Three Lesser-Known Treasure County Towns in Gansu Perfect for Road Trips
I've finally arrived at the other side of the Anywhere Door in Gansu.
Over the course of six years, we've taken several leisurely road trips through Gansu and encountered numerous treasure county towns. This collection features three particularly memorable ones. In terms of travel, these towns are quite niche, with the first being especially obscure, yet all three boast rich landscapes. Join us as we virtually travel and plant the seeds of wanderlust.
❶Lintao County (Images 1, 2, 3)
Obscurity Level: ★★★★★
A county under the jurisdiction of Dingxi City in Gansu Province, it is named after the Tao River, the largest tributary of the Yellow River on its upper right bank, which flows through it. As a travel destination, it's quite off the beaten path, but Lintao has a long history. As early as the Warring States period, it was established as Didao County. After the Qin dynasty built Longxi Commandery, it gradually became an important town and was also a vital passage on the ancient Silk Road.
The county is rich in cultural landscapes, being both the site where Majiayao painted pottery was unearthed & the namesake of the Majiayao site, and the location of the Geshu Han Monument of Merit. This monument, erected in honor of the Tibetan general Geshu Han, featured in the movie 'The Longest Day in Chang'an,' is located in the center of Lintao County. Its age makes it extremely precious.
The natural scenery here is also breathtaking. There's the Sumu Gorge Grand Canyon, which features both karst & Danxia landforms and stretches nearly 28 kilometers, still rarely visited by tourists.
🏞️Other attractions in Lintao County: Tao River, Diaochan Lake, etc.
🚙One-day road trip itinerary: Tao River ➡️ Diaochan Lake ➡️ Geshu Han Monument of Merit ➡️ Majiayao Site ➡️ Sumu Gorge Grand Canyon.
❷Xiahe County (Images 4–8)
Obscurity Level★★★★
A county under the jurisdiction of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, it is an area where Tibetan people live. It is named after the Daxia River that flows through the territory.
The county is home to the famous Labrang Monastery of the Gelug sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The monks here are very knowledgeable, and we got detailed answers to several questions we had accumulated during our visit. In Ganjia Town, there is also an ancient city with a very special octagonal-shaped city wall, hence the name 'Octagon City.' Presumed to have been built during the Han dynasty, it has always been a strategic military location through the ages.
Like Lintao County, Xiahe is also located in the transitional area between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Loess Plateau, so its natural scenery is particularly colorful. There are vast grasslands like Sangke and Ganjia, as well as geological landscapes like Baishiya. The scenery is even more beautiful in summer and autumn.
🏞️Other attractions in Xiahe County: Dazhong Lake, Sangke Wetland, Baishiya Temple, Zohai Temple, etc.
🚙Three-day road trip itinerary: D1 Dazhong Lake ➡️ Labrang Monastery ➡️ Ganjia Grassland. D2 Ganjia Grassland ➡️ Baishiya ➡️ Baishiya Temple ➡️ Octagon City ➡️ Zohai Temple. D3 Sangke Grassland ➡️ Sangke Wetland.
❸Dangchang County
Dang is pronounced tàn. A county under the jurisdiction of Longnan City.
The town of Hada Shop in Dangchang County has an important patriotic education base: the Red Army Long March Memorial. This place is a turning point in the Long March and should be understood in detail.
Dangchang County is located at the intersection of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Minshan and West Qinling mountain ranges, with stunning natural scenery and the nickname 'Jiangnan of Long'. The Guan'e Gully here, with its towering mountains, cascading waterfalls, and clear blue lakes, offers even more spectacular views in summer and autumn.
🚙Other attractions in Dangchang County: Wanxiang Cave, Yaozhai Gully, etc.
🚙Two-day road trip itinerary: D1 Hada Shop ➡️ Wanxiang Cave ➡️ Yaozhai Gully. D2 Guanzhu Gully ➡️ Eman Gully.

⚠️Travel Tips for Gannan
❗️Gannan is located on the plateau, with a large temperature difference between day and night, so you need to wear fleece, thin sweaters or jackets in the morning and evening!
❗️Due to the high altitude, the ultraviolet rays are strong, so be sure to bring sun hats, sunglasses, and other sun protection items! It's also best to wear long sleeves and pants in the summer!
Gansu's Little Jiangnan|"Longnan's Little Jiuzhaigou" Guan'e Gully
|"Longnan's Little Jiuzhaigou" Guan'e Gully.⛰【Travel Tips】
📍Detailed address: Guan'e Gully National Forest Park, Dangchang County, Longnan City, Gansu Province
🚗Transportation tips:
Lanzhou→Hadapu Town. After exiting the station, there is a bus to Dangchang County Bus Station on the right side🚌, about 50 minutes, 13💰/person, taxi🚗20💰/person
🕙Opening hours: 8:00-17:30
💰Ticket price:
Through ticket 130💰/person (includes admission and shuttle bus🚌ticket valid for 48 hours)
Includes two scenic areas of Guan'e Gully
🌟Highlights:
Unexpectedly, the tickets🎫 for Guan'e Gully and Eman Gully are shared, which was not mentioned in the travel guides I read before, and I find it very nice that there is a shuttle bus🚌 at the Guan'e Gully ticket office going back and forth to Eman Gully.
If you are going with your family, I suggest you take 2 days to visit like we did.
You are dropped off by the shuttle bus🚌 at a destination and then proceed on your own, and on the return trip, you can get off at a scenic spot on your own, tour it, and then wait at the stop for the bus, and the drivers will enthusiastically introduce each scenic spot. Guan'e Gully has many waterfalls along the way, while Eman Gully is known for its dense vegetation, and both places are worth visiting
📌Travel Tips:
1. Drive yourself to the first gate of the large Guan'e Gully scenic area (actually Guanzhu Gully), continue driving about 5 kilometers forward, and park at Hua'er🌸Tan parking lot.
2. Buy tickets🎫 with your ID card, Guanzhu Gully and Eman Gully have a joint ticket, valid for 2 days, 130 yuan💰.
3. After entering the gate, take a minibus to the scenic area's main gate to have your ticket checked and enter the scenic area. ⚠️Note, when returning, remember to tell the staff that you are on the "No. 1 bus", so as not to get mixed up with tourists who enter the scenic area from the first gate.
4. After entering the scenic area, you can spend 10 yuan💰 to take a bus to Guanyin Pavilion, and then continue to hike up. If you are physically fit, you can also hike. We chose to hike, and when we came down, we bought a ticket🎫 to take the bus.
5. Drive from Hua'er Tan🌸 to Eman Gully, remember to choose the longer main road! We chose the shortest distance, which is the dirt road from the middle of the mountain, with trepidation, and had to keep driving forward. The moment we reached the asphalt road at the bottom of the mountain, our hanging hearts finally settled.
6. Take the bus🚌 on the second floor of Eman Gully Tourist Center to "Shiba Xianghui" where passengers get off to admire the thousand-year-old yew🌲. But to get to Zedangcuo, you need to walk 9 kilometers back and forth, so we had to give up and then take the bus all the way back, so the experience in Eman Gully was not good.
Guan'egou
Guan'egou National Forest Park is located in the suburbs of Dangchang County, Longnan City, Gansu Province, consisting of Guanzhu Gully, Eman Gully, Mulong Gully, and Temple Gully, among others.
Guan'egou Scenic Area is characterized by its landscape, known as the 'Little Jiuzhaigou', and combines mountainous landscapes, water features, forest views, snow-capped mountains, rock formations, and ice features into one. It has a grand scale of geological relics and a complete variety, making it a natural treasure trove of natural landscapes. The forest coverage rate in Guan'egou reaches 75.1%, with a beautiful ecological environment, unique natural landscapes, and a diverse distribution of flora and fauna. Inside the gully, mountains overlap, secluded valleys crisscross, green hills and clear waters, strange peaks and rocks, splashing waterfalls, meadows and snow mountains, lakes and rapids, and towering ancient trees; on the cliffs on both sides of the gully, there are many interesting and varied rock structures, which experts have praised as the most valuable 'geological park' for viewing. Stepping into Guan'egou, there are countless natural landscapes such as forests, grasslands, landforms, water bodies, celestial phenomena, and cultural landscapes. It has the beauty of water like Jiuzhaigou, and the ruggedness of Huangshan and Huashan. Its visual impact, spiritual shock, and pristine beauty are first-class in the country and the best in the northwest.

The Largest Monastery Outside of Tibet
Situated in southern Gansu, Labrang Monastery in Xiahe is the largest Tibetan monastery outside of Tibet. First founded in 1709, at its peak it hosted over 3,600 monks.
Included in your entrance fee is a guided tour with an English speaking monk. You will walk through the temples and learn the history of the area. You should be lucky enough to enter the main temple during prayer time and witness the incredible chanting and humming it over 100 monks in unison.
After exploring inside the monastery, it is well worth walking around the the kora circuit. This is the pathway on the outside of the monastery walls which contains the prayer wheels. Hundreds of Tibetan pilgrims at a time walk this circuit in a clockwise circle. You’ll hear the constant chants, see their gorgeous traditional Tibetan clothing and even witness some pilgrims and monks prostrating as they walk.
To get to Labrang you need to get to the capital of Gansu, Lanzhou and then catch a 4 hour bus south to Xiahe.

Labrang Tibetan Monastery in South-Gansu
About 1 km west from Xiahe County in the Gannan Prefecture, Gansu Province, lies the Labrang Monastery. A nice place in the hearts of the Tibetans, it stands by the Daxia River and faces the Dragon Mountain. The monastery is famous for its Tibetan culture, imposing Buddhist structures and the long corridor of prayer wheels. It is a holy place where Buddhism followers learn the essence of Buddhism. During its peak, there were over four thousand monks. Labrang Monastery boasts the longest corridor of prayer wheels over the world, with over 1,700 scripture wheels.
ℹ️ Chinese name: 拉卜楞寺
🚐 How to get there?
From Lanzhou, visitors can catch a direct bus at Lanzhou South Coach Station to Xiahe County. From other counties like Linxia or Hezuo, there are buses to Xiahe every day.
🎫 Admission Fee 40RMB for visiting several main halls. Otherwise, you can tour the grounds for free.
🛕I recommend spending at least 3-5 hours in the monastery, as it's really huge and impressive. You can also walk the nearby grassland.

Do you know where the longest corridor in the world is?
This Gannan self-driving tour, in addition to Zhabei that I am most worthy of thinking is this world-class top Tibetan school! It has the longest corridor in the world! No matter which country the locals take, they will take time to worship here every year! When you come here, time seems to be quiet, no distractions!
Address
is located in Xiahe County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, 200km from Lanzhou!
From Lanzhou, it takes 4.5h to drive! The road is very good, the whole process can also take the provincial highway! Or take a direct bus in Lanzhou District!
Introduction
Strictly speaking, this is not just a temple, it retains the most complete teaching system of Tibetan Buddhism in the country. Most of the monks came to the temple when they were seven or eight years old. After 12 years of study, they were counted as learning. It was not like learning, but also a lifelong practice.

Visiting a local mountain festival
Sometimes you're just at the right place at the right time. During our roadtrip in South-Gansu, we climbed a mountain and found out about the local Tibetan festival, that occurs for one week during August. We tried some homemade food and had a chat waiting for the sunset. We even met a guy from Xi'An who travels there every summer.
Where? Zhagana offers a stunning landscape, forests and small villages. Locals do both farming and pasturing work in Zhagana. The best season to visit is from May to October. Summer is the best time to go as everything turns to green, winter gets cold!
⭐ While visiting Zhagana, there are many opportunities to experience the local culture. Just walk around and see what happens. 😊 Enjoy your trip!
🚐 Zhagana is better for a car trip. 🎫 Entrance fee is around 20 RMB.
