Porto Cathedral
No. 10 of Best Things to Do in Portugal

Porto Cathedral

7.8
4.7/5
121 reviews
Porto Cathedral stands prominently on a hill in Porto, one of the city's ancient monuments. The facade is almost devoid of decoration, making it quite unique among church architecture: two square bell towers flank the sides, with a Romanesque rose window and a Baroque-era portico set against a plain facade, while the crenellated battlements above give the entire structure a fortress-like appearance. The Baroque loggia on the side facade, designed by Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, adds a touch of splendor to the exterior. Porto Cathedral stands majestically on the high ground of the old town, one of the ancient buildings still existing in Porto and an important example of Romanesque architecture in Portugal. The cathedral was first built around 1110 and largely completed in the 13th century, with Gothic and Baroque elements added over the following centuries: the Romanesque nave, Gothic cloister, and Baroque loggia coexist within the same structure, making a visit akin to flipping through a three-dimensional architectural history book. As a city landmark that has existed for nearly a millennium, the church was built approx. in 1110, with construction spanning a century. Even today, many intricate architectural features remain fascinating. The square bell towers on either side of the church are quite unique due to their nearly bare facades, while the crenellated structures at the top incorporate castle-like elements. Additionally, the interior features many delightful blue-and-white tile murals, a hallmark of Portuguese architecture.Porto · 89.3km from Pinhao

Park of the Nations

Park of the Nations is located along the banks of theTagus Riverand was transformed from the site of the 1998 World Expo. This World Expo was themed "The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future" and was held to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the explorer Vasco da Gama's arrival in India. The Vasco da Gama Tower BABYLON 360º within the park and theVasco da Gama Bridgenearby are both named after him. After the World Expo closed, this former industrial shoreline was not left idle but was transformed into a new waterfront district integrating office, cultural, residential, and commercial spaces, often regarded as a successful example of post-Expo site utilization. Strolling along the waterfront promenade that stretches along the river, you can still see many Expo buildings that have been preserved to this day: the Lisbon Oceanarium and the interactive science center, which evolved from the original pavilions, are both located here; the sail-shaped Vasco da Gama Tower BABYLON 360º, the large-span concrete canopy of the Portugal Pavilion, and the white vaulted gallery of the Gare Do Oriente make this an area concentrated with modern architecture in Lisbon, forming a sharp contrast with the narrow stone alleys of the old town. You can also take a sightseeing cable car suspended over the Tagus River to overlook the entire park and the river from above; after nightfall, the bars and restaurants along the river light up, and the lights of theVasco da Gama Bridgein the distance are clearly visible.Portugal · Lisbon

Chapel of Souls

Chapel of Souls is located on Rua de Santa Catarina in the city center of Porto, Portugal, and is one of the representative religious buildings in the area. It was built in the early 18th century, with the overall building based on a simple stone structure, featuring an entrance, arched decorative windows, and a two-story bell tower on the front. A distinctive feature here is the large area of traditional blue-and-white Portuguese tiles covering the exterior walls. The tile decoration was completed in 1929, and the images depict the lives of Saint Francis and Saint Catherine, as well as religious stories. The blue-and-white patterns extend along the front and side walls, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding busy commercial street. The interior of the building features a main altar, side altars, and religious art decorations, including an altarpiece depicting the Ascension of Christ, as well as stained-glass windows.Porto · 88.8km from Pinhao

Public Library of Salamanca - Casa de las Conchas is located in the heart of Salamanca's old town and is a highly recognizable palace in this university city. Construction began in the late 15th century, commissioned by Rodrigo Arias Maldonado, a knight of the Order of Santiago, and it took over 20 years to complete. The facade blends a Gothic framework with early Renaissance Plateresque ornamentation, serving as a testament to the era of transition between old and new architectural styles. More than 300 protruding scallop shell carvings cling to the exterior, densely covering the walls, a feature quite rare among similar buildings in Spain. Today, the building serves as a public library. Stepping inside, you can visit the courtyard surrounded by two-story arcades, where the row of short marble columns on the upper level is particularly exquisite.Spain · Salamanca
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima

5
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima is located in the Santarém region in central Portugal and is an important Catholic pilgrimage site. The site gradually formed a religious complex due to a religious event witnessed by three shepherds in the early 20th century. The core area includes an open-air square and religious buildings. The square is characterized by geometric limestone paving. In the center stands the neoclassical cathedral. The adjacent Chapel of Apparition retains the original stone structure, marking the legendary location of the apparition of the Virgin. Pilgrimage activities include traditional forms such as kneeling rituals and candlelight parades. Believers often complete religious practices along specific routes. The attached religious museum collects objects donated by believers of all generations, reflecting the expression of faith in different periods. As a modern religious activity center, its building complex combines traditional religious elements with modern functional design, and has both religious rituals and cultural heritage protection functions, providing researchers with samples for observing contemporary religious practices.Portugal · Fatima

The marina is located in the heart of the old Porto city, on the edge of the Douro River. Historically, merchant ships from here were an important means of trade for the city and the world. Notorious historical wars also took place here, and there is a bronze relief to commemorate this historical moment. Today this area is loved by Portos and tourists alike, with countless bars, cafés and restaurants filled with smiling people day and night. The charming medieval old buildings, the old streets and alleys, the Porto wine cellar on the opposite side of the Gaya Pier, the Don Luis I iron bridge, the traditional upturned boats floating on the river... Some people say that this is the best place in Porto. A romantic place, indeed it is a wonderful thing to sit under a medieval arch and have dinner with a loved one. The Libera Pier at the festival has beautiful fireworks, which makes the area more popular. Walking west along the river bank, past the square, you can see the Casado Infante, located in Ruada Alfândega 10. The navigator Prince Henry was born here in 1394. Historically, it used to be the customs office of the city. It is now used to store the city archives, including Prince Henry's baptism of birth and his notes, as well as many materials related to the city. found here.Porto · 89.3km from Pinhao

Vasco da Gama Bridge 🆚 Sports Park (Vasco da Gama Bridge) One of the longest bridges in Europe, 17.2 kilometers long. The bridge is located in the parish of Moscavide, about 10 kilometers northeast of Lisbon, part of the city of Loures, close to the Tagus River. On both sides of the bridge is a quiet modern community with a slow-paced atmosphere. It is also popular among locals because of its proximity to Lisbon Airport and the modern National Park (Parque das Nações); especially the sports park under the bridge, which is close to the water and has a large green space. In the evening, sports enthusiasts run on the overhead walkway from time to time, and there are sports figures everywhere on the tennis courts, padle courts and football fields.

Obidos, north of Lisbon, was once ruled by the Moors and ancient Rome, leaving behind many historical buildings. In the 12th century, the king at the time gave it to the queen because he loved it. After that, Obidos became a town inherited by successive queens. The Santa Maria Church in the town is the holy place where the king and queen got married. The cobblestone road spirals up and leads us to the city gate. The beautiful white-bottomed blue-flowered painted tiles are very eye-catching. Climb up the walls around the castle and you can see far away. The main street is full of souvenir shops, restaurants, and stalls selling Ginja. This brandy produced in Obidos is cherry wine served in chocolate cups. It costs 1 euro a cup. It has a strong fruity flavor and is mellow and delicious. Obidos is very popular with tourists because of its beautiful scenery.

There are old towns along the Douro River. Although they look a bit shabby at first glance, I really like the atmosphere of history that is a bit dilapidated. The old town is also colorful and well-arranged, and it looks even more lovely under the sunshine. There are many small shops in the old street where you can stroll around and buy some local specialties. There are also many scenic restaurants along the river where you can spend a very relaxing afternoon.

There are so many people. The bridge has two floors. The lower floor is mainly for traffic, and the upper floor has a large number of hikers and trams. You can stop to admire the Douro River and the buildings on both sides. The scenery is very good. There are railways and trams on the bridge, so you must pay attention to safety and be careful about your finances.

The Holy Spirit Church in Bodo is a blue and white porcelain tile building. It uses tiles to collage stories from the Bible. It is very creative and distinctive. It is very conspicuous at the corner and is also a photo spot. If you have the opportunity, you can come to Bodo. It is a very beautiful attraction!

There is a very famous building in Salamanca, the Shell Stand, which is famous because tens of thousands of shells are carved on the outer wall of the building. It looks densely packed, hence the name. It is also one of the most famous attractions in Salamanca, and you must come and see it.

The Baroque Library of the University of Coimbra can be said to be the best place in the entire University of Coimbra. It is also listed among the top ten most beautiful libraries in the world. It is magnificent and many of the building materials are wooden. There are three main halls, each with murals on the four continents, disciplines and related qualities. It is also the prototype of the library in the movie Harry Potter.
