Helpoort

Helpoort in Mastrik is a castle. After the so-called Hell Gate, the Black Death spread. The sick were carried out outside the door and died. So there is the Hell Gate. Now it sounds particularly ironic. There is a cafe nearby that is very good.

The gates of hell near the Hell of Paradise Bookstore are the only stone arches in the Netherlands. When the Black Death was popular, they were piled with corpses. It is hard to imagine now!

A small museum located on the second level of the old city walls. The entrance is on the right behind the gate house. Entrance fees applies €3 each. The museum is small with limited artefacts on display. But nonetheless interesting. The steps up the museum is narrow and do be cautious when ascending the steps.
