3-Star Hotels in Basilicata, Italy

This was my favourite place to stay during a 15 day holiday travelling around southern Italy and Turin. Very warm welcome from the staff, a lovely quiet bedroom (as requested as my husband is sensitive to noise) and wonderful views from the terrace. A very easy walk to see the main sights, superb breakfasts and plenty of restaurants to have dinner close by - very good recommendations from the hotel. I really wish we could have stayed longer and next time we will. Matera is very beautiful and was very quick to reach by train from Bari. Thank you all at Palazzo Belsanti - highly recommend.

The place was perfect: central, close to nice restaurants and bars, well decorated, nice staff, great SPA (worth the 25 EUR fee to access it!) and what a great breakfast buffet! Do choose the suites, they really are worth the extra price. They were all booked for our second night and so we had to move to a standard room and it wasn’t as great.

Siamo arrivati a Matera di domenica mattina e avremmo avuto seri problemi a posteggiare l'auto se il gestore del B&B e sua moglie non si fossero attivati per darci modo di lasciarla in uno spazio autorizzato e vicino alla struttura. La stanza era pulita e confortevole, il bagno completo di tutto il necessario. La posizione del B&B è tra le più vicine alla zona storica della città e abbiamo avuto modo di gustare la nostra visita concedendoci anche una breve pausa prima di cena per poter poi ammirare lo spettacolo dei Sassi illuminati . A colazione c'era ampia scelta sia di prodotti dolci che salati. Insomma un'esperienza più che soddisfacente.

Devo subito premettere che eravamo giunti a Matera senza aver effettuato alcuna prenotazione. Dopo vari tentativi andati a vuoto, dal Piccolo Albergo ci hanno fatto sapere che avevano ancora una stanza disponibile, ma con un letto alla ”francese” in pratica una piazza e mezza. Quindi nessuna sorpresa quando ci siamo trovati in questa camera, al secondo piano senza ascensore, dove anche il bagno era minuscolo. Niente tavolino, né frigo o un bicchiere in bagno ma soprattutto nessuna climatizzazione... momentaneamente fuori servizio. Molta cortesia e disponibilità (ci hanno reso disponibile un posteggio gratuito per due giorni) e non è poco. Anche il prezzo è stato ragionevolmente piccolo.

We stayed for 1 night as we were traveling through Italy on a 30 year anniversary trip. This place was amazing! Clean! Perfect location! And the most perfect host ever!! Dominica was AMAZING! HELPFUL! CRAZY IN THE BEST WAY! The only thing I would have changed is if I could have kid napped her and taken her with us but we know that’s frowned upon. She made dinner reservations, explained the map and best places to see for photo ops and she is just plain joy! The room was beautiful and comfortable. They had transportation for us from the parking to our room and back (which I highly recommend). Communication with Dominica was at the top, she answered every question with in minutes, she has a true spirit of excellence! Matera is a must see. If I ever come back this is where I’d stay!

Despite its very high rating, as well as the numerous positive comments about owner/hostess Miriam, our stay at Livingstone B&B in Matera greatly exceeded my wife's & my expectations during our two night stay in June 2024. There are three individual guest rooms (we saw all three, and each one is massive, especially when compared to hotel rooms in Italy) with ensuite bathrooms. Our room, New York (the other two are London and Paris), was on the top floor of the apartment, so we enjoyed privacy and solitude, plus the added bonus of a private balcony area, complete with a sun lounger. Livingstone is bright, modern, and impeccably clean. Miriam obviously takes great pride in Livingstone, and is certainly passionate about providing the absolute best experience possible for each and every guest. The photos are 100% accurate, and reflect what you see and experience when staying at Livingstone. Livingstone is conveniently located less than a three minute walk (two right turns, then down the hill) to the town square, where you'll enjoy magnificent views down to the Old Town historic area of Matera. If ever my wife & I return to Matera, we will absolutely definitely stay at Livingstone again.

I enjoyed my time here, was short, one night, but the host was nice (no English at all), provided written instructions and help to what to see/ where to go. The room was excellent and clean, very large and very large bathroom (with 2 showers). Thanks!

Purtroppo come altri utenti qui mi sono davvero trovato male. POSIZIONE: Parlando della posizione se ti ci portano e visiti il centro ogni giorno o prendi le scale mobili per girare la città non è un grosso problema. Impari presto come girare perchè è semplice. Ma se sei con la tua macchina, è molto scomoda su una salita ripida e con parcheggi pubblici a pagamento tutti occupati rendono quasi impossibile trovare posto. Se non è Roberto che ti fa una cortesia a tenerlo tra i tre posti risicati che ha liberi nel suo cortile perchè, parole sue a telefono dopo non aver trovato il posto nel pomeriggio per recarmi a fare una doccia prima di cena, ”non è che può stare li a guardarti il posto, tu non trovi nulla perchè lo devi chiamare prima e te lo fa trovare. Noi eravamo con la nostra macchina e se io pago per il parcheggio (servizio incluso nella prenotazione) non dovresti darmelo disponibile sempre?!?! COLAZIONE: Minimale con prodotti confezionati da supermercato. Caffè e cappuccino preparati sul momento nel retro. Questa a mio modesto parere è l'unica cosa che ci può stare se non si è schizzinosi. STANZE: piccola, poco illuminata e con climatizzatori presenti ma malfunzionanti in piena estate a 35 gradi. Roberto dice che a mezzanotte vengono staccati (questo scoperto al secondo giorno) ma non hanno funzionato nè al primo nè al secondo e nemmeno al terzo giorno di tre prenotati. Altro servizio incluso nella prenotazione in questo caso per nulla rispettato. Il letto lo abbiamo trovato un po' rigido....ma anche questo è un aspetto soggettivo quindi esente da critica. BAGNO: Diciamo non proprio nella norma. GESTIONE: Nonostante a suo modo cercava di essere ospitale e simpatico ha purtroppo assunto gesti inappropriati risultando invadente ed inopportuno (anche se si è scusato FORSE PER L'ECCESSIVA CONFIDENZA). PREZZO TROPPO ALTO PER IL TRATTAMENTO RICEVUTO. MI SPIACE MA NON MI SENTO DI CONSIGLIARLO OK LA VACANZA ECOLOGICA MA FARE UNA VACANZA ECOLOGICA E SOGGIORNARE IN UN ALBERGO IN FERIE PER NOI E' ALTRO. Aggiungiamo al termine ma non meno importante: Siamo stati li perchè in passato c'è stata una famigliare che ci si era trovata bene ma anche lei, con noi in ferie, concorda con il nostro pensiero ed esperienza. E la foto che abbiamo postato qui rappresenta che ci siamo davvero stati perchè è il cartello affisso in bagno con i consigli utili per la vacanza ecologica. Peccato che mancasse tutta l'altra parte del soggiorno.

Siamo stati in questa struttura per 4 notti, giorni pieni di incertezze, pochissima disponibilità e scarsissima empatia. Arrivando in un giorno di pioggia troviamo il nulla.. nessuno che ci accoglie, alla ricerca dell’ingresso con ombrelli alla mano. Con noi c’era mia figlia, una bimba di un 1 anno per la quale avevamo semplicemente la necessità di riscaldare il biberon la mattina e bollire dell’acqua per la pasta, da noi fornita, a cena, ma per i gestori della struttura (che erano a conoscenza della presenza della bimba avendo fornito la culla in camera) queste due semplici richieste sembravano un problema in quanto, a loro dire, non avevano accesso alla cucina in assenza del cuoco. Tramite mail ci avevano detto che nella struttura c’era disponibilità sia per pranzo che per cena di un ristorante, arrivati lì invece ci è stato detto che il pranzo non si poteva fare e per la cena se ci organizzavamo diversamente per loro sarebbe stato meglio in quanto dato il periodo fuori stagione, essendo solo noi in struttura, avrebbero dovuto chiamare il cuoco appositamente. Per quanto riguarda la colazione ci aspettavamo prodotti tipici dell’agriturismo a km 0 in realtà su richiesta un semplice cappuccino e 4 pezzi di crostata, avremmo voluto assaggiare il latte prodotto in loco ma ci è stato detto che dovevamo avvisare. E per finire sia sul sito che al momento della prenotazione si parlava di passeggiata a cavallo ed escursioni poi al momento ci hanno detto che non si poteva fare nulla per mancanza del responsabile.

The rooms are old caves modified to hotel standards and are quaint but comfortable with a small fridge, Sky TV (little in English) and reasonable AC. We enjoyed four nights with friends in Matera. The hotel is well placed, surrounded by restaurants in the heart of the 'Sassi' - Old Town. There are tables and chairs outside the 'Hobbit' style rooms to enjoy an al fresco breakfast or late night drink. There is no bar and reception is closed by 10pm, so you will need to be prepared with beers and drinks. Some reception staff only speak Italian or very limited English. There is no parking at the hotel or for non Matera residents in the Sassi. We found parking at 'Damascus Parking' (details provided by the hotel), was reasonable at 20 Euros per day with a shuttle to and from the hotel. Be sure to organise your return shuttle in good time especially if leaving early. The rooms have a portable dehumidifier which would be well advised to use. If you are not familiar with these boxes on wheels ask the hotel to explain. The access to the hotel and all of the old town is by steps and a labyrinth of paths which are smooth and can be slippery. We advise god trainers rather than flip flops for getting around. We found Matera a charming adventure built in a higgeldy piggeldy warren that is firmly focused on tourism. Three days are more than enough, more would be stretching everything on offer.
