Accommodation: Most of the inns are stilted buildings facing the Wujiang River, with restaurants on the lower level and accommodations on the upper level. We chose a stilted building with a balcony, where we could sit and watch the Wujiang River flow right in front of us. The room was simple but very clean. Note that there are slopes and steps in the ancient town, so it is best not to bring suitcases and use backpacks instead. Cuisine: Many restaurants in Gongtan serve spicy pepper fish, and we had a delicious one at our innkeeper's place. We also tried noodles and ice powder at another shop, which were not particularly tasty, but the shop owners were honest, and the pine nut cakes we encountered were quite good. 🚫The not-so-good: Although the place is lovely, there were some negative experiences. The Wujiang River cruise boat took an hour to board, and after boarding, they said there would be a performance, but it turned out to be a live calligraphy auction on the boat. There are two options: a small train (20 yuan/person) and a bus (10 yuan/person). Taking the small train to Youzhou Ancient City Q, the journey to the idyllic Peach Blossom Spring begins. In the ancient city's streets, homestays are everywhere, and recently, renting costumes for photo shoots has become particularly popular. Passing through the ancient city, one arrives at the Peach Blossom Spring described by Tao Yuanming. During the Qingming Festival, the peach blossoms have already fallen, with only a few remaining on the trees. Perhaps the expectations were too high, and seeing this scene, it's inevitable to feel a bit disappointed. Once you arrive in Gongtan, make sure you get onto cruise and see the life along the river in ancient times. There are caves and hidden dwellings if you look into the mountain side. It is such a mystery how they’ve managed to live with the rise and fall of the river. Once night hits, go for a wonderful bbq or try the local cuisine. Everything is well budgeted and you might be able to get some souvenirs along the ancient streets built into the landscape. Head down to the river board walk and stroll along the shore, this is how memories are built.
