Ho Pui Reservoir
Still consider it a family friendly hike despite the uphill paved road beginning from the village; then it’s an entirely flat paths around the reservoir. Uphill part of the walk do get us sweating. Thought you’ll be seeing the view over Kam Tin.
Completed in 1962, Ho Pui Reservoir dam wall is pretty cool. Walking along it, on the right is the gallons of reservoir and on the left you’ll be able to see the dam wall.
My kids enjoyed hiking; especially when we saw special creatures such as Koi fishes swimming in the reservoir, lizards that came to say hello, ladybug that flew by, tadpoles at the creek and caterpillars on tree branches.
While hiking along Ho Pui Reservoir family trail , you’ll come across some “hot spot” aka instagram worthy photo spot. You won’t miss it as there will be people queuing for it 🥱 If you must know, it’s the bamboo forests (you won’t miss it) and the huge vine swing (near the creek where you’ll find tadpoles)
Distance : 4.55km

From Tuen Mun’s So Kwun Wat Tsuen, taking the Maclehose trails sec 10, follow the signs to Thousand Lake / Reservoir Islands Viewpoint.
We drove to So Kwun Wat Tsuen, where parking spaces are offered by the villagers for a price ($70 to $100). From here, it’s all paved road for about 45mins to 1 hour where you’ll reach a viewpoint with signboard showing another 1km to Reservoir Island viewpoint and a cubicle toilet next to it. If you’re travelling with young children or strollers, this may be your endpoint for the hike.
But if you want a better view! Keep going, the remaining 1km are pretty straightforward in the woods, there’s a clear path, just watch out the roots and rocks. When you see the signboard of Thousand Lake/ Reservoir Islands viewpoint, the stairs are right next to it, just climb up and keep walking. You’ll know when you arrived.
* Distance: approx. 7.7km round trip
* Altitudes: 296m
* Time: approx 2 hours 40 mins
* Toilet: Public toilet before the starting point at the village; then cubicle toilet after an hour walk
* Difficulties: ⭐️⭐️ (although mostly paved road, but it’s ascending/ inclines like 80% of the time)
* Scenic: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
