visit place in Tokyo. / The first thing: 'About Asakusa Temple' The full name of Asakusa Temple in Tokyo is Kinryuzan Asakusa Temple, which is the oldest temple in Tokyo. The main deity worshipped in the temple is the Holy Guanyin Bodhisattva, so it is also called Asakusa Guanyin Temple. The history of Asakusa Temple can be traced back to 628 AD. It is said that two fishermen found a 5.5 cm high golden Guanyin statue while fishing in Miyato River. It is the oldest temple in Tokyo. During the Edo period, Tokugawa Ieyasu designated Asakusa Temple as the pilgrimage site for the Tokugawa shogunate, leading to the prosperity of the area around the temple. Besides the main hall of Asakusa Temple, there are many famous buildings and historical sites within the temple grounds, such as the five-story pagoda, and numerous scenic spots to enjoy. Every year around New Year's Day, the temple is crowded with worshippers. To the right upon entering Asakusa Temple, there is a large fountain. Near the Kaminarimon, there are rickshaw pullers dressed in traditional attire, bilingual in English and Japanese, generally charging 5000 yen per person (half an hour). 2. Asakusa Temple is illuminated at night after sunset until around 23:00, showcasing the main hall in a different light. 3. There are many specialty shops in Nakamise Shopping Street, and Ningyo-yaki is highly recommended. 4. Sensō-ji, officially known as Kinryū-zan Sensō-ji, is located in Asakusa 2-chome, Taito Ward, Tokyo, Japan, and is the oldest temple in Tokyo. The main deity, the Bodhisattva Kannon, is commonly known as 'Asakusa Kannon'. Kaminarimon - the gate of entry, also a classic spot for photographs. Hōzōmon - after passing through the Kaminarimon and shopping for specialties at Nakamise Shopping Street (one of the oldest shopping streets in Japan), you will reach the Hōzōmon. Omikuji - Incense - Omamori On both sides of the temple, you can see small booths for drawing and interpreting omikuji fortunes. Take the lucky ones with you, and tie the others to the nearby racks for Kannon's blessing. Pilgrims can purchase incense at the incense office to the right of the main hall, and also obtain omamori charms according to their personal wishes after doing their homework in advance. Main Hall - The place where the main deity, the Kannon statue, is enshrined, hence also called the Kannon Hall. Before visiting the main hall, cleanse yourself at the hand-watering pavilion and prepare a 5-yen coin (the homophonic 'go-en' implies a good connection). Gojū-no-tō - The top layer of the pagoda contains a relic from Sri Lanka. Now, the main hall of the pagoda is located on the west side, whereas it was on the east side before reconstruction. The bell of Sensō-ji used to mark the time by ringing during the Edo period. However, now it only rings once at 6 a.m. every day. On New Year's Eve, December 31st, the bell is rung 108 times according to Buddhist teachings, symbolizing the elimination of 108 worldly desires.

Entry is free and many people come here to take photos wearing kimonos. Getting to witness this temple with cherry blossoms all around was especially mesmerising. It is such a beautiful and peaceful environment. 🪙 Inside the main hall of the temple, you can throw a coin to make a prayer or a wish for luck.
