The Wang Compound is very impressive in size, being the collective residences of all descendants and extended family of Governor Wang, who aced the Chinese Imperial exams and became a Very Important Person. The misnomer Compound ought to be called a town. It has a large main section of homes where the main family lived, joined to another walled section that contains many, many homes. Unfortunately, everything was confiscated by the government during the Cultural Revolution and all remaining residents left, housed elsewhere. So the result is a lot of empty buildings, the two large sections linked by a bridge at the top of the walls. There’s not much to see in the second section after you cross the bridge, mostly empty buildings. There were some temporary art exhibitions there, and a museum (follow the arrows) at the top of the hill. Because it was steep and we were getting tired, we opted to skip it. To return to the exit (different from the entry), one has to cross the bridge again.
