Shirakawago in Summer
Another place really worthy to visit is shirakawago... but... I wouldn't recommend going in summer because it's waaaaay to hot!! There are limited places with shelters, except many museums or historical houses which requires an entrance fee. We bought sunscreen as soon as we saw the first convenience store after alighting the bus, and bought ice drinks less than half an hour under the sun. The buildings are really interesting though, with displays of tools locals used for farming. That is me in the first picture, the scenery looks like a painting, right? From the pictures, Shirakawago looks amazing in winter! #japan #unescoheritage #shirakawa-go
Dreamy snow village in Japan - Shirakawago
#shirakawa-go##japan##beautiful_japan
Shirakawa-go is a picturesque mountain hamlet renowned for being one of the snowiest places not only in Japan but also in the world. We had the opportunity to visit this enchanting village in February of this year, and the experience was nothing short of magical. The scenery, with its snow-covered rooftops and serene landscapes, created a fairytale atmosphere.
However, our visit was bittersweet, as we weren’t able to stay for the nighttime festivities. The village is particularly famous for its winter illuminations in January and February, when its historic gassho-zukuri houses are beautifully lit against the backdrop of a snowy landscape. Witnessing this breathtaking sight would have undoubtedly added an extra layer of wonder to our trip, making the evening just as memorable as the day.
【Nagoya Travel】Shirakawa-go: Gassho Village, Experience Traditional Japanese Life.
Shirakawa-go is located in Gifu Prefecture, Japan, and is famous for its gassho-style houses. The roofs are steep, resembling hands in prayer, designed to withstand heavy snow and strong winds. The surroundings of Shirakawa-go are beautiful, blending nature with traditional farming culture.
Gassho Village is the main settlement here, preserving many historic homes that attract numerous tourists. The scenery is stunning in all seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, and vibrant autumn leaves, making it perfect for photography. The most enchanting sight is in winter when layers of snow cover the roofs, creating a dreamy white world, reminiscent of the snow globes from childhood.
Shirakawa-go is not only a treasure trove of culture and history but also a great place to experience traditional Japanese life, offering a deep sense of local culture and natural beauty.
Travel Diary of Shirakawa-go: Stunning Scenery! Village Pudding! Unique Houses!
Shirakawa-go's Gassho Village, located in Gifu Prefecture, is a highly popular tourist destination where you can admire the World Heritage Site of Shirakawa-go and its unique village features! This time, I made a special trip from Nagoya to Shirakawa-go, and the houses here are incredibly unique. The village is called Gassho Village for a reason! First, the roof design is called 'Gassho' because it is formed by two roof sections joining together, resembling hands in prayer! As I walked around, I also tried the famous pudding of Shirakawa-go. There is a shop in the village called 'Pudding House' that specializes in various flavors of pudding. You must try it when you visit! Additionally, the village is surrounded by forests, giving it a natural and refreshing atmosphere! This is one of the reasons I love it so much!
I highly recommend that anyone visiting Nagoya should take a trip to Shirakawa-go!
🇯🇵💴Japan Nagoya Trip Shirakawa-go
Visited Shirakawa-go on my trip to Nagoya, and it was absolutely breathtaking! The traditional thatched-roof houses, especially in winter, make the village look like something out of a fairy tale. The atmosphere is peaceful, and the scenery is stunning, with picturesque mountains surrounding the village. The service everywhere was wonderful—locals are very friendly and welcoming. You can explore the Gassho-zukuri houses, some of which are centuries old, and even stay overnight in a traditional inn for an authentic experience. I highly recommend visiting this UNESCO World Heritage site for anyone who loves history, nature, and unique cultural experiences!"#japan #Japan Nagoya #shirakawa-go #nagoyatrip #nagoya

📍Shirakawa-go, Japan
Visited Shirakawa-go, which is also known as Shirakawa village while travelling to Japan and we were in awe the entire times that we were here! It is a rural mountain village surrounded by mountains. The unique architectures called Gassho-zukuri farmhouses were nicely built in the land of Shirakawa-go, whereby no nails or any other metal materials were used during the construction of the house! The village is almost like it is straight out of the fairytale with its snowy mountains, snow-covered rooftops of the farmhouses. The panoramic view of Shirakawa-go was absolutely stunning and breathtaking. We spent 2 days here and couldn’t get enough of the sight! Would definitely recommend this place! 10/10!
Shirakawa Historic Village
#2024wish
Shirakawa Historic Village is a Japanese mountain settlement in once considered a wild and unexplored region. Because of the area's natural environment, with high mountains and heavy snowfall with neighboring regions are limited.
The Gassho-style house is a symbol of the World Heritage Site of Shirakawa-go village. The architecture is unique and is called Gassho-zukuri and is extremely rare in Japan. The best time to go is in May, August, September and October. The views are breathtaking, serene and charming. It is definitely worth the visit there.
The address is 501-5692 Hatogaya-517 Shirakawa Village District Gifu Prefecture.
I wish to go Hokkaido!

Japan Shirakawa-go’s Snowy Charm
In 2023 Jan, I went on a winter fairy tale in Shirakawa-go, where snow-draped thatched roofs create a magical scene. Imagine strolling through this UNESCO village, feeling the hush of winter around gabled houses. Warm up with sweet amazake and savor local winter delights. This snowy adventure is not just a trip; it's my personal journey through the enchanting beauty of a Japanese winter wonderland.

Breathtaking views of SHIRAKAGAWA-GO!
Shirakagawa-go is a small traditional village with small buildings and the village is known as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. It is definitely worth a visit especially during winter season with breathtaking snowscapes views!
The unique architecture of the houses called Gassho- zukuri is rarely found in Japan. Any seasons are good to visit this unique village. From Tokyo station, take the Hokuriko Shinkansen to Toyama and then the bus to this village. The bus ride may take up to 3 hours. Allow at least 3-4 hours to visit this village.
Best to visit nearby places such as Takayama and Kanazawa.

The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go
If you want to have a dreamy experience in winter, try to visit this lovely place with cutie tiny houses! 😅❤️
The UNESCO World Heritage villages of Shirakawago and Gokayama are remarkably photogenic, thanks to their steeply-sloped gassho-zukuri thatched roofs (capable of withstanding heavy snowfall) and beautiful mountain surroundings.
Getting to Shirakawago
Located in Gifu Prefecture (Gifu-ken), Shirakawago is home to Ogimachi, the most visited of the region’s UNESCO villages. Ogimachi’s extreme popularity stems in great part from its utter convenience. The village is located directly en route between the coastal city of Kanazawa and the mountain town of Takayama.
As there is no access by train, you can get to Shirakawago’s Ogimachi village by car. Some travelers enjoy renting a car to self-drive, while others prefer to have a private driver.
There are also convenient buses between Kanazawa and Takayama, which stop briefly in Ogimachi. When purchasing bus tickets, you can include a stopover, and for most travelers 1-2 hours is the right amount of time.

Magical Winter Wonderland - Shirakawago
#2023travelwish
One of the destinations in my bucket list is Shirakawago in Japan. It is a UNESCO Heritage town. In winter, it becomes a beautiful winter wonderland with the falling snow!

Winter wonderland

location: shirakawa-go village, Gifu, Japan
would love to travel to the winter wonderland of gassho cottages that reminded me of Pokémon game. shirakawa-go is a unesco heritage site, it’s beautiful and breathtaking during winter as the snow blankets the little cottages. seeing the snowfall in person and experience the postcard view will be such a magical feeling! There is no train station there, have to take a bus from the nearby towns. Takes about 2-3h by bus. But the journey is worth it!
ShiragawaGo
Shinagawa Go has been registered in UNESCO world heritage list for it’s traditional houses and unique culture. it’s located in Gifu prefecture, Japan.

Relaxing onsen for the soul
#spamagic
located at Onyado Yui no Sho in Shirakawa-go Hida Takayama Onsen (Gifu) - 20min walk from shirakawa village. it’s a wonderful experience for those who never tried onsen before. I stayed at the hotel there for a night so I’m not sure if it’s possible to walk in. The onsen facilities are awesome, comes with free soba (slurps), drinks for after soak refreshments and of course bathing facilities like make up removal and facial toner and essence! amazing. the view is great and secluded (needed for private onsen)! aside from private onsen (no need to book just need to queue), there are public onsen for female and male (separately). it’s very relaxing.
all photos are taken without anyone inside the private onsen.

located within shirakawa go village in Japan!
shows the maintenance of the gassho houses in the heritage town. every corner is an art, from the weaving to putting the hut together to withstand the strong snow fall. the view from the house is beautiful as well. even more so during winter (sadly it hasn’t snowed when I visited). able to see 1000 years old wood craved into our usual furnitures.
cost 200yen to visit. but worth it :)

Located in Shirakawa, 28 miles from Hida Minzoku Mura Folk Village! full address: 908-2 Iijima Shirakawago
a lot of ppl does day trips to shirakawa but staying overnight has its magic! chose this hotel/ryokan cos it’s modern and it’s near the village. the room is big Japan standard.
comes with a small dressing table which is so cute. room comes with little snack, green tea and hand drip coffee. love it. bed looks comfortable as well. we chose 2 double beds. It’s odd that you have to remove your shoes before check in and bring your luggage to your room in socks. weird custom for a relatively new (built in 2019) modern hotel.
as the hotel is near the village, can take a bus (selected timing) from the village to the hotel straight :) it’s 5min drive, 20min walk. I’ve chose to have dinner and breakfast here as well.
average cost per night is about yen 450,000 with meal :)
Snow Magic in Shirakawa-go
#2023travelwish
Definitely recommended !
This historical village is on the UNESCO list. The main point is houses. It attracts attention with its unique architecture. Since the roofs of houses resemble the shape of praying hands, architecture is called gassho zukuri, meaning praying hands.
This village during the winter receives a lot of snow every year. However, there is no problem for houses because the structure of roofs is quite appropriate for strict weather conditions.
To be able to feel Japanese culture deeply, it should be stayed in ryokan (Japanese traditional lnn) overnight.
Shirakawa-go is a place where I will wanna go over and over 🙂

Most beautiful historic village in Japan
Shirakawago is the most beautiful historic village in Japan. It is the UNESCO Heritage Village that would be best to visit during winter and seeing the village from above point. I came here in the winter It was a calm, serene, peaceful. You need to go up to the hill to see and enjoy the whole village area from above. It was too beautiful. You can seeing the traditional homes in that region up close was spectacular. There are plenty of shops to visit and buy reasonable priced. #shirakawago #gifu #japan #passionpassport #staycation #gooutside #wintergetaway #snow #house #historicculture #village #gasszo
Hidden Village in the Valleys
Getting There - You can either opt to go with a tour group that covers 1 night stay at a nearby town and bus trip, or take a train to the nearest station Shirakawago IC.
Attractions - amazingly well preserved traditional Gassho style houses with hay covered roofs lying within a scenic and breathtaking valley. real people live here but some houses are open for visitors to visit, for example the old Village Head house. There is also a look out point about 20 minutes walk from the village that has the view of the whole village and the valley surrounding, cannot be missed!
Hotels - There are a few guest house options available within the village, but they may be limited in numbers.
Food & Restaurants - Within the village there are not many choices but within 5KM radius there are 3 towns with potentially more food options.
Shopping - souvenirs, and some traditional local snacks.

Winter in Shirakawa-go
Shirakawa-go is a is a quaint little village in the Gifu Prefecture that looks like a scene straight out of a fairy tale! This UNESCO World Heritage site is well-known for gassho-zukuri, which are houses built with triangular thatched roofs resembling hands clasped in prayer. It is constructed at a steep angle to allow heavy snow to fall off easily in winter.
During winter, there is a light up event where several houses will be lit up in the evening. With the houses covered in a thick blanket of snow, this evening illumination scene is nothing short of magical. You can visit Shirakawa-go at any time of the year but I would personally recommend to visit in Dec-Mar as the winter snow makes the village even more stunning!

I have heard that we can take nice photos in Gassho Village, as long as keep the wish in your heart during the snowing season
Baichuan Township, which was designated as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1995, is located in the foothills of Baishan Mountain in the northwest of Jixian County. It is a quiet mountain village surrounded by mountains, paddy fields and rivers. It is named because of the palm-shaped roof house. In the winter, Hezhang Village is synonymous with fairy tales. The whole village is covered with velvety white snow. The faint spots in the evening cabin are lit with light, which is fascinating. It is important to note here that due to the wooden structure, the most feared fire in the village is the fire, so many warnings and fire hydrants will be seen in the village.
