Stay at Bajue Lou Inn in the ancient city, very convenient location facing the Bell Tower, perfect for photos with a sense of traditional rooftops. 【Two days and one night itinerary】 ✔️Day 1 route 1️⃣ Longjuxiang Breakfast (specialties: Shaomai, glutinous rice cold cake) Wake up at 7 am on Saturday and freshen up. In mid-October, I wavered between Pingyao and Taiyuan. Since the train schedule between Beijing and Taiyuan was more convenient, I chose Taiyuan, and of course, I had to arrange for the Jin Merchant Young Mistress look. After searching, I found some favorite client photos and quickly contacted the photographer. The makeup and styling were also directly recommended by the photographer, which was very convenient. 【Makeup & Styling】There are quite a few shoots of Qing and Han dynasty women in Shanxi courtyards. I always feel that since I’m in Shanxi, I should experience the Young Mistress style, especially with the little bangs. The makeup shop is outside the East Gate of the Ancient County Town. This outfit is quite popular in photos. After looking around, among the embroidered styles, this one is indeed slimming and friendly for plus sizes around 140 pounds. Objectively, the makeup and styling were average, with some waiting beyond the agreed time. The makeup artist was quick, and the accessories were moderately exquisite. But from a travel photography perspective, it met expectations. The price was reasonable at 200 RMB per person. 【Photography】I chose the photographer because I liked the style of the client photos. Communication was very efficient throughout, the pose guidance was clear, and the shooting concept was well thought out. The attitude toward retouching was surprisingly serious; they first edited a few photos to confirm the level of body and skin retouching before proceeding with the final edits. This kind of professionalism in travel photography deserves praise, and the retouching speed was also fast. P1-6 are the photographer’s retouched photos (color tone unchanged, personal editing habits include slight adjustments to the subject); P7-18 are original photos with my own free color grading. There were quite a few beautiful originals, and some of the retouched ones were the more difficult shots for me. 【Location】Because I liked the roof ridge in P2, the shoot location was set at the Manjianghong Film Base in Taiyuan Ancient County Town, the filming site of Zhang Yimou’s "Manjianghong." The courtyard is great for shooting, though the indoor furnishings are somewhat sparse. If you want to shoot a wealthy family, you’d need a house with more exquisite interior decor. But if you like courtyard outdoor scenes, this venue is quite good. 📝Shooting in a Jin Merchant courtyard is also very interesting. I promised not to go for the smoky, decadent style and focused on portraying a good life, but unintentionally, there was still a bit of subtle emo.

The stunning late autumn scenery is everywhere in Shanxi, no need to search deliberately. Must-visit autumn spots in Taiyuan: Jinci Temple Autumn at Jinci Temple is like a colorful Chinese painting. Red and yellow leaves intertwine, especially the two 500-year-old ginkgo trees in front of Wang Qiong Temple, glowing golden. For all friends traveling to Shanxi, don’t miss Jinci Temple in late autumn. Longshan Red Leaves Longshan not only has grottoes, but every late autumn, the whole mountain is covered in red, yellow, and orange leaves. It is the largest and most concentrated red leaf viewing area in the western mountains of Taiyuan. Taiyuan Grotto Temple Compared to the crowded Juwei Mountain, the Grotto Temple is much less crowded. Navigate to the Grotto Temple parking lot, then it’s about a 20-minute hike uphill. Here you’ll find not only mountains covered in colorful foliage but also a quiet ancient temple. It’s definitely worth a visit in late autumn in Taiyuan. Mount Tai Mount Tai in October is like a poem and painting. The maple leaves burn like fire, with dappled light and shadow. Besides the autumn scenery, the Longquan Ancient Temple and the Relic Pagoda on Mount Tai are also worth seeing. Confucian Temple If you come to Taiyuan in late autumn, don’t miss the Confucian Temple. The red walls of the temple, set against a golden ginkgo tree, truly represent the pinnacle of autumn scenery. After visiting the Confucian Temple, you can also stroll around the nearby Chunyang Palace and Chongshan Temple. Last year, the game "Black Myth: Wukong" made Shanxi popular, and this year I finally came during the National Day holiday. There are no direct flights from Dalian to Datong, so my route was Linfen - Pingyao - Datong - Taiyuan. 📍Day 1 (6th) Landed in Linfen the night before on the 5th, stayed near the Drum Tower. The next day, I hired a car to visit Hukou Waterfall + Xiaoxitian + Guangsheng Temple. Highly recommend my driver, a powerful female driver from Linfen. It was Hao’s husband who took us there. The car was spacious and comfortable, no smoke smell, smooth driving, very thoughtful and attentive! Took the high-speed train to Pingyao that evening. 📍Day 2 (7th) Early morning took the high-speed train to Lingshi East, 16 minutes, then taxi to Wang Family Courtyard. Joined a live guided tour, just a quick look around, saw brick carvings, stone carvings, and wood carvings. Shared a ride back to Pingyao and headed straight to Shuanglin Temple and Zhenguo Temple. Be sure to get a guide for both temples: Shuanglin Temple for the polychrome sculptures, Zhenguo Temple for the architecture. Strolled around Pingyao Ancient City in the evening. 📍Day 3 (8th) Took the high-speed train to Datong, stayed at the Orange Hotel outside the ancient city, highly recommended! Newly opened in 2024, rooms are super large! Clean and quiet! Arrived at noon, went to eat at Longjuxiang! In the afternoon visited Datong Museum (booked seven days in advance), and walked around Datong Ancient City at night. Xijin Dao is super delicious! 📍Day 4 (9th) Hired a car to first visit Hanging Temple, smoothly got the climbing ticket seven days in advance, then went nearby to see Yong’an Zen Temple, after that headed straight to Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, and finally visited Jingtusi Temple. Had Shanxi copper hotpot at Yunjinhui in Datong Ancient City for dinner, so delicious! A full pot, very satisfying! Then went to stroll around Dongnanyi. Strongly recommend driver Mr. Niu! Enthusiastic and attentive, great driving skills, spacious and clean car! We took our time to explore at our own pace! 📍Day 5 (10th) Morning at Yungang Grottoes, afternoon at Huayan Temple and Shanhua Temple. Also recommend guide Mr. Leng from Datong! We had a male guide, very knowledgeable, lively and interesting explanations, easy to understand! Had lunch at Liu Laolao Doumian, dinner at Zini 369! I’m still savoring Datong’s food: crispy sweet and sour pork tenderloin coated in sweet and sour sauce, yellow millet cold cake, shaomai, and the flavorful knife-cut noodles from Xijin Dao. Took the high-speed train to Taiyuan at night. 📍Day 6 (11th) Visited the Northern Qi Murals Museum in the morning (walk-in booking), a museum built on an ancient tomb, with free guided tours once in the morning and once in the afternoon on non-holidays. Listened to the guide first, then explored on my own. In the afternoon, went to Shanxi Provincial Museum (booked three days in advance), official guide costs 38 RMB per person, the explanation was excellent! Had dinner at Xinghualang, delicious! 📍Day 7 (12th) Early morning took a taxi to Jin Temple, be sure to hire a guide! Continuing to recommend guide Mr. Tian! Very knowledgeable, well-versed in history and culture! Jin Temple is beautiful, fun to explore, and great for photos! (Guides for Shuanglin Temple and Jin Temple are both selected by Xiaoyaoyou Wenbo) In the afternoon, headed straight to the Botanical Garden, only had time to visit the indoor pavilion, the popular big elevator is super photogenic! It’s just a 40-minute subway ride to Taiyuan Airport, trip ended! Sorry Shanxi, I came late! Shanxi can’t be fully explored in one trip, I will definitely come back!
