Besides Taohuatan, what else does Xuancheng have? A guide to tell you
First of all, we need to know what kind of place we’re going to. Xuancheng is located in southeastern Anhui. It might not be as famous as Huangshan, but it’s definitely a hidden gem. To put it simply, Li Bai praised it countless times. The line “Looking at each other, we never tire; only Mount Jingtai” refers to Mount Jingtai in Xuancheng. Also, “The water of Taohuatan is a thousand feet deep, but not as deep as Wang Lun’s friendship when he sent me off”—Taohuatan is also in Xuancheng. So, if you like a place with a bit of cultural flavor and want peaceful mountains and waters without crowds, this is the right spot.
How to arrange your itinerary? (Recommended 2-3 days)
Day 1: Mount Jingtai + Xie Tiao Tower + City Stroll
· Morning: Head to the “Poetry Mountain” — Mount Jingtai
Start from downtown Xuancheng in the morning; Mount Jingtai is very close. The mountain isn’t high, so climbing it isn’t tiring, making it perfect for a relaxed trip start. Don’t think of it as a steep mountain climb; we’re mainly here to feel the artistic conception. Walk slowly along the stone steps, surrounded by greenery. Recall Li Bai’s poems in your mind, stop by places like “Cuiyun Temple” and “Guangjiao Temple,” and you’ll feel a connection with poets from centuries ago. The summit offers a great view overlooking the whole Xuancheng, instantly lifting your spirits.
· Afternoon: Cultural treats in the city — Xie Tiao Tower and China Alligator Lake
After descending and having lunch, visit “Xie Tiao Tower” in the city. This tower commemorates another poet, Xie Tiao, and is known as one of the “Four Famous Towers of Jiangnan” (though it’s relatively low-key). Climb the tower to enjoy the scenery and learn some history, wrapping up your morning “poetry journey.”
If you’re interested in natural wonders, you can also visit “China Alligator Lake” (Yangtze Alligator Breeding Research Center). This isn’t an ordinary zoo; it’s dedicated to protecting and breeding China’s “living fossil,” the Yangtze alligator. Watching these adorable and precious creatures basking by the pond is quite fascinating.
· Evening: Dive into the old streets for delicious food
Evening is reserved for Xuancheng’s old streets! I recommend visiting “Beimen Old Street” or “Zhuangyuan Old Street.” With bluestone paths, white walls, black tiles, and lanterns lit up, the atmosphere is instantly immersive. Both sides are lined with various snack shops and specialty stores, so your food exploration journey can begin!
Day 2: Taohuatan + Chaji Ancient Town (this route is a bit far, self-driving or chartered car recommended)
· All day: Dream back to the poetic and picturesque ancient town
On the second day, we’ll go a bit farther to Jing County. First, visit the famous “Taohuatan.” Honestly, the water might not be as deep as Li Bai described, but the poetic mood remains. Take a small ferry to the opposite shore, stop by “Huaixian Pavilion” and “Tage’an Pavilion,” and imagine the scene when Li Bai and Wang Lun drank and said farewell here. That feeling of traveling through history is amazing.
· Afternoon: Step into a living ancient town — Chaji
Not far from Taohuatan is “Chaji Ancient Town.” I highly recommend this place! It’s much more original and less commercialized than some other ancient towns. A creek runs through the town, many old stone bridges connect both sides, and residents still live there. Wander freely through the intricate stone-paved alleys, watch elders chatting at their doorsteps, and see artists and students sketching by the river. Time slows down here. The ancient architecture is especially worth seeing, with carved beams and painted rafters full of detail. Be sure to climb to the town’s high point to see the black-tiled roofs of the entire ancient town — the view is stunning.
Day 3: Explore Taiji Cave or head home
If you have extra time, you can visit “Taiji Cave” in Guangde City. It’s a very large natural karst cave, known as the “Number One Cave in Southeast China.” Inside, the stalactites are bizarre and varied. You can take a boat ride on the underground river inside the cave for a unique experience. If time is tight, you can sleep in on the third day, buy some local specialties, and head home satisfied.
Foodie Guide
When you arrive in Xuancheng, don’t let your mouth rest!
· Hu’s Premium Hotpot: This dish is amazing, using a big pot layered with dried bamboo shoots, meat chunks, tofu puffs, and more, slowly simmered over low heat. The flavor is rich and aromatic—definitely a must-try!
· Jing County Pickled Vegetables: Don’t confuse this with the usual cilantro. It’s a special pickle made from tall-stemmed Chinese cabbage, crispy and refreshing, very appetizing.
· Shuiyang Three Treasures: Mainly duck feet buns, duck wings, and Shuiyang dried tofu. They have a unique flavor and are great as snacks with drinks.
· Bamboo Shoots and Tea: Xuancheng has abundant bamboo, and dishes made with bamboo shoots are delicious. Also, this area produces two of China’s top ten famous teas, “Yongxi Huoqing” and “Jingtai Lv Xue.” Tea lovers can bring some back home.
Helpful Tips
1. Transportation: Xuancheng has a high-speed rail station, so major transport is convenient. But attractions like Taohuatan and Chaji are scattered, so it’s best to self-drive or hire a local car or carpool for more flexible timing.
2. Accommodation: You can stay in downtown Xuancheng or experience a homestay in Chaji Ancient Town. It’s especially quiet at night and lets you feel the unique charm of the ancient town.
3. Pace: Don’t rush when visiting Xuancheng. Its charm lies in leisure and poetry. Walk slowly, look slowly, and you’ll truly savor its flavor.
