There are two routes in the Wieliczka Salt Mine: tourist route and miner route. Since we can see the underground church, we chose the tourist route. The salt mine tour was really popular. There were crowds of people early in the morning but the queues were still orderly. The guided tours were available in different languages ​​and tickets could be purchased in advance on the official website, but we wanted to be more casual so we decided to buy tickets on site. The ticket office also had different languages. After buying the English tour, we found that the Polish version was cheaper. I could only think that it was the English translation fee. Although the English was poor, I could still understand it a little. A large amount of salt resources were discovered in Wieliczka in the 13th century. It is one of the oldest salt mines in the world. It was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1978. After mining was stopped in 1996, it was transformed into a tourist route and opened to the public. The salt mine is large and deep, with a total of 9 floors from top to bottom. The tunnels are densely packed and can be called a maze. There are also churches and restaurants inside, but only a small part of it is actually visited. The tour guide, wearing a mining uniform, led everyone down hundreds of steps deep into the ground. Many tunnel walls were made of ores with a high salt content, and even had crystallized salt flowers. As we walked, he introduced the history of the mine and the operating tools at each stage, allowing us to get a glimpse into the world of the miners back then. The most eye-catching underground church on the tour route is St. Kinga’s Chapel, which was built exclusively for the miners who worked and lived underground. The Wieliczka Salt Mine is located near Krakow, about a 20-minute train ride from the city center. Tickets can be purchased directly from the staff on the train or at ticket machines, making it very simple and convenient. There are two routes for visiting the salt mine: the Tourist Route and the Miners' Route. Each route takes about 3 hours. Since I was very interested in both routes, I decided to take the Tourist Route in the morning, have lunch at the underground salt mine restaurant, and then experience being a miner in the afternoon. It was a full day of in-depth exploration of the salt mine. The entire tour is guided, and although there are many stairs to climb, the interior of the salt mine is truly exquisite. The highlight of the Tourist Route, St. Kinga's Chapel, is absolutely stunning! It's amazing! The only downside is that there are too many tourists, and the visit time is limited. It would be better if we could stay a bit longer! The miner experience is also very interesting. The guide's explanations are very detailed, and there are various small activities that make participants feel more like real miners. It's definitely worth experiencing. This is definitely one of the must-visit attractions when traveling to Krakow!
