Dongting Lake, anciently known as Yunmeng, Jiujiang and Heavy Lake, is located on the south bank of Jingjiang River in the middle of the Yangtze River, across Yueyang, Siam, Xiangyin, Wangcheng, Yiyang, Lijiang, Hanshou, Changde, Jinshi, Anxiang and Nanxian counties. The name of Dongting Lake began in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. It was named after Dongting Mountain in the Lake. The Songzi, Taiping, Dianchi Lake and the four mouths of the Yangtze River in the north of Dongting Hubei Province were injected into the Yangtze River by Yueyang City, the small tributaries of Xiang, Zi, Yuan, Yuan Sishui and Siluo River in the south and west. Dongting Lake was once known as "Babaili Dongting" in ancient times. In the late 1990s, according to the water conservancy department, there was an area of 2579.2 square kilometers; but it also had more than 1,300 square kilometers of floodway area in Xiang, Zi, Yuan, and Yuansishui and "Four mouths of the Yangtze River". Together, there are still 3879.2 square kilometers. The circumference of the lake basin is 803.2 kilometers, with a total volume of 22 billion cubic meters, of which 17.8 billion cubic meters of natural lakes and 4.2 billion cubic meters of river channels. Dongting Lake is an important storage lake in the Yangtze River basin, with strong flood storage capacity, which has made the Yangtze River flood risk countless times, and the Jianghan Plain and Wuhan three towns can safely cross the river. Dongting Lake is an important strategic place in history, the birthplace of Chinese traditional culture, and the lake area has many famous places. The historical sites represented by Yueyang Tower are important tourism and cultural resources. It is also the birthplace of traditional Chinese agriculture, a famous town of fish and rice, and the most important commodity grain and oil base, aquatic products and breeding base in Hunan Province and even the country.
