2024 Porto Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in November)
With its Baroque and Romanesque churches, concert halls and museums, Porto, Portugal's second largest city, is both intriguing and charismatic. Located along the D'ouro river estuary on Portugal northern coast, the city has almost perfect year-round weather: great for taking a Port wine tour, golf at one of the city's picturesque resorts such as Amarante or Miramar; or just strolling around the city admiring such architectural wonders such as: Gustave Eiffel's Dona Maria Bridge, Nicolau Nasoni's Clerigos Tower, Rem Koolhaas ' Casa da Musica, or Siza Vieira's Serralves Museum.

🇵🇹 St. Francis Church and Museum in Porto
The Saint Francis Church is one of the most famous religious landmarks in the historic centre of Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is renowned for blending a variety of architectural styles, most notably Gothic and Baroque.
The museum is located in the adjoining spaces of the former Franciscan convent. It offers a historical perspective on the Franciscan Order and its role in Porto. It features a range of artifacts, from religious sculptures and paintings to more secular items related to the history of the church and convent.
One of the most unique features of the museum is access to the catacombs, where the graves of Franciscan friars and other prominent figures are located. It’s a somewhat eerie but fascinating visit.

🇵🇹 City Walking in Porto
During my stay in Porto, I loved exploring the city on foot. Key landmarks like the Dom Luís I Bridge and Porto Cathedral are easily accessible and offer stunning views of the Douro River. Walking through the narrow streets, I admired the medieval architecture, colorful buildings, and azulejos on many facades. Avenida Vimara Peres was particularly charming, lined with beautiful architecture and local shops that reflect Porto’s rich history and culture.

Things You Must Know When Traveling to Porto
Porto, Portugal's charming and colorful second-largest city, boasts numerous attractions. Here, you'll find medieval streetscapes along with a wealth of delicious food and wine. While it's a relatively laid-back place, learning a few essentials can help ensure your trip is successful, from how to use public transportation to what to wear based on the weather.
Porto has an efficient public transportation network with six metro lines connecting various parts of the town. You can also take the metro to the beach and directly to and from the airport. The network also includes buses, trams, and even funiculars. For convenience, purchase an Andante card (€0.60) and top it up for use on the metro and buses.
Trams have special fares (single/round trip €3.50/€6), and tickets can be bought on board. The Dos Guindais funicular also requires a separate ticket (€3.5 one way), offering a short but super fun ride from the riverside near the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge to Rua Augusto Rosa near the Church of Santa Clara.
Don't forget your swimsuit!
Porto's western communities are adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean, and many wide beaches are easily accessible by metro or bus. The water is cold, but in the hot summer months when temperatures can reach up to 30°C, it provides a delightful relief.
Porto's hills and uneven sidewalks will give your legs a workout. Make sure to bring walking shoes to avoid spraining your ankle.
Bring a raincoat and a scarf to prepare for the variable weather. Porto, located on the chilly Atlantic, has a Mediterranean-like climate with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Even if you visit in July or August, you should bring a raincoat for the occasional shower. In winter, expect a few days of wet weather followed by pleasant, sunny skies. No matter when you visit, dress in layers as the weather can start off cold and then become quite warm. Porto's waterfront also has strong breezes, so be sure to bring a scarf.
If you get the chance, try Francesinha in Porto, a beloved local dish. It's not fancy at all, made with thick bread stuffed with ham, Portuguese sausage, steak, and cheese, then topped with more melted cheese and a slightly spicy sauce made from tomatoes and beer. You might even add a fried egg on top to keep your cholesterol in check. Make sure to eat light before indulging in this delicious, high-calorie meal.
Get ready to be splashed!
Walking along the Foz coastline was one of the highlights of our trip to Porto. We took a bus to get there, and after a short walk, we reached the lighthouse where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic Ocean is right in front of you, with a beautiful coastline dotted with many lighthouses. Get ready to be splashed! The waves here are huge, creating some stunning splashes that almost cover the walls and lighthouses. It's a great way to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the city, offering top-notch views and a beautiful environment. It can be quite impressive on stormy days. If you have a few hours to spare while visiting Porto, don't hesitate to go there.
A Typical Experience in Porto
The renovated Mercado Bolhão market, located in the bustling historic center of Porto, is a must-visit for tourists strolling through the city. The stalls here sell a variety of fish, meat, fruits, coffee, cheese, seeds, chocolate, and crafts. We absolutely loved it; it makes you want to eat and drink everything there as the quality is excellent. We bought a glass of sangria and then wandered around the 'stalls.' Some olives, then cheese, followed by some ham, etc. Ending the morning with lunch here is a very enjoyable experience.
The vibrant atmosphere and community spirit of Mercado do Bolhão attracted all of us. It is a true reflection of local culture and an opportunity to appreciate the authenticity of the city. If you want to experience genuine Portuguese culture, Mercado do Bolhão is the ideal place to go!
One of the Top 10 Most Beautiful Cafés in Portugal: The Enchanting Majestic Café
Portugal. Porto|Majestic Café
Hailed as one of the top 10 must-visit beautiful cafés in Porto, the 'Majestic Café' is truly enchanting. The interior boasts a luxurious, palace-like decor that is both vintage and stunning. This time, I tried the rather uncommon Bombom coffee, which is essentially a Spanish latte made with condensed milk, regular milk, and espresso. It's incredibly sweet and thick (worth trying if you're curious). Although the place is crowded and the tables are quite close to each other (making the dining environment less comfortable), it's still worth a visit if you're traveling abroad.

💖Overview of attractions
✔️Louis I Bridge: The Louis I Bridge is a steel arch bridge across the Douro River, connecting Portugal's second largest city Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Its name commemorates the then King Louis I. Its 172-meter span ranked first in the world at the time and is now one of Porto's landmark buildings.
✔️Aveiro Canal: Aveiro is known as the "Venice of Portugal", so you can't miss the beauty of the canal when you come to Aveiro. The banks of the winding canal are lined with colorful houses and Art Nouveau buildings. On the water, the Morrisiro boats with local characteristics are paddling leisurely. Time seems to slow down in the picturesque scenery.
✔️Tomar Christian Church: The Catholic church building combines Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline and Renaissance architectural styles. It is one of the most important historical and cultural buildings in Portugal. It was designated by UNESCO in 1983. Listed as a World Heritage Site by the World Cultural Organization.
✔️Jeronimos Monastery: The most prominent monument in Lisbon, it took 100 years to build. The monastery is a perfect combination of Gothic and Renaissance styles. It is called the "treasure" of Manueline architecture by later generations. It is the most gorgeous and majestic monastery in Portugal. The nuns of the convent invented the Portuguese egg tart.
✔️Cintra Pena Palace: Located on the top of a mountain with stunning scenery, it was formerly a monastery. It was converted into a colorful fairy tale castle during the Ferdinand II period, incorporating various elements of Romanticism, Renaissance, Manueline and Moorish styles. The essence of home. The park next to the palace is filled with exotic plants and is a treasure trove of great surprises.
☀️Driving in Portugal is like opening an old book full of stories, each page exudes a charming fragrance. The scenery along the way unfolds like a scroll, from the aroma of Porto's wine to the blue sea and sky of Benagil Beach, to the castles and churches hidden on the top of the mountains, every step is intoxicating. This is not only a visual feast, but also a spiritual baptism.

Porto | Porto is probably the most romantic city in Portugal
| Porto is probably the most romantic city in Portugal. Porto, always the 'dream city' that comes to mind, is probably the most romantic European city I've walked through. Make sure to allocate enough time for this stop on your trip to Western Portugal...
⛱️Must-visit attractions:
❶Luís I Bridge🌉: Spanning the old and new towns, be sure to take the tram🚋 and slowly enjoy the scenery passing by the window.
❷Lello Bookstore📖: The world's most beautiful bookstore, with long queues. You can check in at the Hogwarts spiral staircase, but it's a pity I didn't go inside. Instead, I bought some delicious ice cream🍨 at the door.
❸Church of the Holy Spirit: The blue and white porcelain facade is very eye-catching and photogenic
🌄Travel tips:
I personally think that citywalk, wandering without a specific purpose, is the best way. The city is not big, and it's generally enough to visit in 1-2 days.
💗Other tips:
If you're arranging a trip to both Spain and Portugal, local flights are economical. I visited Lisbon and Porto in Portugal, one day each.
The Lighthouse at the Mouth of the Douro River in Porto
Easily accessible from the center of Porto to see the Atlantic Ocean..
It's a very beautiful and picturesque place. The mouth of the Douro River leads to the sea. A historic and significant lighthouse guides ships.
It seems like everyone in Porto should come here. You can easily get here by taking bus 500 or the historic tram number 1.
The bus runs more frequently and is cheaper, while the tram seems very appealing to tourists. Both modes of transport follow the same route along the coast, so beautiful views are guaranteed.
Coming here to watch the sunset or taking a walk along the promenade or in the park is also recommended.

Endless summer, Porto sunset train
Coming to Porto is like walking into an endless summer.
This European sunset city, every frame is like a movie.
Compared to Lisbon, I prefer the less popular here.
Porto is not big, a day tour is completely enough.
These few spots must be checked in❗️
1️⃣Sunset viewing platform
📍Miradouro da vitoria
You can take a panoramic view of the Luis I Bridge and the Douro River.
📍Miradouro da Serra do Pilar
The sunset train panorama is almost all shot here, and the nearby Hill garden can also see the sunset.
2️⃣Unique blue and white porcelain wall
📍Capela das Almas
📍Sao Bento Staion
The train station paved with blue and white porcelain.
📍Chapel of Souls
📍Igreja do Carmo
The blue and white porcelain exterior walls of these two are very exquisite.
3️⃣Casa Museu Fernando de Castro
A small museum recommended by locals, with many art collections.
4️⃣Lello Bookstore
It is said to be the place that inspired JK Rowling to write Harry Potter, and the stairs in the bookstore are very cinematic.
🥩Vaccarum
A steakhouse that I accidentally walked into next to the homestay I stayed in, it's delicious and large in portion, and the price is not expensive.
Trip to Porto, Portugal 🇵🇹
After a short vacation to Lisbon, I am in love and planned this trip to Porto. Aside from all others common tourist spots, I would love to recommend some places and restaurant that I have visited and love 🥰
The “MUST” visit and my favorite tourist spot will be Livraria Lello. It is a bookshop and the interior was stunning. The bookshop is located in the civil parish of Cedofeita, the northern Portuguese municipality of Porto. We bought an entrance ticket that costs €5/pax. The bookshop is known as the most beautiful bookshop in the world. If you’re a big fan of Harry Potter like me, you definitely must visit this place. We spent almost 2hours to walk around and explore! Definitely worth it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Livraria Lello
📍R. das Carmelitas 144, 4050-161 Porto, Portugal
We then visited Ponte Luis i, also known as the Luis Bridge. It is known as the most famous bridge in Portugal. There are two ways to cross the bridge, on foot or metro aside from driving. After crossing the bridge, we walked to the opposite to take some photos. I would recommend you to visit in the evening as you will see the best scenery ever ‼️
Ponte Luis I
📍Ponte Luís I, Porto, Portugal
Last but not least, I just wanna share my most favourite restaurant in Porto, Tapabento S.Bento. We were there on Tuesday but it was closed. (Restaurant close on Monday and Tuesday). We then visited again on Wednesday. The restaurant served tapas and international cuisine. In this restaurant, I had the best seafood tomyam in my life 🥰 It was served with prawns and mussels. It’s all very fresh and we just love it. We also ordered grill pork and mashed potato that was recommended by the waitress. The food were all very delicious and the price is very reasonable. Check it out 🙌

🇵🇹 Porto Cathedral

The Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto) is one of the famous landmarks in the historic centre of Porto, a UNESCO world heritage site. It is located a short walk away from the upper deck of Luís I Bridge and São Bento metro station. This hilltop cathedral was first built in the 12th century. It has since undergone various transformations over the years. To visit the interior of the cathedral you need to get a ticket for €3. It is also possible to climb many flights of steep stairs to the top of the tower to get panoramic views of the city.

Iconic symbol of Porto
The famous bridge in Porto, Portugal is the Dom Luís I Bridge, and it is a beautiful example of 19th-century engineering and design. The bridge spans the Douro River.
The Dom Luís I Bridge is a double-decked metal arch bridge. It has two levels, with the upper level carrying a roadway for cars and pedestrians, and the lower level carrying a metro line. The upper level offers stunning views of the city of Porto, the Douro River, and the surrounding hills. The bridge's metal arches are beautifully designed, with intricate details and elegant curves, and they create a striking contrast against the blue sky and the river below.
At night, the Dom Luís I Bridge is illuminated, creating a stunning display of lights that reflect on the river and add to the bridge's beauty. The bridge is not only a functional structure but also a work of art and a beloved symbol of Porto, attracting visitors from all over the world.

Best way to enjoy the Porto River side!
Besides lots of beautiful churches, Porto is a city full of beautiful scenery. I usually go to the River side to spend the day, where i can enjoy coffee or a cup of sangria there! There are many restaurants around too. After lunch, you can walk through the bridge to get to the Gaia, it's another view to gaze at for some time. It's also a good idea to watch the sunset at Gaia!
A Charming Culinary Gem - A Fabrica da Picaria in Porto
Nestled in the heart of Porto, A Fabrica da Picaria is a culinary gem that left me utterly delighted with its charm and delectable offerings. Stepping into this quaint eatery, I instantly felt a welcoming atmosphere that exuded warmth and comfort.
The rustic yet elegant decor creates a unique ambiance that transports visitors to a bygone era. The exposed brick walls adorned with vintage photographs and antique furnishings add to the restaurant's authentic charm, making it a delightful setting for a memorable dining experience.
The menu at A Fabrica da Picaria boasts a delightful array of traditional Portuguese dishes, each prepared with utmost care and passion. From hearty seafood stews to succulent grilled meats, every dish is a tantalizing blend of flavors that celebrate the region's culinary heritage. I found myself indulging in the freshest seafood and savoring the rich aromas of traditional spices - a true delight for my taste buds.
To complement the exceptional cuisine, the restaurant offers an impressive selection of locally sourced wines. The attentive staff is well-versed in pairing the perfect wine with each dish, enhancing the dining experience to an even greater level.
The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the warm and hospitable service provided by the restaurant's staff. Their genuine passion for their craft and their willingness to share the stories behind each dish and wine made the experience all the more enjoyable.
For a memorable culinary journey through Porto's gastronomic heritage, A Fabrica da Picaria is a must-visit. Its delightful ambiance, delectable cuisine, and genuine hospitality combine to create an unforgettable dining experience that leaves visitors craving for more. Whether you're a local seeking an authentic taste of home or a curious traveler looking to savor the flavors of Porto, A Fabrica da Picaria is a treasure trove waiting to be discovered.#portugal #foodie #travel
Magical Porto
I traveled to Porto expecting to drink lots of port wines, and although there is plenty of port (and cork souvenirs), I found much more, including the birthplace of Hogwarts! In Porto you can find the cafe and bookstore where JK Rowling began drafting the Harry Potter series (although there are such long lines and waitlists that I couldn’t get in), and you will find students wearing the black capes, which inspired the Hogwarts uniforms. Additionally, walking around Porto, you will find beautiful blue tile artwork and amazing food - don’t miss the famous Portuguese egg tarts!

douro river
After walking, we arrived at the Douro River. The breeze was blowing slowly. There were luxury jeeps that took tourists to enjoy the river and enjoy the scenery of the lakes and mountains. If you are too lazy to walk on the ups and downs on your own, this is also a good way to sightsee. , there are distinctive boats sailing in the lake, and many tourists are sitting on the riverside enjoying the beautiful scenery and chatting. The warm orange roof on the shore, I really like the roof features of this color, and the number is beautiful, and the blue sky They echo each other and are really harmonious. Taking a leisurely walk by this romantic lake is really a paradise on earth!
Foodies must visit Bolhao market in Porto
One of my favourite things to do when traveling is trying local foods! Mercado do Bolhao is centrally located in Porto and offers a wide range of snacks from chocolates to pies!
The market has been recently renovated to feature a more modern look and has lifts for disabled visitors. I highly recommend trying the Portuguese egg tarts and custard pastries, washed down with a coffee!

The landmark of Porto
Every visit to Porto will encounter the beautiful Luis I bridge. It is double decked so you can walk on top and at the bottom. Try both for different perspectives of the city!
The bridge is immediately recognisable as a sign of the city and is currently undergoing renovation work. On a sunny day, walk to Jardim do Morro for the sunset views, then cross back to walk alongside the harbor!
Porto stunning views 🌅
This is the most beautiful attraction in Porto. When you walk along the top of the bridge, the view of the city on the river and the trams that rush past is wonderful. It becomes really beautiful during the sunset time. What a gorgeous piece of architecture and infrastructure.

The S. Bento railway station, in the city centre of Porto (is a 20th-century railway terminal) is for sure one of the most beautiful train stations in the entire world 🌍. You can find it walls and ceilings covered with 22 thousand tiles (azulejos) by Jorge Colaço (painter, caricaturist and potter).
The circa 22 thousand tiles depict some of the most relevant episodes of Portuguese history, namely King D. João I and D. Filipa de Lencastre, Egas Moniz and Infante D. Henrique in the conquest of Ceuta.

São Bento station in Porto
The station is located in the city center and has an exquisite tile panel in the lobby. 20 thousand tiles cover every single inch of the walls and it’s easy to lose track of time admiring the gorgeous paintings.
It’s certainly one of the most beautiful stations I’ve been to. If you are visiting Porto, you should definitely include a stop at São Bento station in your itinerary. If you’re lucky, it won’t be too crowded and you’ll be able to take some nice pictures.
