It opened in 1983 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Emperor Showa's reign.

🚗Transportation and accommodation:
If you are departing from Shinjuku, take the JR Ome Line to Nishi-Tachikawa Station (connected by a pedestrian bridge, about a 2-minute walk to Nishi-Tachikawa Gate) or Higashi-Nakagami Station (about a 10-minute walk to Akishima Gate) for the fastest route. Take the JR Chuo Line Rapid or JN Nambu Line to Tachikawa Station, and walk about 10 minutes to Akebono Gate. You can also walk about 15 minutes to the front of Tachikawa Gate.
