2025 Tikal Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in June)

If you're craving a destination that combines raw nature, ancient history, and authentic culture — Guatemala is a treasure waiting to be discovered. My trip was filled with adrenaline, beauty, and deep wonder. Here’s a taste of what made it unforgettable: --- Volcano Hiking: Fire & Stars in the Sky The highlight of the trip? Hiking Volcán Acatenango. It’s a challenging overnight trek, but 100% worth it. From our base camp at 3,600 meters, we had a front-row seat to Volcán Fuego, which erupts dramatically every 15–20 minutes — lava bursts lighting up the night sky. We camped above the clouds and watched sunrise over a volcano-studded horizon. Epic doesn’t even begin to describe it. Tip: Bring warm layers — it gets very cold at night! --- Tikal – Lost City of the Maya In the northern jungles of Petén lies Tikal, one of the most important archaeological sites of the Maya world. Towering pyramids rise above the rainforest canopy, and howler monkeys echo through the trees. We climbed Temple IV at sunrise — just imagine mist rising over ancient ruins while toucans fly past. It's mysterious, powerful, and humbling. Tip: Go with a guide — the stories behind the temples are mind-blowing. --- Bonus Stops: Lake Atitlán: A peaceful crater lake surrounded by volcanoes and traditional Mayan villages. Great for kayaking, yoga, and shopping for textiles. Antigua Guatemala: A charming colonial town with cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and volcano views at every turn. Tikal is one of the largest urban ruins of the Mayan civilization, spread across the dense jungles of northern Guatemala, and was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. It is one of the few ruins that have both cultural and natural heritage values. The pyramids and temples towering in the jungle convey the splendor of the ancient Maya to the present day.   🏛️ Attractions of the spot • The central city of the Mayan civilization: It flourished from the 6th century BC to the 9th century AD, and is said to have had more than 60,000 people at its peak.  • Rich natural environment: Tikal National Park is covered with 221 km2 of tropical rainforest, and is home to a variety of wild animals such as jaguars and monkeys. • Filming location: The rebel base scene in the movie "Star Wars Episode IV" was filmed from the top of Temple IV. 🌟 Recommended points • Gran Plaza: The center of the ruins, a square surrounded by Temple I (Temple of the Jaguar) and Temple II (Temple of the Mask).  • Temple I (Temple of the Jaguar): A 47m-high temple with a jaguar sculpture on the top.  • Temple IV (Temple of the Two-Headed Serpent): The largest temple in Tikal, about 65m high, from the top you can see the jungle and other temples.  • Lost World (Mundo Perdido): This is the area where the oldest buildings are gathered, and you can feel the transition of the eras.  📍 Address Tikal National Park, Petén, Guatemala 🕒 Opening hours • Opening hours: Daily 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM • Special tours: Sunrise and sunset tours require additional fees. 🚗 Access •Nearest city: Flores •Transportation: From Flores to Tikal, it takes about an hour and a half by shuttle bus. Many accommodations and tour companies arrange shuttle buses. •Airport: The nearest airport is Mundo Maya International Airport, about a 10-minute drive from Flores city. The Tikal ruins are a worthwhile spot to visit, combining the magnificent history of the ancient Mayan civilization with abundant nature. For those who haven’t started researching on Guatemala yet Tikal is one of the better preserved large scale Mayan sites. I will let you do the research but I’d just like to discuss a little on the strategy for Tikal. There are generally 3 product offerings out there, the sunrise hike (usually the guides wake you up at 3am), the regular day time experience, the sunset experience. I cannot speak to your own stamina on whether you want to be up at 3 am. but re sunrise there’s a few things worth bearing in mind 1) you get to beat the people to it before the hoards of tourists arrive (nothing spoils a pyramid picture more than having tourists on it), but 2) Tikal is on lowland Guatemala, it heats up very quickly by around 10 or 11am 3) you want to see your share of wildlife especially birds during your tour, and it’s best in the morning and 4) transportation: if you so decide to fly back from Flores to Guatemala City do remember TAG airlines have a rather patchy record in the event your flights are delayed or cancelled you want to have some room to be moved to your next flight. In either way the sunrise is awesome enough. The real cost here is you pay 150 quetzals (ie 150 Hong Kong dollars) more to do the sunrise experience vs the daytime experience. The second thing you want to think about is what guides to hire. Assuming you are going after those posted on getyourguide/Viator I do realise the more expensive ones (instead of the HKD373.00 one) tend to work a little more diligently in explanation. So be mindful of just how efficient the pricing system is. Finally as to leaving Tikal. It depends on who you are. Some people like to take the bus from Flores to Guatemala City. Very cheap like a hundred or two hundred quetzals max. 12 hour ride. Depending on which bus company you are taking the bus may end up dropping you off at zone one of Guatemala City which at night may not be perfectly safe. Of course that could be resolved if you take the bus to Antigua instead and make that your next stop. Otherwise flights from Flores are some one thousand hkd with luggage and hassle free. But as in everything in Guatemala you don’t want to have a back to back schedule as flight delays and accidents simply happen. Always budget for some flexibility. Enough said. Happy planning

"Tikal", the ruins of the ancient Mayan civilization, lying in the jungle of Guatemala It is said to have flourished as the political and economic center of the ancient Maya from the 4th to 9th centuries AD, and is one of the largest World Heritage sites among Mayan ruins. The temples that represent Tikal are the pair of step pyramid temples called Temple 1 and Temple 2. It looks small in the photo, but Temple 1 is 47 meters high, and when you stand on the observation deck, it is quite high and your legs will shake. (By the way, you have to climb a long, long staircase to get there) *It seems that you cannot climb to the top at present due to the protection of the ruins. Tika Tikal is dotted with temple ruins deep in the jungle, Each one of them pokes out of the jungle, so if you climb to the top you can get a panoramic view of the jungle. However, there are no handrails and it is quite steep, so climb at your own risk. The ruins seen from above are truly an ancient city buried in the jungle, and they exude a romantic atmosphere. As an aside, Tikal is located in a humid jungle, so there are a lot of mosquitoes. Mosquito swarms like mosquito swarms will swarm you, so insect repellent spray is a must. #myhiddengems During my summer vacation, I had the chance to explore Tikal National Park in Guatemala, and it was an incredible adventure. Located deep in the jungle, Tikal is one of the most impressive Mayan ruins I’ve ever seen. The entrance fee was 150 GTQ, and it was well worth it for the chance to wander among these ancient ruins surrounded by lush greenery. Climbing the temples, especially Temple IV, provided breathtaking views of the dense rainforest and other ancient structures peeking through the canopy. The sheer scale and history of the site are awe-inspiring. I highly recommend a guided tour to fully appreciate the historical context and spot wildlife like howler monkeys and toucans. Nearby, the town of Flores offers charming lakeside views and a great spot to relax after a day of exploring. If you have a bucket list, I highly recommended Tikal National Park to be on your list. The Mayan temple complex in #Tikal was the shooting location of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. It was the backdrop of the rebel base on planet YAVIN 4 seen towards the end of the movie. Despite of the fact that only 15% of the city has been excavated. It’s still breathtaking. The whole ‘city’ was enveloped by jungle since the Mayan abandoned it in 900 A.D.. It was only rediscovered in 1848. I did the sunrise tour and it was worth the effort of getting up at 3am to be at the site at 4.30am when it was quiet and dark, adding that mysterious feeling while we made our way to the top of one of the temples. During that one hour of wait, everyone was holding the breath in the dark, I could only hear the birds singing their morning rhymes. When the sun rises, the top of the temples just revealed in front of you, which was like the veil being removed and unbelievable structures suddenly appeared at dawn. Apart from the Mayan history and architecture, I was also surprised to see so many different species of bird (there are more than 500 of them but I only saw five!), animals and plants. This trip is definitely top three of my ‘must seen’ list.
