2025 Yoshimi Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in April)

Yoshimi Hyakuana A group of cave tombs built between the end of the 6th century and the late 7th century, located at 327 Kitayoshimi, Yoshimi-cho, Hiki-gun, Saitama Prefecture. It was designated as a national historic site in 1923. The nearest station is JR Higashimatsuyama Station, about a 15-minute walk away. To get there by bus, take the Kawagoe Sightseeing Bus "To the License Center" from Higashimatsuyama Station for about 5 minutes, get off at "Hyakuana Iriguchi" and walk for about 5 minutes, or take the Kawagoe Sightseeing Bus "To Higashimatsuyama Station" for about 25 minutes, get off at "Hyakuana Iriguchi" and walk for about 5 minutes. You can get up close and personal with the caves themselves, and although the remains of the underground munitions factory are currently closed for inspection and research, you can see them from the outside. Iwamuro Kannon Iwamuro Kannon is located at 309 Kitayoshimi, Yoshimi-cho, Hiki-gun, Saitama Prefecture, and is said to have been built between 810 and 824. Its official name is Iwamuro-san Ryusei-in. As you proceed from the hall, there is a cliff with chains attached to it on the left, and if you climb up the chains, you will come across a hole just big enough for a person to pass through while crouching. This is called "passing through the womb" and is said to grant safe childbirth.

Iwadono-san Anraku-ji Temple (Yoshimi Kannon) A temple located at 374 Gosho, Yoshimi-machi, Hiki-gun, Saitama Prefecture, founded in 806. It seems you can walk there from a nearby bus stop, so we walked there from Higashimatsuyama, which took about an hour. The main hall, three-story pagoda, and Niomon gate are designated cultural properties of Saitama Prefecture, and the Nio statues are designated cultural properties of Yoshimi-machi.

Kuroiwa Cave Tombs This group of cave tombs in Yoshimi-machi, Hiki-gun, Saitama Prefecture was designated as a historic site by Saitama Prefecture in 1925. It is located on the north side of Lake Haccho, but the surrounding vegetation made it impossible to get close, so I viewed it from the sidewalk in the park. It seems that very little research has been done, so I wondered whether it would remain natural, and whether various pottery and other things would be found if it were researched. #historicalsite

Yoshimi Hyakuana is a mountain full of holes in Yoshimi Town, Saitama Prefecture. These holes were once the home of Koropokkuru, but after investigation, it was discovered that they were actually a group of cave tombs from the Kofun period over 1,400 years ago. They are now designated as a national historic site. Saitama is actually a kingdom of ancient tombs, but these cave tombs are rare and are said to be one of the largest in the country. The "100 holes" in Yoshimi Hyakuana means "that many," and there are actually 219 holes. During the Meiji period, a researcher from the University of Tokyo came to investigate and took home a large number of excavated items, including grave goods, which have not been returned since. The few grave goods that remain are currently on display at Osawa Shoten on the premises. It is also a place where an underground munitions factory was built during World War II. Until a few years ago, it was possible to visit inside, but a collapse was discovered in part of the passageway, and since then, it has been off-limits. The Yoshimi Hyakuana is actually privately owned, and the owner of the mountain is Mr. Osawa, the owner of Osawa Shoten. He is appealing to the national and local governments to close off only the collapsed part of the passageway and open the rest, but it is a nationally designated historic site, and due to the complicated procedures, it will take time. The underground factory is a natural air conditioner, and when you stand in front of the entrance, a cool breeze blows gently from underground. Hatcho Lake Park This park is located at 1080 Kuroiwa, Yoshimi-cho, Hiki-gun, Saitama Prefecture, and consists of an artificial lake (Hatcho Lake) and hilly areas created for agriculture. There were cats here and there. The area around the lake is well maintained and has walking and running courses. It can be accessed by car or bus, but I walked there from Higashimatsuyama for about an hour and 15 minutes. There were many cars on the road, but few pedestrians, and the occasional bicycle.
