5 Terre 🇮🇹 in December
Hiking between the beautiful Vernazza and Manarola.
Even if it’s December and it rains a lot in this period, in Liguria you are a le to find wonderful day like the one in the photos.
5 Terre is a very famous area in Liguria, northern Italy. It comprises five fish villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.
You can choose to visit them by train but I recommend you to hike between the villages so you can appreciate more the amazing view of this part of Italy.
During the summer it’s very crowded, so it’s better to go during spring and autumn.
Would you go?#5 terre

Italian - Cinque Terre.
Cinque Terre is located on the eastern coast of Liguria and is a rugged coastline in the province of La Spezia, including five villages, from west to east: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Due to the special geographical location and cultural landscape of these villages, Cinque Terre has become one of the main tourist attractions on the coast of La Spezia. In 1997, at the proposal of the province of La Spezia, Cinque Terre and the Port of Venere, Palmaria Island, Tino Island, and Tinetto Island were listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. In 1999, the Cinque Terre National Park was officially established.
The dreamy Italian fishing village is hidden on the cliff by the coast.
🏡Cinque Terre, composed of five fishing villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. It is recommended to arrange a three-day tour.
[One]Riomaggiore: The most well-equipped of the five fishing villages, and the initiator of the Cinque Terre National Park. It has classic fishing village scenery and a castle to visit.
[Two]Manarola: Internet-famous village. Many postcard angles of Cinque Terre come from this fishing village. The cliff is full of colorful houses. It is recommended to come at sunset, otherwise you may be disappointed.
[Three]Corniglia: A village located halfway up the mountain (you need to take a bus to get there). Fewer tourists arrive, but you can enjoy the coastline from a high place.
[Four]Monterosso: The largest fishing village with more hotel and restaurant options. There is a beach stretching for hundreds of meters. After eating, you can take a walk along the coast. Attractions include The Giant Statue.
[Five]Vernazza: A fishing village full of history, a good place to watch the sunset. There are two small pebble beaches, and you can climb up to the Doria Castle to overlook this fishing village.
Cinque Terre, Italy, the most beautiful fishing village in the world.
Cinque Terre, located in the Liguria region of Italy, is a shining pearl on the Mediterranean coast. It is composed of five small fishing villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Cinque Terre is famous for its unique geographical location, colorful houses, delicious seafood, and hiking trails, and has become one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. If you love places where nature and culture blend, then it is definitely worth a visit!
👍🏻【Must-visit attractions】
- Vernazza: Known as one of the most beautiful villages in Cinque Terre, it has a charming harbor and medieval-style buildings.
- Manarola: The "Love Road" (Via dell'Amore) here is a path connecting Manarola and Riomaggiore, which is very suitable for couples to stroll.
- Monterosso: This is the largest of the five villages and the only place with a real beach, suitable for sunbathing and swimming.
🚙【Transportation strategy】
- The most convenient way to reach Cinque Terre is to take a train from Pisa or Florence to La Spezia, and then transfer to a regional train to Cinque Terre. Train tickets can be purchased for a pass, which is convenient for visiting various villages.
- If you choose to drive by yourself, please note that due to the terrain, parking may be difficult and expensive. It is recommended to park the car in La Spezia and then transfer to public transportation.
🏘️【Accommodation recommendation】
- You can enjoy the beauty of Cinque Terre by staying in any village, but considering the flow of tourists, it is recommended to book in advance. Monterosso is popular because it has a beach; Vernazza is popular because of its beauty; if you want a quieter environment, you can consider staying in Corniglia.
- It is recommended to book a homestay or hotel with a sea view balcony, so you can enjoy a glass of local wine while enjoying the beautiful scenery.
❗【Surrounding food】
- Don't miss the seafood here! Freshly caught fish, octopus and mussels are good choices.
- Try local specialties-octopus with olive oil, lemon cocktail and Liguria's traditional pasta Trofie con Pesto di Genova.
- The local area also produces a sweet wine called Sciacchetra, which is made from local grapes. It is sweet but not greasy, and is very suitable as a dessert wine after a meal.
🌺【Nearby attractions recommended】
- After visiting Cinque Terre, you can go to nearby Portofino to experience a more high-end seaside style.
- The Leaning Tower of Pisa is not far away, and it takes about an hour to get there from La Spezia.
Riomaggiore day trip 🇮🇹
#italytrip
Spent a day in Riomaggiore, one of the beautiful villages in Cinque Terre, and it was like stepping into a postcard! The train from La Spezia was just a few euros, and once you arrive, you're greeted by colorful houses stacked on the cliffs overlooking the sea 🌊🏘️. There’s no entrance fee to the village itself, but if you want to hike the trails between the villages, you'll need a Cinque Terre Trekking Card, which costs around €7.50.
We started with a walk down to the harbor, where the boats and crystal-clear waters made for some stunning photos. For lunch, we grabbed some fresh seafood at a little trattoria overlooking the water – the anchovies and pesto pasta were incredible 🍝🐟. Then, we strolled through the narrow, winding streets, checking out the local shops selling everything from ceramics to lemon-themed souvenirs.
The Via dell'Amore trail was unfortunately closed, but we still enjoyed hiking a bit up the hillside for some incredible views of the village and the sea. If you have time, take a dip in the harbor or just relax on the rocks and soak up the sun.
Riomaggiore is a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure, with that authentic Italian charm. Can't recommend it enough for a day trip!

Dreamy Italian Town 🇮🇹
#italytrip
Have you watched the Pixar's film, Luca? If you haven’t seen the film, you’re missing out. In addition to a beautiful story, the views of the fictional town, Portorosso, are absolutely spectacular. Sure, it’s an animated movie, but it’s inspired by a real place, Cinque Terre.
Cinque Terre, the five towns, is a string of five ancient fishing villages composed of five beautiful hillside villages; Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. It perched high on the Italian Riviera just south of Genoa in northwest Italy.
The five villages are connected by hiking trails open all year round. The Cinque Terre Express trains are running every 20 minutes between the five villages. You can also enjoy this scenic coastline by taking the ferry and hop on and off where you like.

Cinque Terre, Italy
Hiking the most beautiful town in Italy's Cinque Terre: Riomaggiore
I have finally arrived at the other side of the Anywhere Door: the Cinque Terre in Italy!
►Millennium-old village
▪︎ Over a thousand years ago, humans transformed the steep slopes of the Ligurian seaside into arable land suitable for farming, and built stone walls to live in, which is what the Cinque Terre is.
▪︎ The residential buildings of the Cinque Terre stand on the cliffs, facing the sea against the mountains, with beautiful scenery. The five original ecological seaside towns are Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, among which Riomaggiore is the easternmost and the largest town!
►Full hiking experience
▪︎ After getting off the train at Monterosso, we saw the blue sea and the lush green vegetation, a real visual feast!
▪︎ The rocks on both sides of the pier are filled with buildings of various heights, and the colorful coatings on the surface add a lovely atmosphere to the pier, which is also the scenery on postcards
▪︎ Walking along the coastline, you can see a variety of cute fishing boats, and in the shops, there are introductions to various practical knots
▪︎ Not far from the pier, the cliff path is a popular spot, connecting Riomaggiore and Manarola towns, known as the Path of Love! The stone chairs carved into kissing silhouettes and the dense love locks are the symbols of the Path of Love, and the entire path can be walked in 20 minutes. There are various messages and graffiti on the gallery, with a huge stone wall and terraces on one side and cliffs on the other. There are many couples who come here!
►Recommended visit: 1 day
►Transportation: After driving to the Cinque Terre, there is a small train on the island connecting the villages

🚂 Transportation
Don‘t make the mistake to travel by car because the roads to the towns are extremely steep and there‘s not much parking available 🚗 Go by train or boat instead (Hop-on-hop-off train tickets are available at the stations). Public transportation in Italy is dog friendly 🐶
🏨 Hotels
Staying in one of the towns of Cinque Terre is very special because all the day tourists will be gone in the evening and early in the morning. There are not many rooms available though. We stayed in Moneglia (Photo 9) which is a very cute town with a beautiful sand beach 🏖️ There‘s also a dog beach in Moneglia 🐶
🏖️ Beaches
Most beaches in this area are stone beaches but the water is very clear and it‘s so much fun to go for a swim from June to September! So don‘t forget your bikini and your floatie 😋
🐶 Dog friendly ?
Italy is one of the dog friendliest countries in Europe and dogs are allowed at many places. During high season some beaches are not dog friendly though but there’s usually an alternatoive not far away. For restaurants we barely had any problems 🤗 Many hotels allow dogs and most of them don’t even charge a dog fee.

If you are keen for boat tours on the riviera, I’d reckon travel during spring/summer else the villages are also doable during low season for a good stroll.
Located on the Italian Riviera, Riomaggiore, Italy is a charming village perched on a terraced hillside high above the Ligurian coast. Known for its colorful stone houses that seem stacked on top of one another, and its harbor filled with traditional fishing boats, Riomaggiore is part of the string of five villages that make up the Cinque Terre, a UNESCO Heritage Site. It's also one of the most sought-after travel destinations in all of Italy. The village was originally founded in the 8th century by Greek refugees anxious to take advantage of the naturally rich soil and plentiful sea life surrounding it. The Riomaggiore that we see today, however, actually dates back to the 13th century. It sits in a valley between two steep hills and was named for the stream, Rivus Major, that flows beneath it.
Once under the rule of the Republic of Genoa, Riomaggiore relied heavily on producing wine and olive oil from the surrounding vineyards and orchards. Today its main industry is tourism, with more than two million visitors coming to the town each year.
Riomaggiore is a wonderful place to enjoy fabulous vistas and slowing down to the pace of Italian village life. Stroll along the main street of the village that leads down to the sea, where a small marina framed by lovely pastel houses is filled with brightly hued fishing boats. It's the perfect spot to sit and breathe in the fresh sea air.
