EscapeToSerenityWithLewis Three-Day Tour of Shijiazhuang: Zhengding Ancient City~Zhaozhou Bridge~Hebei Museum
Itinerary: Xiamen - Zhengding Airport in Shijiazhuang, Zhengding Ancient City, Zhaozhou Bridge Scenic Area, Berlin Zen Temple, Hebei Museum
Must-visit attractions: Zhengding Ancient City, Hebei Museum
Must-try delicacies: Donkey Burger, Hele Noodles, Beef Shaomai, White Sugar Cake
Accommodation recommendation: Homestays within the ancient city are economical and affordable
Practical Tips:
Zhengding Ancient City is highly recommended for Longxing Temple, it's simply breathtaking. Inside, there is the 'Goddess of Beauty of the East' as praised by Mr. Lu Xun, the Reclining Guanyin.
The Dabeige Pavilion houses a tall bronze statue of the Great Mercy Bodhisattva, known as 'Dabei Bodhisattva', standing 19.2 meters tall on a 2.2-meter-high Sumeru stone platform, the best-preserved and tallest bronze statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva.
It's recommended to buy tickets for Longxing Temple online for 44 yuan per person, which can save a few yuan. It is suggested to hire a guide for 130 yuan, and you can share the cost with other tourists, making it not expensive per person.
The ticket for Rongguofu is 36 yuan per person, and it's not that impressive after a stroll. However, as it's the filming location of the 1987 version of 'Dream of the Red Chamber', it's worth visiting for a check-in.
Kaiyuan Temple, Tianning Temple, Linji Temple, and Guanghui Temple are all good for check-ins and photos. The tickets are 7.5 yuan per person, except for Kaiyuan Temple, which is 10 yuan per person, and tickets are purchased on-site.
In the evening, you can climb up to Yanghe Tower, where the ticket is 3 yuan per person. The night view is very beautiful.
It's recommended to walk on the South City Wall, which has the 'Three Passes Majestic Town' plaque.
Zhaozhou Bridge Scenic Area is some distance from Zhengding Ancient City, and it's recommended to drive yourself or use Didi. The 'Zhao County One-Day Tour' mentioned online is not practical, as it requires 20 people to depart, and even on holidays like May 1st, they can't form a group. The Didi ride from Zhengding costs about 103 yuan for 2 people.
Near Zhaozhou Bridge, there is a temple called Berlin Zen Temple, which is worth a visit when in Zhao County.
The Hebei Museum is highly recommended, with national treasures such as the Changxin Palace Lantern and the Jade Suit Sewn with Gold Thread.
The Architectural Gem: Exploring the Charm of Zhaozhou Bridge
Zhaozhou Bridge, also known as Anji Bridge, is affectionately called the Great Stone Bridge by the locals. Among its many names, 'Zhaozhou Bridge' is undoubtedly the most well-known, with its fame largely owing to Mr. Mao Yisheng's masterpiece, the essay 'Zhaozhou Bridge,' which has drawn countless tourists due to its popularity as a primary school text.
Zhaozhou Bridge is located above the Xiaohe River south of Zhao County in Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province. Its name originates from the ancient appellation of Zhao County—Zhaozhou. The bridge was built in the second year of the Daye era of the Sui Dynasty (606 AD) by the craftsman Li Chun. It has not only witnessed a millennium of vicissitudes but is also the world's earliest, largest-span, and best-preserved single-arch stone bridge with open spandrel arches. In the spring of 1933, the renowned architect Liang Sicheng personally visited and surveyed the bridge, confirming that the Great Stone Bridge of Zhaozhou was indeed the Anji Bridge, a treasure of Chinese bridge architecture with a long history.
The preservation of ancient buildings is no easy feat, especially in China, where ancient structures were mostly made of wood, vulnerable to war, human disasters, and natural calamities. However, the ancient buildings that have withstood the test of time owe their survival to three main reasons. First, the building materials are durable, such as brick and stone constructions, including gates, tombs, brick pagodas, stone bridges, and city walls, which have endured the test of time. Second, the continuous practical use, exemplified by Zhaozhou Bridge, which, despite eight renovations since its construction, still carries out its mission of transportation; once a building loses its functionality, even as majestic as the Great Wall, it cannot avoid a fate of decline. Third, the lack of distinct dynastic colors, such as temple buildings, which are less affected by dynastic changes, thus able to traverse the river of history and survive to this day.
The most acclaimed historical site in Zhao County is none other than Zhaozhou Bridge. Besides, Yongtong Bridge, the Dhāraṇī Pillar, and other relics are also renowned in professional fields, but they may not be as eye-catching to the average tourist. Zhao County has deeply explored the cultural and tourism value of Zhaozhou Bridge, creating a large-scale scenic area around this ancient bridge, complete with an ancient bridge exhibition hall, a folk art stage, cultural and creative products, and local specialties, all readily available. During the Spring Festival, the area is particularly lively, brimming with a strong festive atmosphere. For a county to possess such a precious relic is indeed sufficient.
In Zhao County, there is also a mouthwatering specialty delicacy—donkey meat. Donkey meat restaurants are scattered throughout the streets and alleys, especially near the Dhāraṇī Pillar, where donkey meat shops are densely packed. We once tasted two jin of donkey meat at Zhang Guolao Meat Shop; although pricey at 70 yuan per jin, the taste was delicious and memorable. And a simple breakfast, costing only 6 yuan for two bowls of soybean curd and four fried dough sticks, was enough to leave us fully satisfied.
Many years ago, I learned about Zhaozhou Bridge in the elementary school textbook. It is the earliest preserved stone arch bridge in China. It was built in the Sui Dynasty and has a history of more than 1,400 years. Today's Zhaozhou Bridge has become an attraction with a ticket of 40 yuan, which is one of the most famous scenic spots in Shijiazhuang.
Zhaozhou Bridge, also known as Anji Bridge, is located on the Weihe River in Zhao County, Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province. The designer is Li Chun, a famous craftsman of the Sui Dynasty. However, there is not much record of Li Chun in history, except that he knows nothing about his construction of Zhaozhou Bridge. The
Sui Dynasty ended the rule of separation between the Northern and Southern Dynasties and once again completed China's reunification. At that time, Zhao County was the only place to go north and south. North Shangyu County went south to Luoyang. A Weihe River blocked traffic. The court decided to build a bridge on the Weihe River to end the inconvenient traffic situation. Li Chun was designed and built.
Zhaozhou Bridge is not big, with Zhaozhou Bridge as the core, and several other attractions have no special features. A new bridge next to Zhaozhou Bridge has long replaced the access function of Zhaozhou Bridge.
But at first glance, I saw Zhaozhou Bridge. There is not much surprise. It looks very ordinary. But 1400 years ago, this was definitely the highest achievement in the bridge industry. An open shoulder arch like this, Europe did not appear until the mid-19th century, more than 1200 years later than our country.
Zhengding Ancient City Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
Dragon Ascension Garden
Dragon Ascension Garden is a temple garden located at the last part of the Longxing Temple scenic area in Zhengding ancient city, and it is an attraction that was added in 2005.
There are multiple cultural heritages within Dragon Ascension Garden, including a Jin dynasty pagoda, Northern Dynasties stone statues, Yuan dynasty mural tombs, Ming dynasty Xu family archways, Ming dynasty Longquan well pavilions, as well as ancient steles, all of which are worth seeing.
Besides historical relics, Dragon Ascension Garden is also as beautiful as a park. The lake and mountains complement the pavilions, towers, bridges, and flowing water, with flowers, plants, and trees embellishing the scene. The garden is not large, but it has a profound ambiance.
This one article is enough! A two-day, one-night travel guide to Shijiazhuang
⭐So close and so beautiful, head to Hebei for the weekend! Shijiazhuang, as the capital of Hebei Province, has always been relatively unknown, but it is known as the city brought by train, with a profound cultural heritage and strong playability. The consumption is not high, and you can have a lot of fun in just two days and one night. Come and take a look with me!
⭐Accommodation: Hey, when you get to Shijiazhuang, let's put down our luggage and take a break. ❗It is recommended to stay near the Provincial Museum. The Provincial Museum is located in the center of Shijiazhuang, with plenty of food, fun, and convenient transportation nearby, and the accommodation is not expensive. This cost-performance ratio is loved
Day1
1️⃣Hebei Museum
Reservation: Search for Hebei Museum on the vx👸🏻 account to make a reservation. Important note❗Closed on Mondays. If you can't book online, you can get a ticket on-site with your ID card.
Exhibits: The essence is on the second floor of the south area, where the Hebei Museum reflects the profound cultural heritage and ethnic culture of the land of Yan and Zhao. At the same time, it is very educational, 🉑scan the code to see the introduction of the exhibits, and there are also AI videos to restore the history of tombs and dynasties.
Treasures of the museum: Changxin Palace Lantern, Wrong Gold Boshan Furnace, Liu Sheng's Gold-threaded Jade Clothing (all in the Mancheng Han Tomb exhibition hall on the 2nd floor)
2️⃣Shijiazhuang Restaurant: If you seriously visit the Hebei Museum, it might take a whole day, and for dining, I recommend the Shijiazhuang Restaurant next to the museum. The smoked meat pancake and Red Star buns are top specialties in the city, and there was a long queue when I went, with locals buying them by the big bagful. But personally, I still think the buns from Tianjin are tastier, to each their own
3️⃣In the evening, you can check out the CBD night view in our city, Wanlimiao Pedestrian Street (if you're lucky, you can see the internet-famous driving test dance), and Beiguo Shopping Mall, a huge mall with ten floors.
Day2
⭐Zhengding Ancient City: You can take a bus or taxi, which costs about 30r from the city center and takes about half an hour. The nine towers and eight temples of Zhengding Ancient City are really worth seeing!
Recommended travel route: Longxing Temple - Tianning Temple - Linji Temple - Guanghui Temple - City Wall (from north to south)
1️⃣Longxing Temple A must-visit
The cross-shaped Mani Hall is praised by Liang Sicheng as the pinnacle of art
The colorful suspended sculpture of Guanyin, called the Eastern Goddess of Beauty by Lu Xun
A dialogue across a thousand years, the clearly layered Ming dynasty murals
The earliest existing regular script stele inscription 'Longzang Temple Stele'
The two-meter-tall bronze Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin
2️⃣Tianning Temple Guanghui Temple Kaiyuan Temple Linji Temple
Each temple has a well-preserved, unique pagoda. They are Tianning Temple's Lingxiao Pagoda, Kaiyuan Temple's Sumi Pagoda, Guanghui Temple's Hua Pagoda, and Linji Temple's Ching Ling Pagoda. These temples are not as large as Longxing Temple, and you can see and take photos from the outside. If you want to go inside, it is recommended to buy an 80r joint ticket offline.
3️⃣Zhengding Ancient City Wall
Be sure to climb the city wall to watch the sunset and night view. The lights are usually turned on around 7:55 pm. There is also a lantern festival around the Lantern Festival, but it's very crowded.
4️⃣Zhengding Cuisine: Wuqi Road Noodle Board, Hao Family Ribs, Hele Noodles, Beef Covered Pancakes
Things to avoid:
1️⃣The original site of Zhaozhou Bridge is no longer there, and you can only see the newly built reinforced concrete bridge in recent years.
2️⃣The Rongguo Mansion in Zhengding Ancient City, which was built for the filming of the 1987 version of 'Dream of the Red Chamber', is sold separately. Personally, I feel that it is not worth visiting and is a place you will regret visiting.
Hebei & Shijiazhuang·Zhengding Ancient City
Shijiazhuang·Zhengding Ancient City
Address: Yanzhao South Street, Zhengding County, Shijiazhuang City
Opening Hours: All day
Attraction Tickets: Free for the ancient city
Zhengding was formerly known as 'Changshan', the hometown of the famous general Zhao Yun from the Three Kingdoms period. Historically, this place was a strategic location for defending the Central Plains, equipped with complete city defense facilities. The remaining city walls were built during the Ming Dynasty.
There are many Hanfu shops in the ancient city, with clothing + styling costing around 100 yuan. Each shop has different prices, and you can also experience the same hairpin flowers worn by the actress Zhao Liying (this is currently a very popular activity in the ancient city)
Baoding Weekend Day Trip - Zhengding Ancient City
Zhengding is really suitable for Baoding people to travel on weekends‼️
I'm sharing my travel tips with everyone✅
🚊Travel
1⃣️The mode of transportation we chose is the train! We bought tickets for the 7:02-8:21 Baoding—Zhengding and♻️19:51-21:06 Zhengding—Baoding trains
These two trains are just perfect for a day's play!
2⃣️Upon arriving at Zhengding station, I suggest taking a taxi directly to the Grand Buddha Temple (also known as Longxing Temple), don't go to Yong'an Gate first❌There's nothing there, and it's super far from the real attractions!
💟Sightseeing
1⃣️We didn't do much planning, our plan was a City walk, just strolling and browsing, following the signs to Longxing Temple! Longxing Temple requires a ticket🎫to enter - 50 yuan for adults and 25 for students. My rating is: it's worth the price, 🈶️photos 3-11 are all taken by me inside Longxing Temple, Longxing Temple is known as the foremost temple outside of Beijing for good reason, you can learn about its historical background before you go, it makes the visit more interesting haha!
2⃣️I think Zhongshan Road is a scenery itself! You'll see the super photogenic red walls, you'll see green buses shuttling through the tree-lined avenues...
3⃣️Zhengding Ancient City South Gate Wall
It looks especially beautiful when the lights are on at night, standing on the wall you can overlook the entire panorama of Zhengding Ancient City!
🥘Food
1⃣️After visiting Longxing Temple, it was time for lunch, we chose the Wang's Shaomai across the street for lunch, mainly ordering some local specialties - Zhengding collapsed liver, hot cut meatballs, hohhot noodles, as well as cold dishes and millet soup.
I think the taste is okay, you can try the local flavors. Also, I highly recommend the millet soup! Super delicious!!!
2⃣️Jar Oven Baked Buns
Along the way, you'll encounter many jar oven baked bun shops, I think you can just pick any! Crispy and delicious!
3⃣️Romanlin
Do Zhengding people love this ice cream shop, I came across many on one street! But the aesthetic is really high, I personally recommend mint and chocolate flavors, tiramisu and rum are too sweet‼️
⚠️⚠️⚠️We finished touring around seven o'clock, in the morning after getting off the train we saw a small commodity market next to the station, so we decided to check it out in the evening, and then! We discovered a new world‼️There was a huge night market, the biggest I've ever seen, with all kinds of snacks available. After seeing this night market, I feel like the night markets I've been to before are not worth mentioning😭 No exaggeration, you'll know once you've been there!
