Day 15 of road trip. Took a short drive to split from Trogir. Split looks very similar to Trogir but bigger, more traffic and more crowded with big shopping malls and supermarkets. Went to the old town, Diocletian’s Palace and the underground structure of the palace, which charges an entrance fee of 16 Euros for 2 adult n 2 kids. It’s not a large area to explore but after knowing the palace basements were used as the setting for where Daenerys keeps her dragons, I felt worth it 😆. Personally I prefer Trogir, which is a smaller, quieter and more peaceful version.

Today, Diocletian's Palace occupies half of the old town of Split, Croatia's second-largest city. It is one of the best-preserved and largest Roman palaces still in existence, earning it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Diocletian was born a commoner and later rose through the military ranks to become the Roman Emperor. When he took over the empire, the once-mighty Roman Empire was in decline, plagued by internal strife, power struggles, military factions, barbarian invasions, and famines. After eliminating all rivals and gaining complete control of the Roman Empire, Diocletian deified the emperor's status, moved the capital, and sidelined the Senate to implement autocratic rule. He also initiated extensive reforms in taxation, law, and politics to address the empire's decay. Externally, he waged wars to secure the empire's borders against Persia, Egypt, and Germanic tribes. Just about everything you want to see in Split is within the walls of Roman emperor Diocletian's Palace, completed in 305 AD. It's a compact area and you'll easily find your way around the narrow alleys. Make sure you visit St. Domnius Cathedral, it is well over 1,000 years old. You could climb to the top of the bell tower there for a view of the city. But if you care, I did find a better spot.Walk exactly 10 minutes to the left of the palace and then up some stairs and paths in the neighborhood of Marjan. Attraction: Diocletian’s Palace Address: Dioklecijanova 1, 21000, Split, Croatia Direction: Few mins walk from Split Port/ Bus terminal Opening Hours : 24 Hours Diocletian’s Palace is a well preserved Roman palace built at around 305AD. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Part of it is now a small bazaar with souvenir shops for tourist to go shopping. There are two cellars you can visit here It's amazing that it's nearly 40 degrees outside When you walk into the cellar, it's extremely cool, as if the air conditioner is on. If you are a fan of Game of Thrones, you must not miss this attraction This is where Mother Dragon is kept If you feel it carefully, you may even hear the sound of the fire dragon 😉 The entire cellar fully retains the cultural relics unearthed here. When I first arrived, I thought there was only one building that was a palace. It took me several trips through this castle to realize that It turns out that this whole place is a royal palace😅😅 This is a very well-preserved Romanesque palace The palace built when Diocletian abdicated as Roman Emperor This is also a world cultural heritage Entering the square of the Royal Palace, there are also ancient Roman soldiers who can take pictures here. Seeing these soldiers brought back the memories of playing Century Empire when I was a kid. If you happened to visit Croatia, it is a good idea to spend a day and a night in this peaceful coastal city. Split is about 3 hour coach or driving from the famous “game of throne” city Dubrovnik. We were visiting during the autumn n winter time. You can basically “own” the street or restaurant. The price of hotel and restaurant is really friendly when it is in a cooler weather here. It is quite a good deal to save money if you just want to visit the historic site. The old town of split keeps the ancient tower and make you feel like you are in a movie. We live next to the habour area can enjoy the breathtaking view. The whole city is within walking distance. You can easily reach DM, restaurant and a little shopping mall within 20 mins walk from south to north. There is split airport around 15 mins drive from town. It is a beautiful new modern airport that consist of pretty much everything you need. Although we visited in a fall time, it won’t be a surprise that the city would be popular and crowded in a summer. Located on the waterfront, Maduro bar has a range of drinks on offer for some of the most reasonable prices. Cocktail prices here are around €3-4 less than in the Old Town area and it’s just a short walk away. This bar doesn’t have any food options but it is a good stopping point for a break in your waterfront walk. Views are perfect, watching boats pull in and out of the marina in the gorgeous sunshine is a highlight for any trip here. Split is the second largest city of Croatia after Zagreb where this Old Town is protected under UNESCO World Heritage. Exploring Diocletian’s Palace is a must to do in Split particularly the Cellars(Podrumi) one can find lots of souvenir shops underneath. Getting There - Bus: Zadar—-Split Attractions - Diocletian's Cellars, Saint Domnius Bell Tower, Silver Gate, Hotels - Spinutska ul. 39 Food & Restaurants - Pumparela Gelateria It took me approximately 3.5 hours to get to split from Zadar. There are tourists everywhere. apparently it was a hotspot for American tourists lol. can’t imagine if it was summer Split must be mobbed. Suggest you can book the trip for island hopping here.

Brac Island was the goal to this trip and, definitely, didn’t disappoint. Take a boat in Split then you can walk to Brac or take a little train. The walking to the end of island is fantastic. A promenade through many refreshing trees, birds singing, shopping, restaurants and bars are the reward.

Split has the best of both worlds when it comes to holiday destination. Perfect beaches for relaxed days spent by the sea, huge shopping mall (mall of split) if you want to buy anything and a picturesque old town perfect for lazy afternoon strolls. Game of Throws was filmed in some locations too
