Five-day tour of Northeast Japan | Don't waste a single minute of your JR PASS① ||| It was a spur-of-the-moment decision to go to Northeast Japan with friends. The first thing to do is to buy the JR PASS Tohoku 5-day ticket (except for foreign tourists, foreign residents in Japan can buy it with just their passport). For each trip on the Shinkansen, you can use this coupon to exchange for a designated seat at the machine or window. Unlimited exchanges (should be). We exchanged for a train in advance but missed it, so we directly exchanged for the next train at the machine without any problem. This step is worth noting: please please keep this JR PASS safe, because once it is lost, there is no way to retrieve it except to buy a new one. (My friend lost it on the second day and had to buy a new one, which was very sad.) Next, let me share our five-day-four-night itinerary: ❄️DAY1: Tokyo → Sendai → Morioka First, I went to the Northeast to check out the statue of Lu Xun, and next to the statue was the Lu Xun Museum, where they had his report card from back then, haha! The ruins of the main compound of Sendai Castle are a wonderful place to feel the history of Sendai. Although the castle itself no longer stands, a bronze statue of Lord Date Masamune stands proudly, evoking a sense of history. The Aoba Shrine 青葉神社

A very old shrine but well maintained. Visited this place during weekdays so it was nice and quiet. It's about a 10 minute walk from Kita Sendai Station. It is located in the Kitayama area of Sendai. The large white stone torii gate was rebuilt in 2014, after the previous one collapsed in the Great East Japan Earthquake. After passing through the torii gate, there is a long staircase. Visit the shrine with gratitude. I received a simple handwritten stamp.

The Sakuragaoka Shrine

Tsutsugaoka Hachimangu Shrine is surrounded by apartment buildings. As you pass through the torii gate and head towards the water fountain, you will see a wooden carving in the middle depicting a nightingale, a bird associated with Tenjin. In addition to haiku monuments, poem monuments, and fude mounds, there is also a shrine within the precincts, and a petting cow associated with the deity Sugawara no Michizane is enshrined in the spacious, well-maintained grounds.

Sendai Mediatheque せんだいメディアテーク

An interesting building with plenty of spaces and interesting art display to discover too. We walked around and had fun and there sat at the first floor cafe for a coffee and dessert. Though we did not see the night lightings etc or do anything adventurous we had fun and enjoyed the afternoon in the building. The display on the building after earthquake were interesting and informative. The other levels where there were art exhibits and photos were great too!

The Nakamoto Seishi Contemporary Art Museum

This museum is the hidden gem of Sendai. The location, right in the middle of residential area, might be a little hard to reach via public transport, but it's well worth your time. Aside from exhibitions, they also have live concerts (classical music, folk music) from time to time. Special mention for the architecture. So artful and magical. I feel like visiting a building designed by Antonio Gaudi himself.

Tsutsujigaoka Tenmangu Shrine 榴岡天満宮

One of many Tenmangu shrines across Japan. This one was relocated here by the 4th lord of the Date Clan, Date Tsunamura, in 1667. People come to pray to the enshrined deity Sugawara Michizane for success in academics and politics. The Chinese-style gate is a city registered cultural asset and a stone monument records a poem by famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho, commemorating his “Narrow Road to the Deep North.”

The Sendai Toshogu Shrine 仙台東照宮

Beautiful little shrine in a quiet grove. Worth a visit if you have a little extra time. Parking available at the site or a leisurely 40 minute walk from Sendai station. A large shrine near Toshogu station (1 stop from Sendai station). You can enjoy quiet atmosphere and good scenery of wooden in heart of town. The stairs are not too high and easy for walking even for eldery. The shrine staffs (miko) are very kind. Please note that Toshogu station is small and has only one platform.

Sendai Anpanman Children's Museum & Mall

There are two parts of this buildings, the Anpanman museum and the Anpanman shops. The museum is quite expensive and more suitable for children because there are several toys and attractions.
