Self-Guided Adventure in Tateyama Kurobe: An Immersive Journey through Stunning Landscapes
We embarked on a self-guided trip to Tateyama Kurobe in Japan, traversing the misty mountain regions at dawn. Our excitement grew with the increasing altitude. Upon arrival, the magnificent Tateyama came into view, its peaks covered in early autumn foliage, resembling a natural painting.
We walked along the Kurobe Dam, where the clear water mirrored the surrounding mountains, creating a picturesque scene. As we ascended by cable car, the unfolding scenery intertwined with the autumn leaves, presenting a breathtaking view. At higher altitudes, the distant Kurobe Lake appeared like a green gem, quietly nestled among the mountains.
Throughout the journey, we frequently paused to take deep breaths of the fresh mountain air, savoring the grandeur and tranquility of nature. The freedom of self-guided travel allowed us to explore at our own pace, without the rush, simply to immerse ourselves in the indescribable beauty.

Catching Snow in Late April
Snow mountain in late April? That's not impossible. You just have to book a flight to Japan. Have you ever heard about Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in Toyama Prefecture? Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a stunning route in every season, through Mount Tateyama in the Northern Alps and traversed by various types of transportation such as cable cars, trolley buses, and ropeways. It's ussually started open in mid of April when the snow is still fresh and thick. Eventhough it's already Spring season in throughout Japan, but if you're planning to go to Tateyama Alpine Route, you have to prepare your winter coat. As the weather is still too cold. When I've been there, it was -2ºC, meanwhile the weather in Tokyo was about 16ºC. The breathtaking view will makes you don't want to leave this place.

This is the kurobe dam, one small part of the Kurobe Tateyama Alpine route. It is the first station if you are starting from Nagano side. You can take the bus from shinano omachi station to the Ogizawa station and from there, you have to take a tunnel bus to the dam. This Alpine route is only open during certain periods of the year, they will only start to release the water from the dam in around June. Unfortunately, I went a little too early 🥲 Nevertheless, it was still beautiful 😍

This is the snow wall seen along the kurobe Tateyama alpine route. You can enjoy the Japanese snowy mountain alps and see how high the snow walls are. It was beautiful. But be sure to wear sunglasses as the snow is so white that it blinds you. 🤣 You can travel either from Matsumoto (Nagano prefecture) to Toyama or the other way round or a round trip to the highest point and back to where you came from in a day. I would suggest people to but the Alpine takayama Matsumoto area pass as it includes all the transport required for the kurobe alpine route which could cost quite a bit.

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route
I bought a local 2 days 1 night tour and went there with my 6yo daughter. The tour was travelling East direction, from Tateyama Station to Ogizawa Station.
We noticed that there is lesser crowd if u start from Ogizawa to Tateyama.
During this 2-day coach trip, we wander past traditional Japanese farmhouses in World Heritage–listed Shirakawago village and stroll the mountain town of Hida Takayama, aka Little Kyoto.
We started from :
1. Tateyama Cable Car (7 mins )
2. Bijodaira
3. Tateyama Highland Bus (30 mins) (Shomyo Falls can be seen from the bus)
4. Murodo (lunch, stroll, experience the snow wall)
5. Tateyama Tunnel Trolley Bus (10 mins)
6. Daikanbo (the observation deck atop the station or enjoy the view from the second floor)
7. Tateyama Ropeway (7 mins)
8. Kurobe Cable Car (5 mins)
9. Kurobe Dam sightseeing
10. Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus (16 mins)
11. Ogizawa Station. 1433m above sea level.
12. The end of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.
We took 5 hrs to complete the whole route from Tateyama Station to Ogizawa Station.
The snow wall was by far the highlight though all the other points were very beautiful.
The ropeway with 360 degree views of the snow clad mountains on all sides was a beauty.
I would highly recommend this to everyone visiting Japan, and especially in April when the snow wall is at its highest point.
We wish that we have more time at the Murodo as my daughter loves playing with snow and the walk along the snow wall was very amazing.

KUROBE DAM ALPINE ROUTE JAPAN
it was constructed between 1956 and 1963. it makes your ayes blow to see the view up there.
for me it was wonderful experience cause I never seen anything like that. but there’s a thing to get up there, you have to take your steps up to 200 stairs but once you got there it will be worthies.
to get there from tokyo you have to take the train to nagano and from nagano get the bus to ogizawa station then you will get your alpine route ticket. the prices for round trip all the way to murodo station is ¥9000 and bus from ogizawa from nagano return about ¥4800
I will recommend you to continue to the other side.

Midagahara Hotel At Tateyama
Staying around Tateyama especially at the top of Mount Tate in Japan can be quite expensive. A cheaper recommendable option is to stay right at thr base of the mountain where one is the Midagahara Hotel which is only an approximately 15-20mins drive up to the peak.
Midagahara Hotel is located at 1900m above sea level and can be really chilly at night and quote foggy in the morning but this is where staying in the mountains has its excitement where you are able to enjoy the quietness, the nature and this is also where most travellers stay due to its price friendly as compared to the peak. Also, this place is located near the murodo trolley bus station which makes this also a suitable location to stay.

The Kurobe Dam On The Kurobe River
Japan has many picture perfect spots located on the North and south island making this one of the instaworthy photo trip destinations for couples and families! One place that you have to visit especially if you have the car is to head to the Kurobe Dam located at Ashikuraji, Tateyama, Nakaniikawa District, Toyama 930-1406.
Although this isn't the biggest dam in Japan, but this place promises an amazing view from the 186m dam overlooking the beautiful lake where you have to climb a long flight of stairs. There is also a memorial to remember the 100 over people who lost their life while building the dam.
It is just amazing how in the 1900s such a magnificent dam is being built without the use of our modern machineries.

Fall foliage viewing in Late October at Kurobe Dam
Travelling the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in late October allows you to see the fall foliage color at its peak in Ogizawa and Kurobe dam areas.
Although the route is most famous for its gigantic snow wall (available for sightseeing in Spring - early Summer), Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is also a great place for fall foliage viewing.

A Magical Experience at Tateyama Kurobe
Tateyama Kurobe is the nickname for the 'Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route,' a road connecting 'Tateyama' Station in Tateyama Town, Toyama Prefecture, and 'Ogizawa' Station in Omachi City, Nagano Prefecture.
The route is 37.2 kilometers long, with the highest point at an altitude of 2,450 meters and a maximum elevation difference of 2,000 meters. It is a famous mountain sightseeing route representing Japan and even the world. It is open to tourists for climbing from mid-April to mid-November each year.
This was my first time visiting here. My friends and I chose to go at the end of October, but unfortunately, the weather was abnormal this year. It was too hot, and we couldn't see the autumn leaves.

Trip to Toyama 🇯🇵
It was a trip to Toyama, Japan. When I visited Toyama, I discovered that this charming city offers a mix of stunning natural beauty, cultural experiences, and delicious local cuisine.
I began my exploration at Toyama Castle Park, a beautiful historical site right in the city center. The reconstructed castle offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's feudal past, and the surrounding park is perfect for a leisurely stroll.
📍Honmaru, Toyama, 930-0081
💰* ¥210
I also visited the Toyama Glass Art Museum. The architecture alone is worth the visit, but the real highlight is the collection of contemporary glass artworks, which is simply stunning. The exhibits are beautifully curated, offering a modern contrast to the historical castle 🙌🙌🙌
📍5-1 Nishicho, Toyama, 930-0062
💰 ¥800
After exploring, I had lunch at Sushi Dai Toyama, a fantastic place to try some of the freshest sushi 🍣 I've ever had. I would suggest trying their Masu-no-sushi, a type of pressed trout sushi that Toyama is famous for. The flavors are delicate and fresh, perfectly paired with the local sake 🍵
📍1-220 Sougawa, Toyama, 930-0083
💰 Around ¥3,000
I took a day trip to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. This is a must-do if you're in Toyama! The scenic journey through the Japanese Alps is breathtaking, with highlights like the majestic Kurobe Dam and the incredible snow walls in spring 😍 I’d recommend starting early in the morning to make the most of the day.
📍Tateyama Station, 68 Ashikuraji, Tateyama, Nakaniikawa District, Toyama 930-1405
💰Varies (around ¥10,000 for a full pass)
After a day of adventure, I dined at Minamoto Shokudo, a cozy local eatery that serves Toyama's famed white shrimp tempura. The crispy tempura with a side of rice and miso soup was comforting after a long day, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming.
📍3-1, Minami-cho, Toyama, 930-0087
💰 Around ¥2,000
I also visited the Ishiuchi Soba Village, a great spot to experience local culture and enjoy hand-made soba noodles. Watching the noodles being made from scratch was a treat, and the flavor was wonderfully earthy and chewy.
📍Ishiuchi, Toyama, 930-0835
💰 Soba set meal around ¥1,500
Last but not least, I stopped by Café Musetti, a lovely café in Toyama Station that serves delightful pastries and tea. It's a great place to relax, people-watch, and soak in the last few hours in this beautiful city.

The Melting Snow of Kurobe Lake in April: A Stunning Interplay of Ice and Water
In April, as spring approaches, Kurobe Lake unveils a magnificent scene of melting ice and snow. The lake is still surrounded by the lingering snow on the high mountains, creating a breathtaking natural painting where snow-covered peaks reflect on the clear lake surface.
As the season transitions into spring, the ice gradually melts, and the lake's surface begins to reveal a deep blue hue, resembling a jade lying quietly among the snow-capped mountains. The lake acts like a mirror of nature, reflecting the surrounding peaks and the azure sky, presenting a dreamy interplay of ice and water.
Kurobe Lake in April embodies the purity and whiteness of winter while hinting at the vitality of the coming spring. The thick snow still clings to the mountain slopes, contrasting sharply with the lake's surface. This unique scenery can only be appreciated for a short period in spring. Visitors strolling along the lakeside can feel the refreshing air brought by the melting snow and admire this beautiful transitional moment in nature.
Kurobe Lake in April is not only a paradise for snow enthusiasts but also an ideal spot for photographers. Here, you can capture the moment of melting ice, the shimmering lake water, and the pristine snow, as if you are in a serene and majestic ink painting.

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route
Just wanted to share my recent experience traveling the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route from Tateyama to Kurobe Dam! It was an incredible journey through the stunning Japanese Alps, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable adventure.
Here's a quick rundown of my trip:
Transportation: There's no direct route, but it's a scenic combination of buses, cable cars, and a trolleybus. I took the bus from Bijodaira Station to Murodo Station, then another bus to Daikanbo Station. From there, I hopped on the cable car to Kurobedaira Station and walked a short distance to the Kurobe Dam itself.
Time: Allow around 3-4 hours or more for the entire trip, including transfers.
Cost: Tickets can vary depending on the season, but expect to pay around ¥3,000-¥4,800 for the one-way journey (roughly $25-$40 USD). Consider purchasing a Tateyama Kurobe Alpen Pass for a discount.
Highlights: The views are absolutely breathtaking! If you're traveling during spring, you won't want to miss the famous Tateyama Snow Corridor. Murodo Station, the highest point on the route, offers stunning panoramic views and unique alpine flora.
Tips:
Check the season: The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is typically open from mid-April to late November, with peak season being spring for the snow corridor. Make sure to check the official website for the latest opening dates and any closures due to weather [Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route].
Plan your trip: Research timetables and purchase tickets in advance, especially during peak season.
Dress for the weather: Mountain weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers and be prepared for anything.
Enjoy the ride: Sit back, relax, and take in the incredible scenery.
If you're planning a trip to Japan, I highly recommend adding the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route to your itinerary. It's a truly unique experience that you won't forget!

My trip to Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route was an unforgettable adventure! The scenic views were breathtaking, and the unique transportation modes, like the electric bus and ropeway, added to the excitement. The snow wall, reaching up to 20 meters high, was a highlight. I appreciated the efficiency of the Tateyama Pass, which streamlined my journey from Shinano Omachi to Toyama. The pass also included baggage forwarding, a convenient bonus. While the route wasn't cheap, the experience was priceless. I savored every moment, from the stunning vistas to the charming towns. Don't miss this incredible journey! Tips: book your pass online, enjoy the views at each stop, and pack snacks. Sunblock is a must, even on a chilly day. A once-in-a-lifetime experience awaits – embark on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route!

The 20-meter-tall snow walls that are only open for two months each year are truly astonishing
Such a breathtaking spectacle is only available for two months each year. This is the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in the Hokuriku region of central Japan, which I consider even more worth visiting than Mount Fuji. It has been on my wish list for countless years, and this year I finally got to check it off.
Despite being open for only a few short months each year, its popularity never wanes. The Snow Wall, which I find most enchanting, is only open for two months each year.
📆Opening season: April 15th to June 15th
Now, follow me to experience Japan's Alps, and witness the stunning beauty where the azure sky meets the pure white snow walls!
1️⃣The Snow Wall
Known for its towering white walls, it is also called the Great Snow Valley. The highest record is a 20-meter-tall snow wall that can only be seen in April and May. It is also a rare sight in other places.
When I visited this year, the highest was 14 meters. You can sit on a bus and pass through the snow walls of the Great Snow Valley, or you can stroll between the snow walls (about 200-300 meters long), and experience the unique joy amidst the pure white snow.
2️⃣Tateyama Ropeway
The most beautiful sight along the entire Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is taking the Tateyama Ropeway from Daikan Peak to admire the view of Kurobe Lake and the surrounding mountains.
🚠Transportation:
Because getting to the snow walls is extremely troublesome, there are not many individual travelers. I will explain in detail in the next article.
✈️International: You can fly to Nagoya or Komatsu from within Japan, and then take a car to Toyama or Tateyama.
🚊Within Japan: From Toyama Station, transfer to six types of transportation to tour Tateyama Kurobe. If you're only visiting the Snow Wall, get off at Murodo Station in the middle. If you want to tour the entire route, get off at Ogizawa Station.
⛷️Dress:
The mountain climate is variable, so be sure to check the weather forecast before you go. Shoes with good grip and clothes that are warm and easy to remove are recommended.
Choose a sunny day to visit, as the blue sky makes for beautiful photos. If it's cloudy, it will be very cold on the mountain.

Japan's Little Alps are definitely worth a visit
Europe's Alps have long been a dream destination, but who knew that in Japan, you could enjoy the same experience. 😃😃😃
🌟 Highlights:
It's truly a mountain that boasts the scenery of all four seasons. The snowy peaks contrast with the warm spring-like conditions at the mountain's base. The vivid colors of nature are truly like a painting. 👍👍👍
👍 Most recommended:
Taking the full train ride not only allows you to overlook the beautiful scenery throughout, but the combination of mountains and sea here is even more amazing. You can imagine one side with romantic cherry blossoms, while the mountain top is a path of ice and snow. It really makes you reflect on the wonders of nature.
A spot in Japan that is definitely worth recommending for your trip.
