The Pearl of Guangdong, Guangzhou 🏙️ 🌉
Guangzhou is the captial of Guangdong province, with around 20 million people it’s one of the biggest cities in the world and part of the greater pearl river delta urban area. It has a long history as a trade port due to it’s strategic location, being know around the world as canton for it’s infamous trade fair the canton fair.
I lived in the city for about 6 months and I was fascinated by the urban devlopment and architecture, I would love to hire a bike and cycle along the river and take in the different residential and commercial developments. The city is growing rapidly and you can see cranes all along the river.
Opposite the canton tower there is a large public plaza flanked by Guangzhou’s two tallest buildings dubbed ‘the twin towers’ which act as the centerpiece for the city’s CBD Zhujiang New Town. In ZNT you will find lots of western shops and restaurants and many international embassies, most notably the embassy of the United States.
At the northern end of the public plaza you will find Guangzhou’s biggest shopping district with three big malls, and along the way there is a nice man made river and park with various sculptures and seating areas.
Guangzhou is a huge city to explore and if you only have limited time a cycle along the river and a walk through the central plaza is a good way to see the highlights of the city.

If you’re planning to visit Guangzhou, this should be in your must visit place.
Not only it should be in your must visit place, it should either be the first thing that you do on your first night there, to get the glimpse of the overview of what your whole trip will offer, or be the last thing that you see, to bid the farewell to the place that has been treating you well, an ode to goodbye.
The cruise operating hour is from 6.30pm to 11.30pm where for the whole 70-110 minutes every trip you’ll be feasting your eyes to the colourful buildings that light up at night especially the magnificent Canton Tower, along the largest river in Guangzhou, the Pearl River.

Canton Tower - 488m Look out
Me and my friend Ana didn't see each other since she moved to Guangzhou from Shanghai. So we both were very excited to meet and get on top of the Guangzhou.
Canton Tower 100% must visit in Guangzhou!
There are several ticket options but as we are both always willing to see as much as possible we went for the one that will give us access to everything that the tower can offer.
My personal favorite is the Highest Observation Deck in Canton Tower - 488 meters.
why? because everything below is keeping you behind thick glass, but there it’s totally different!
Can you imagine an open balcony at a height of 488m? - That’s exactly what you get there.

Travel back to the 19th century as you step onto the square in front of Guangzhou's Sacred Heart Cathedral.
Apparently the largest all-granite church in the world, the Gothic cathedral, nicknamed the Stone House, 石室, was first constructed in the 1860s, led by French missionaries. At the time, its spires towered over the surrounding buildings and locals allegedly feared it would damage the feng shui of the area. Now it is dwarfed by nearby skyscrapers and cannot be seen from very far, but once on the square, it still dominates its immediate neighbourhood. It was damaged in the Second World War and used as a warehouse during the Cultural Revolution, but it has since been well restored, including new stained glass windows and a better quality roof.
The sharp double spires have become a symbol of Guangzhou, featuring alongside Canton Tower and the Five Goats statue in Yuexiu Park in posters and advertising throughout the city.
The cathedral is sometimes open for sightseeing or private prayer between mass, but the main gate seems to be open somewhat sporadically. The square outside the gate is the best place to view the whole façade though and is a popular spot for selfies in Old Canton.
The Sacred Heart Cathedral is a short walk from Haizhu Square 海珠广场站 and Yidelu 一德路站 metro stations. Yide Road itself is home to many wholesalers offering everything from electronics to dried seahorses and is an interesting place for window shopping, and the north embankment of the Pearl River is only a short walk away.

We miss you Canton!
First time to Guangzhou, food taste is similiar to Malaysian food , especially ChaSiu and Roasted chicken . #Canton convinient transport . I will definitely visit Canton again.
Next trip should visit guangxi or shenzhen. Eat more and relax more . 商业天河区is a must-go if you love shopping and food . It’s a 地下购物街 which you can shop until you drop. Canton, I will come again one day.
Guangzhou- the real port of trade
#visitguangzhou
With the rapid development of China, one can see grand buildings and modern technology everywhere in the country including Guangzhou, but what I love most about the city is its remaining barter flavour in the local markets.
You can still find many simple stalls selling home-grown fruits and self-caught seafood. Haggling is possible and it is fun when you make a bulk purchase and get a good deal.
Since Guangzhou is geographically near waters - riverfood, seafood and fishes in general are prolific and fresh.

This is a very popular Chinese restaurant features traditional Cantonese style dim sum served in bamboo steamers. VIP rooms and private partitions provide lots of privacy and are perfect for power lunches or friendly gathering. The old-style Lingnan decorations provide unique atmosphere. Double-boiled soups and dim sum are delicious.

amazing Tower, it lights up every night of different colors.. #canton #cantontower #china
Lee's Diner is a trip to 1950s USA right in the middle of old Canton. In a rather unexpected location amongst the dim sum, herbal tea shops and qilou of Yuexiu District is this perfect representation of Americana in design and cuisine. I forgot to take any pictures of the restaurant itself because I was too busy enjoying the food, but a juke box, candy-apple red booths and the decorations on the wall give just the right amount of kitsch to be comfortable. My Lee's Burger was probably the best hamburger I've had in China, though I could have done with a few more chips. Also pictured: the Lee's Hotdog and chicken and waffles. The waffles were a little bit dry but the chicken perfectly fried. Highly recommended are their milkshakes, made with real ice cream. They also have draught beer and a large selection of bottles.
