I love this ancient town in Shanghai that doesn't require an entrance fee more than Wuzhen
Wuzhen is beautiful, but it has a stronger commercial atmosphere. Compared to Wuzhen, I prefer the ancient town of Zhujiajiao in Shanghai, which is just as scenic but has more of a lived-in feel: potted plants on street corners, smoke from kitchen chimneys, clothes drying on balconies, street food... No wonder locals from Shanghai also like to stroll around here!
📍Address: No. 555, Kezhiyuan Road, Qingpu District, Shanghai.
🚇Transport: Take Exit 1 of Zhujiajiao Station on Metro Line 17 (1.5 km walk), or take the 1510 tourist line from Exit 5, or take a boat into Zhujiajiao from Exit 1 of the metro.
🚗Self-driving: Navigate to Entrance 1 or 2 of Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, both entrances have parking lots.
🎫Ticket: No entrance fee is required, open all day. Some small attractions within the scenic area charge a fee (you can buy a combined ticket for 60 RMB/person, including Kezhiyuan, Hexinyuan, and Helong Art Museum).
➡️My touring route:
Entrance 1 of Zhujiajiao Ancient Town》Kezhiyuan》Hexinyuan》Fangsheng Bridge》Taian Bridge》Yuanjin Zen Monastery》North Street》Lang Bridge》Zhujiajiao Chenghuang Temple》Zhujiajiao Daqing Post Office
Just take photos and enjoy the food along the way, the general route is like this~
1️⃣Kezhiyuan, originally the private garden of Ma Wenqing, also known as 'Ma's Garden', where you can enjoy the landscape of Jiangnan gardens.
2️⃣Hexinyuan, also a garden-style architecture, smaller than Kezhiyuan, but the scenery is equally matched.
3️⃣Fangsheng Bridge, the 'longest', tallest, and largest five-arched bridge in Shanghai, where a life-release ceremony is held under the bridge on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month.
4️⃣Taian Bridge, the steepest single-arch bridge in the ancient town.
5️⃣Yuanjin Zen Monastery, originally dedicated to the image of the Chen State Holy Mother, commonly known as the 'Goddess Temple'. Climbing the bell tower offers a view of Zhujiajiao Ancient Town.
6️⃣North Street, the busiest street in the town, with various art shops and food stores, including Handalong Soy Garden.
7️⃣Lang Bridge, a symbolic building of the ancient water towns in the south of the Yangtze River.
8️⃣Zhujiajiao Chenghuang Temple, where the City God and his wife are worshipped.
9️⃣Zhujiajiao Daqing Post Office, established in 1903, where you can buy souvenirs and get stamps.
‼️【Hand-rowed Boats】There are several boat docks in the ancient town, see picture 1️⃣8️⃣ for details
‼️【Zhujiajiao Ancient Town Cuisine】
Shanghainese childhood delicacies would not be complete without the presence of Zhujiajiao, including ginkgo tree grandma's zongzi, Handalong Soy Garden, zha meat, screws, fermented rice wine, mung bean cake...
very beautiful town, great for family and good to know some history too!
Such a nice place to enjoy a more traditional vibe in Shanghai! is quite far from the city center but you can easily spend the whole day walking around the town and it’s alleyways and canals. Views are great and of visited on weekdays is not crowded at all!
location is super easy to get to with metro. village is just next door to the metro with a short walk. beautiful bridges and water town
Non-holidays can be played in depth, and there are still a lot of people on vacation. The attractions in the joint ticket are worth seeing, very beautiful. If you have never experienced the ancient town and the old street, you can experience it.
Zhujiajiao Scenic Area is free as a whole, but some attractions are charged. The class plantation garden is the largest garden in Zhujiajiao Scenic Area. The garden area inside is large, with all kinds of pavilions and pavilions, and it is very distinctive. Hexin Garden is named for the Hexin Pavilion in the garden. The two pavilions stand together and are connected internally. It seems that they have not seen it in other places. Although the area of the park is small, the garden is full of characteristics, and the various furnishings in the front room are also very interesting. The other three attractions are not so outstanding, but they also have their own characteristics. The clock tower of Yuanjin Temple is a good place to climb up to see Zhujiajiao; the abacus and the opera building of Chenghuang Temple are very distinctive; Helong Art Museum stands in water, and you can watch the river of Zhujiajiao up close in the art museum. Overall, there will be fewer people at the attractions charged, and the scenery will be more distinctive.
