Trace of Portuguese in Diu, Gujarat
#freehotelstay , ##Diu_history,
More than 400 years was Diu a territory of Portuguese. Only in 1961 the Indian Union finally conquered the enclave of Diu: a small place at the sea belongs to the Gujarat peninsula. What is remaining now are few excellent Portuguese architecturals, such as the Diu Fort, the St. Paul's catholic church which still serves approximately 400 Christians in Diu and a small chapel in the middle of the main village. Diu is a combination of experience which feel different than another places in Gujarat: the emptiness laid-back feeling, the influence of Portuguese cuisine, its old-style European architecture, the feeling of the glory in the past which is now gone. Diu is also thr only place in Gurajat state where alcohol is legal.
