镇远古城沿河而建，两岸的民居既统一又有自己的特色，舞阳河旋绕在府城和卫城中间，两座大石拱桥像两条纽带横架河上，连结两城，是镇远古城灵秀所在，非常值得一去。但舞阳河又是一个单独的国家级重点风景名胜区，是镇远最先开发的景区之一。从古城前往，不到半小时就可以到达景区。大多游客都是在镇远古城购买船票游玩下舞阳，从镇远到舞阳河不到半小时就可到，门票120元（含船票），船上的观光时间约两小时，景区步道观光约半小时。绿水、险峰、奇峡是舞阳河的主要特点，孔雀开屏景点是舞阳河的标志。时间宽裕的可去看看，如果参加了镇远古城水上游的就不要去了，毕竟门票和船票相对较贵，游览也比较同质化。一般在镇远古城就能参加诸如高过河、舞阳河这样的游船项目，建议参加当地的散客团，半天或一天这种，比较方便，注意要选择那种纯玩团的，报团前表明态度不进购物点。

舞阳河清澈干净在镇远古镇河流以“S”形穿城而过。正因为在古镇这个地方河流拐了一个非常大的弯，又将这样的一座古老城镇分为了两个非常重要的部分，从高处俯瞰下去就像是一个十分规整的太极图，所以舞阳河的河水使镇远获得太极古城的别称。
