Explore the Seven Rila Lakes: Bulgaria's Natural Gem
The Seven Rila Lakes are a series of glacial lakes that attract visitors with their pristine beauty and tranquil scenery. Located at altitudes between 2,100 and 2,500 meters, they are one of Bulgaria's most magical natural wonders.
A trip to the Seven Rila Lakes usually starts from Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. A roughly 90-minute scenic drive will take you to the foot of the Rila Mountains. From there, you can take a cable car up the mountain, enjoying views of dense forests and rugged peaks below. Each of the Rila Lakes has its own unique charm and characteristics, making the hike a diverse and enriching experience. The lakes are named according to their shapes and features:
Salzata (The Tear): The highest lake, known for its crystal-clear, mirror-like surface.
Okoto (The Eye): An almost perfect oval, it is the deepest lake, reaching a depth of 37.5 meters.
Babreka (The Kidney): Known for its steep shores, it is a favorite among photographers.
Bliznaka (The Twin): The largest lake by area, it looks like two connected bodies of water.
Trilistnika (The Trefoil): Irregular in shape with low shores, offering a unique landscape.
Ribnoto Ezero (The Fish Lake): The shallowest lake, often teeming with fish.
Dolnoto Ezero (The Lower Lake): The lowest in altitude, collecting water from the other lakes to form the Dzherman River.
The hike around the Seven Rila Lakes is of moderate difficulty and can be easily completed by most hikers with a reasonable level of fitness. Clearly marked trails guide you through various terrains, from dense meadows to rocky slopes. The entire loop takes about 3 to 5 hours, depending on your pace and the number of stops you make to admire the scenery.
As you ascend, each lake reveals its beauty in turn, each more stunning than the last. The trail offers numerous viewpoints where you can stop to capture the breathtaking vistas. The lakes are surrounded by the high peaks of the Rila Mountains, creating a truly awe-inspiring sight.
The best time to visit the Seven Rila Lakes is during the summer, from June to September. During this period, the weather is generally mild, and the trails are free of snow. July and August are particularly popular, but if you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting in June or September.
The Seven Rila Lakes offer an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and adventurers alike. Whether you are an avid hiker or simply looking for a peaceful natural retreat, this destination will leave you with lasting memories. So, put on your hiking boots, grab your camera, and get ready to explore one of Bulgaria's most enchanting natural wonders!

The Seven Rila lakes 😍🇧🇬⛰️
The Seven Rila Lakes are the most visited group of lakes in Bulgaria, both by locals and tourists. They are situated in Rila National Park and are perfect for seasoned hikers, but also for nature lovers with less hiking experience. Here is all you need to know when planning a trip to the lakes.
Each lake has a name according to its shape or characteristic. They are (in the order you will visit them): The Lower Lake, The Fish Lake, The Trefoil Lake, Twin Lake, The Kidney Lake, The Eye Lake and The Tear Lake. A mountain ridge above them called the Lake Mount offers the best panoramic view to all the lakes but one. You will need at least three hours to see them all (a round trip will take six hours), so plan to start early. It’s a good idea to spend the night at one of the chalets close to your starting point so you don’t have to rush.

Bulgaria - Seven Rila Lakes
Day 4 of our road trip. We went for a hike at the Seven Rila Lakes. We took the Chair Lift up to the midpoint of the snow-covered mountain where we began our hike to the top. The Chair Lift ride was quite long, about 20 minutes. The scenery during the ride was fantastic. It cost 30 Lev per adult and 15 Lev for kids 12 and under. Well worth it.
The hike started at the end of the Chair Lift ride, up a long slope with stony pathways. We were all mesmerized by the amazing scenery of the snow-covered landscape and mountains above the clouds. On our return path, the sun was setting, covering the landscape with a golden coat.
We took about 5 hours round trip and saw 5 of the seven lakes. The last two were too far away, and the hike up the mountain looked challenging without the right gear and equipment.
